BACKGROUND: Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is one of the most popular and effective methods for managing postoperative pain. AIM: To study the risks and benefits of intracerebroventricular (ICV) opiate pumps for the management of benign head and face pain.
METHODS … complications were nausea and drowsiness, both of which resolved with pump adjustments. On average, infusion pumps were replaced every 4-5 years.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that ICV delivery of opiates may potentially be a viable treatment option for patients with intractable pain from trigeminal neuralgia or cluster headache.

BACKGROUND: The infusion of air from IV tubing can adversely affect the vascular system and potentially result in a venous air embolism. Infusion pumps are designed to alarm when air in the IV line (AIL) reaches a set threshold and can result in disruptions in drug delivery and decreased nursing productivity. Depending on the method employed, removal of AIL can also pose a risk to healthcare workers and patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) has seen several developments since it was first used. Since the synthesis of the first intravenous anesthetics, with the introduction of barbiturates (1921) and thiopental (1934), TIVA has evolved until the development of TIVA with target-controlled infusion pumps (TCI). The first pharmacokinetic model for the use of TCI was described by Schwilden in 1981. A computer-controlled control loop for the automatic diagnosis of shock and infusion therapy is reported. External information (off-line) and vital parameters measured with serial devices (on-line) are used by the computer for the automatic control of infusion pumps. By this method the critical shock phase could be prevented in five seriously burned patients. The construction of the system also permits its use in other shock conditions.
