Comparison of bandwidths in the inferior colliculus and the auditory nerve. II: Measurement using a temporally manipulated stimulus.

The anorexia-cachexia syndrome is a debilitating clinical condition characterizing the course of chronic diseases, which heavily impacts on patients' morbidity and quality of life, ultimately accelerating death. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and reflects the complexity and redundancy of the mechanisms controlling energy homeostasis under physiological conditions. Accumulating evidence indicates that, during disease, disturbances of the hypothalamic pathways controlling energy homeostasis occur, leading to profound metabolic changes in peripheral tissues. In particular, the hypothalamic me

Spike-timing codes enhance the representation of multiple simultaneous sound-localization cues in the inferior colliculus.

To preserve multiple streams of independent information that converge onto a neuron, the information must be re-represented more efficiently in the neural response. Here we analyze the increase in the representational capacity of spike timing over rate codes using sound localization cues as an example. The inferior colliculus receives convergent input from multiple auditory brainstem nuclei, including sound localization information such as interaural level differences (ILDs), interaural timing differences (ITDs), and spectral cues. Virtual space techniques were used to create stimulus sets var

Prevalence of stereotypical responses to mistuned complex tones in the inferior colliculus.

The human auditory system has an exceptional ability to separate competing sounds, but the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability are not understood. Responses of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons to "mistuned" complex tones were measured to investigate possible neural mechanisms for spectral segregation. A mistuned tone is a harmonic complex tone in which the frequency of one component has been changed; that component may be heard as a separate sound source, suggesting that the mistuned tone engages the same mechanisms that contribute to the segregation of natural sounds. In this study,

Erratum to "Noise-induced changes of neuronal spontaneous activity in mice inferior colliculus brain slices".

The inferior colliculus (IC) in vivo is reportedly subject to a noise-induced decrease of GABA-related inhibitory synaptic transmission accompanied by an amplitude increase of auditory evoked responses, a widening of tuning curves and a higher neuronal discharge rate at suprathreshold levels. However, other in vivo experiments which demonstrated constant neuronal auditory thresholds or unchanged spontaneous activity in the IC after noise exposure did not confirm those findings. Perhaps this can be the result of complex noise-induced interactions between different central auditory structures. I

Response properties of inferior colliculus neurons in middle-aged C57BL/6J mice with presbycusis.

Extracellular recordings were obtained from inferior colliculus (IC) neurons in young (2-month) and middle-aged (7-month; 12- to 13-month) C57BL/6J mice in response to contralateral tone and noise stimuli. An age-related progressive loss of spiral ganglion cells, most pronounced near the cochlear base, was observed in the mice, accompanied by severe high frequency hearing loss manifested as elevation of neuronal thresholds, especially in the ventromedial half of the IC. There was a small age-related increase (2% to 11%) in 'sluggish' neurons (auditory, but poorly driven by sound); however, mos

Connectional basis for frequency representation in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus.

To study the role of the lateral lemniscus as a link in the ascending auditory pathway, injections of neuronal tracers were placed in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) and in the inferior colliculus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus. To correlate the anatomical results with tonotopic organization, the characteristic frequency of cells at each injection site was determined electrophysiologically. Pathways from AVCN diverge to 3 major targets in the lateral lemniscus, the intermediate nucleus and 2 divisions of the ventral nucleus (VNLL). Projections from these 3 nuclei then converge at the in

Kappa-opioid receptor blockade in the inferior colliculus of prey threatened by pit vipers decreases anxiety and panic-like behaviour.

The dorsal midbrain comprises dorsal columns of the periaqueductal grey matter and corpora quadrigemina. These structures are rich in beta-endorphinergic and leu-enkephalinergic neurons and receive GABAergic inputs from substantia nigra pars reticulata. Although the inferior colliculus (IC) is mainly involved in the acoustic pathways, the electrical and chemical stimulation of central and pericentral nuclei of the IC elicits a vigorous defensive behaviour. The defensive immobility and escape elicited by IC activation is commonly related to panic-like emotional states. To investigate the role o

Nitric oxide signalling underlies salicylate-induced increases in neuronal firing in the inferior colliculus: A central mechanism of tinnitus?

The anti-inflammatory drug salicylate induces tinnitus in animals and man. Salicylate reduces cochlear output but causes hyperactivity in higher auditory centres, including the inferior colliculus (the auditory midbrain). Using multi-electrode recording in anaesthetised guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), we addressed the hypothesis that salicylate-induced hyperactivity in the inferior colliculus involves nitric oxide signalling secondary to increased ascending excitatory input. Systemic salicylate (200 mg/kg i.p., 0 h) markedly increased spontaneous and sound-driven neuronal firing in the inferior

Changes in the Gene Expression Profiles of the Inferior Colliculus Following Unilateral Cochlear Ablation in Adult Rats.

This study aimed to explore gene expression changes in the inferior colliculus (IC) after single-sided deafness (SSD). Forty 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Twenty rats underwent right-side cochlear ablation, and IC tissues were harvested after 2 weeks (SSD 2-week group). Twenty rats underwent a sham operation and were sacrificed after 2 weeks (control group). Both sides of the IC were analyzed using a gene expression array. Pathway analyses were performed on genes that were differentially expressed compared with their levels in the control group. The expression levels of gene

18F-FDG PET Imaging of the Inferior Colliculus in Asymmetric Hearing Loss.

Our purpose was to use PET to evaluate the glucose metabolism of the inferior colliculus (IC) and primary auditory cortex (PAC) in patients with asymmetric hearing loss (AHL). Methods: Normalized regional 18F-FDG uptake of the IC and PAC (reference: cerebellum) was assessed in 13 subjects with AHL using a fully digital clinical PET/CT system. Results: Regional metabolism of both the IC and the PAC was significantly reduced contralateral to the most hearing-impaired ear compared with the ipsilateral side. Duration of deafness correlated positively with metabolism of the contralateral PAC but no

Prolonged low-level noise-induced plasticity in the peripheral and central auditory system of rats.

Prolonged low-level noise exposure alters loudness perception in humans, presumably by decreasing the gain of the central auditory system. Here we test the central gain hypothesis by measuring the acute and chronic physiologic changes at the level of the cochlea and inferior colliculus (IC) after a 75-dB SPL, 10-20-kHz noise exposure for 5weeks. The compound action potential (CAP) and summating potential (SP) were used to assess the functional status of the cochlea and 16 channel electrodes were used to measure the local field potentials (LFP) and multi-unit spike discharge rates (SDR) from th

Monaural tinnitus from a contralateral inferior colliculus hemorrhage.

A 48-year-old man presented with sudden right ear tinnitus and showed no other otoneurologic signs or symptoms. Auditory brainstem response revealed prolonged III-V interpeak latencies from stimulating either ear. MRI revealed a small, circumscribed lesion of the left inferior colliculus, probably from an acute hemorrhage leading to a small cavernous malformation. Circumscribed lesions of the inferior colliculus are rare with no prior reports of contralateral tinnitus.

Inputs to a physiologically characterized region of the inferior colliculus of the young adult CBA mouse.

Presbycusis is a sensory perceptual disorder involving loss of high-pitch hearing and reduced ability to process biologically relevant acoustic signals in noisy environments. The present investigation is part of an ongoing series of studies aimed at discerning the neural bases of presbycusis. The purpose of the present experiment was to delineate the inputs to a functionally characterized region of the dorsomedial inferior colliculus (IC, auditory midbrain) in young, adult CBA mice. Focal, iontophoretic injections of horseradish peroxidase were made in the 18-24 kHz region of dorsomedial IC of

The effects of click level, click rate, and level of background masking noise on the inferior colliculus potential (ICP) in the normal and carboplatin-treated chinchilla.

Carboplatin produces a selective loss of inner hair cells in chinchilla, substantially reducing the amplitude of the compound action potential. A key question that arises from these experiments is: What effect does a reduction in IHC-eighth-nerve fiber input have on the central auditory nervous system? This investigation evaluated the inferior colliculus potential (ICP) in chinchillas treated with carboplatin. The left ear was surgically destroyed and a recording electrode was placed in the left inferior colliculus. Following thirteen days of recovery time, the ICP was recorded in the awake an

Neonatal cochlear hearing loss results in developmental abnormalities of the central auditory pathways.

We have used animal models of long term neonatal cochlear hearing loss to study developmental plasticity of the central auditory pathways. Newborn chinchilla pups and feline kittens were treated with the ototoxic drug amikacin, so as to induce basal lesions in the cochlea. At maturity these animals were used in single unit electrophysiological mapping studies, in which the cochleotopic organization of primary auditory cortex (of the cat) and the inferior colliculus of the midbrain (in the chinchilla) were mapped. We have observed, both in the midbrain and auditory cortex, massive reorganizatio

Auditory system degeneration in Alzheimer's disease.

We observed a highly topographically specific and consistent pattern of degeneration in the auditory system of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Senile plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) were distributed throughout the ventral nucleus of the medial geniculate body (MGB) and the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) in nine of nine AD patients. Adjacent nuclei within the MGB and IC were consistently spared. NFT and SP were also present in the primary auditory and the auditory association cortices. In all control tissues, there were neither SP nor NFT in any of the above s

Aging and presbycusis: effects on 2-deoxy-D-glucose uptake in the mouse auditory brain stem in quiet.

Autoradiography was used to assess the incorporation of [2-14C]deoxy-D-glucose by the auditory brain stem of young and aging mice of the C57BL/6 strain (which demonstrates progressive chronic sensorineural hearing loss) and the CBA strain (which maintains good hearing until late in life). Animals were injected with labeled 2-deoxyglucose and placed in quiet for 45 min; brain stem sections were prepared for autoradiography. The amounts of 2-deoxyglucose incorporated into the anterior ventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN), inferior colliculus (IC), and trigeminal nerve (TN) were densitometrically anal

Computed tomography of the brain stem with intrathecal metrizamide. Part I: the normal brain stem.

In summary, the anatomic details of the brain stem are exquisitely demonstrated with metrizamide CT. The obex is the zone of transition from the closed medulla, which has a conical pear-shaped appearance to the quadriconcave open medulla. The pyramids and inferior olivary nuclei characterize the anterior surface of the open medulla, whereas the median sulcus and the cranial nerve nuclei constitute the floor of the fourth ventricle at the same level. The mushroomlike appearance of the pontomedullary junction is easily reproducible with the restiform bodies forming the posteriorly diverging bipe
