[Apoptosis in infectious mononucleosis].

Apoptosis of lymphocytes in infectious mononucleosis (IM) was studied. Apoptotic cells (APCs) were defined by morphological characteristics, such as nuclear fragmentation, undergoing apoptosis. Among 10 of 27 IM patients (37.0%) APCs > or = 3 per 500 peripheral white blood cells were observed on admission, but not in normal individuals. Sequential changes of proportions of both APCs and atypical lymphocytes (examined in 2 cases) showed a similar pattern, although APCs began to appear somewhat later and peak level of APCs were lower in comparison with those of atypical lymphocytes. APCs were po…

[Infectious mononucleosis in childhood].

We present 42 cases of infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus in children. Patients were divided into two groups: those less than 4 years old and those 4 to 16 years of age. Splenomegaly was more frequent in young patients. Treatment with amoxicillin was associated with cutaneous rash. Heterophil antibodies were more frequent in patients older than four years of age. In 93% of the cases anticapside antibodies of IgM class were present. Complications were rarely encountered. Pneumonia and haemolytic anemia were present. We believe that anticapside antibodies of the IgM class …

Infectious mononucleosis in adolescents.

Infectious mononucleosis is a clinical manifestation of primary EBV infection in adolescents, characterized by a triad of clinical, laboratory, and serologic features. The classic signs and symptoms are not seen in every patient; rather, the presentations tend to fit into one of three clinical forms (pharyngeal, glandular, or febrile). Recognizing these syndromes provides a useful framework for anticipating the clinical course, complications, and differential diagnosis. Nonclassic presentations of IM include a wide variety of neurologic abnormalities, thrombocytopenic purpura, and splenic rupt…

[Infectious mononucleosis and ampicillin].

One to 10% of the cases have cutaneous reactions caused by ampicillin. When this drug is associated to MI the percentage goes up to 90% of the cases. The physiopathogenic mechanism of the generalized exanthema in this association is unknown. The development of toxicity is postulated because these patients have no previous history of allergy to penicillin either before of after the cutaneous reaction. By a still obscure mechanism, MI predisposes or alters the patient sensibility to the drug and the cutaneous reaction appears. This picture cannot be attributed to MI because the exanthema that pr

Encephalitis in infectious mononucleosis.

Three cases of infectious mononucleosis encephalitis are presented in which the aetiological diagnosis was established by specific Epstein-Barr virus serology. Paul-Bunnell-Davidsohn tests were negative in all cases, and characteristic nonneurological features of infectious mononucleosis were present in only one. The 3 cases had blood serological tests diagnostic of a recent infection with Epstein-Barr virus. The Epstein-Barr virus is one of the more common causes of sporadic encephalitis particularly in young patients and the diagnosis may be considered even in the absence of systemic feature…
