Distinct motivations to seek out information in healthy individuals and problem gamblers.

As massive amounts of information are becoming available to people, understanding the mechanisms underlying information-seeking is more pertinent today than ever. In this study, we investigate the underlying motivations to seek out information in healthy and addicted individuals. We developed a novel decision-making task and a novel computational model which allows dissociating the relative contribution of two motivating factors to seek out information: a desire for novelty and a general desire for knowledge. To investigate whether/how the motivations to seek out information vary between healt

Feeding-induced changes in allatostatin-A and short neuropeptide F in the antennal lobes affect odor-mediated host seeking in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti is a model species in which the endogenous regulation of odor-mediated host seeking behavior has received some attention. Sugar feeding and host seeking in female A. aegypti are transiently inhibited following a blood meal. This inhibition is partially mediated by short neuropeptide F (sNPF). The paired antennal lobes (ALs), as the first processing centers for olfactory information, has been shown to play a significant role in the neuropeptidergic regulation of odor-mediated behaviors in insects. The expression of sNPF, along with other peptides in the ALs of A. aegypti, indicate

Social media as a source of information for patients with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic, disabling condition without a definitive cure, and current management strategies prioritize symptom relief and slowing disease progression rather than addressing the underlying cause. Therefore, KOA patients turn to social media (SM) in the hope of finding a solution or a treatment to relieve their pain. The main goal of this study was to explore the prevalence of information sought by KOA patients on SM and to determine factors associated with its use. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adult patients followed in our rheumatology

Characteristics of health information gatherers, disseminators, and blockers within families at risk of hereditary cancer: implications for family health communication interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Given the importance of the dissemination of accurate family history to assess disease risk, we characterized the gatherers, disseminators, and blockers of health information within families at high genetic risk of cancer. METHODS: A total of 5466 personal network members of 183 female participants of the Breast Imaging Study from 124 families with known mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes (associated with high risk of breast, ovarian, and other types of cancer) were identified by using the Colored Eco-Genetic Relationship Map (CEGRM). Hierarchical nonlinear models were fitted to chara

Examining fear appeals and information seeking in tuberculosis health education campaigns: an experimental test of the extended parallel processing model with perceived barriers as a moderator.

Tuberculosis (TB) health education campaigns often struggle to motivate at-risk populations by employing one-size-fits-all fear appeals without considering how structural barriers shape audiences' ability to respond. Drawing on the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM), this study tested how varying levels of threat and efficacy in TB messages influence information-seeking intentions, with perceived barriers as a moderator. In a 2 (threat: low versus high) × 2 (efficacy: low versus high) between-subject experiment with 225 Chinese participants, results revealed that high-threat messages in

The Impact of Decision-Makers' Motivations for Seeking Advice on Advisors' Advice-Giving.

In everyday life, people frequently seek advice from others. The purposes of seeking advice can be twofold: first, to improve the accuracy of decisions, which is driven by accuracy motivation; and second, to establish good relationships with the advisors, which is driven by relationship motivation. Advisors, when giving advice to others, also consider the potential motivations behind the decision makers' advice-seeking. Two studies explore how advisors give advice based on the perceived advice-seeking motivations of decision makers. The results indicate that: (1) In terms of willingness to giv

The Impact of the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative on Search Patterns of Home Dialysis Options.

The 2019 Advancing American Kidney Health (AAKH) initiative aims to increase utilization of home dialysis for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), but its impact on public awareness is unknown. We analyzed Google Trends data from 2013-2021 to compare relative search volumes for "home dialysis", "peritoneal dialysis", and "home hemodialysis" in the United States (US) versus globally before versus after the July 2019 AAKH announcement. An interrupted time-series analysis found steady pre-AAKH increases in search interest across terms and locations. An immediate increase after AAKH occurred for all s

Early detection of perceived risk among users of a UK travel health website compared with internet search activity and media coverage during the 2015-2016 Zika virus outbreak: an observational study.

OBJECTIVES: The Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak in the Americas in 2015-2016 posed a novel global threat due to the association with congenital malformations and its rapid spread. Timely information about the spread of the disease was paramount to public health bodies issuing travel advisories. This paper looks at the online interaction with a national travel health website during the outbreak and compares this to trends in internet searches and news media output. METHODS: Time trends were created for weekly views of ZIKV-related pages on a UK travel health website, relative search volumes for 'Zi

"I don't know" my cancer risk: exploring deficits in cancer knowledge and information-seeking skills to explain an often-overlooked participant response.

BACKGROUND: Perceived risk is a central theoretical construct in health behavior research. Participants' "don't know" responses to perceived-risk items (DKPR) are usually excluded from analyses. Yet those who provide such responses may have unique cancer information needs. OBJECTIVE: The hypotheses that DKPR responding may be due to cancer knowledge deficits or behavioral, skill, and attitudinal antecedents to knowledge deficits (information seeking, numeracy, and self-efficacy, respectively) were explored. METHODS: Data from the 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS; N = 178

Coping, Stigma, and Barriers to Treatment: A Latent Profile Analysis of Sociocultural Influences on Help Seeking for Intimate Partner Violence Within Hispanic Women.

This study assessed how barriers to treatment, stigmatization, and coping strategies may be associated with help-seeking for intimate partner violence (IPV) and whether these characteristics could yield profiles to predict differences in informal and formal help-seeking. Hispanic females (N = 236) completed an online questionnaire assessing IPV, barriers to treatment, stigmatization, coping strategies, and help-seeking behaviors. A Latent Profile Analysis generated four profiles based on background characteristics (e.g., stigmatization) to predict informal and formal help-seeking. The results

Sexual health information seeking online: a mixed-methods study among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people.

The current study used a mixed-methods approach to investigate the positive and negative aspects of Internet use for sexual health information among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) young people. A diverse community sample of 32 LGBT young people (aged 16-24 years) completed qualitative interviews focusing on how, where, and when LGBT young people use the Internet for sexual health information. Results indicate that although many participants seek facts and statistics about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV online, few conduct searches about broader aspects of sexual
