BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) is a condition noted within the first several weeks of life that results in hypertrophy of the pyloric muscle between the stomach and duodenum. The etiology has not been elucidated but genetic and environmental influences are suspected. We hypothesized that agricultural pesticides would be associated with an increased incidence of pyloric stenosis.

A 2-yr entomological study was carried out in Kerala, south India, to identify the mosquito vectors of Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus and to determine their seasonal abundance and infection. The growth of bone mass in the radius of children from age 6 on was studied in Indiana and Wisconsin. Growth curves describing change in bone mass, bone width, body height and weight were fitted separately to the data of males and females in the two states. Statistically significant differences between states were found in almost all growth measurements in both sexes. Refined growth curves with standard deviations were generated separately for the two states. Two case reports of intraabdominal pregnancy and review of 9 others which have been seen at the Indiana University Hospital are presented. An incidence of one intraabdominal pregnancy in 7931 deliveries at Indiana University is compared to 1 in 3372 deliveries from a large series at another institution. Bicycle accidents cause many serious injuries and deaths in the United States, often as a result of head injury in riders not wearing helmets. Helmets reduce the incidence of head injury, and an aggressive safety education campaign has been shown to increase the number of children wearing helmets while riding. METHODS: File review of 418 overdose deaths was performed using Indiana State Department of Health death certificates available through the Allen County Coroner's Office. Of individuals who need treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), 12.6% do not receive it. One reason for this failure to treat is an inadequately prepared health care workforce, including nurses. To establish a state-wide baseline of SUD curricular content, we collected information about topics taught and barriers to teaching important topics using an anonymous survey sent to all 55 nursing programs in Indiana. Topics deemed important were taught more frequently, such as opioid withdrawal (60.6%). Lack of expertise was more commonly reported as a barrier than lack of time (25.3% vs. 7.1%). …
