Currently, due to the increase in the distribution and accumulation of microplastics and nanoplastics (MP and NP) in the environment, their negative impact on human health has become a global problem. The purpose of this research was to analyze the results of the studies on the effect of MPs and NPs on the body and evaluate their impact as pathogenetic factors of immune status disorders in vitro and in vivo. Material and methods. The search for literary sources was carried out in the PubMed Internet resource, and the Scopus and Web of Science databases were also used. The Springer and Elsevier

A meta-analysis of the association between IL-33 and these diseases is lacking, and we aimed to perform a meta-analysis of the association between IL-33 and systemic sclerosis (SSc). We searched relevant papers through PubMed (via Medline), Embase (via Ovid), and the Cochrane Library through May 18th, 2022. Odds ratios (ORs) and weighted mean differences (WMDs) were estimated using a random effect model. A total of 8 papers were included in our meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that SSc patients had significantly higher serum IL-33 levels than healthy controls (HCs) (SMD = 0.64; 95% CI

Homotaurine is a potential therapeutic compound for treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its efficacy is still under investigation. Emerging data have shown that other than neuroprotective, homotaurine is endowed with anti-inflammatory activities, though with still unclear underlying mechanisms. Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of AD and we previously suggested that homotaurine supplementation in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) plays beneficial effects associated to a decrease in the circulating levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-18. Microbiome dysbiosis and cytokine alternations are key features of atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PsO), two of the most prevalent and burdensome pruritic skin conditions worldwide. Interleukin (IL)-33 and IL-31 have been recognized to be major players who act synergistically in the pathogenesis and maintenance of different chronic inflammatory conditions and pruritic skin disorders, including AD and PsO, and their potential role as therapeutic targets is being thoroughly investigated. The bidirectional interplay between dysbiosis and immunological changes has been extensively studied, b

Much evidence suggests autoimmunity in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease. In fact, in periodontitis, there is antibody production against collagen, DNA, and IgG, as well as increased IgA expression, T cell dysfunction, high expression of class II MHC molecules on the surface of gingival epithelial cells in inflamed tissues, activation of NK cells, and the generation of antibodies against the azurophil granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. In general, direct activation of autoreactive immune cells and production of TNF can activate neutrophils to release pro-inflammatory enzymes w

Type 2 immunity is represented by T helper 2 (Th2) lymphocytes and the cytokines produced downstream (Interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, IL-31). They are increasingly recognized as pivotal mediators in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (Pso). In these disorders, they initiate and amplify immunological signaling cascades, promote cutaneous inflammation, and contribute to the induction of pruritus. In this context, IL-33 and IL-31 would be believed to be intrinsically linked and related to the acuity of the disease. The presence of

Recent data indicate that distinct skin areas show different microbial/chemical milieu. Keratinocytes (KC) respond to these stimuli by producing cytokine mediators. Therefore, we aimed to determine KC-derived cytokine expression in distinct healthy skin regions (gland-poor [GP], sebaceous gland-rich [SGR] and apocrine gland-rich [AGR]), and their changes in skin diseases of the given regions (atopic dermatitis [AD], papulopustular rosacea [PPR] and psoriasis). Cytokines were analysed at the mRNA and protein levels, and literature analysis was performed for functional categorization. The three

Prostate cancer (PCa) is still as a major cause of morbidity and mortality in men at the global level, highlighting the necessity for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies beyond current PSA screening limitations. This mini-review focuses on the complex and often opposing roles of two key cytokines, IL-33 and IL-38, within the tumour microenvironment and their implications for host immunosurveillance in PCa. Intra-tumoral IL-33 expression is significantly reduced in PCa tissues and correlates with aggressive disease features such as higher Gleason scores and lymphatic metastasis, sugg

'Alarmins' are a group of proteins or molecules that are released from cells during cellular demise to alert the host immune system. Two of them, Interleukin-33 (IL-33) and high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), share many similarities of cellular localization, functions and involvement in various inflammatory pathologies including hepatitis. The expressions of IL-33 and HMGB1, and their receptors ST2 and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), are substantially up-regulated during acute and chronic hepatitis. Recent data evidence a possible protective role of IL-33/ST2 axis during li…

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic disease found in Africa and throughout the world. It is responsible for a high rate of hemolysis, systemic inflammation, and modulation of the immune system with the involvement of immunological molecules, such as cytokines. IL-1β is a major inflammatory cytokine. IL-18 and IL-33, members of IL-1 family, also exhibit characteristics of inflammation-related cytokines. Thus, in order to contribute to the evaluation of the severity and prognosis of SCD in Africa, this study aimed to estimate the cytokine response, in particular th

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite numerous attempts to identify effective therapeutics. While some sepsis deaths are attributable to tissue damage caused by inflammation, most mortality is the result of prolonged immunosuppression. Ex vivo, immunosuppression during sepsis is evidenced by a sharp decrease in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by T cells and other leukocytes and increased lymphocyte apoptosis. This allows suppressive cytokines to exert a greater inhibitory effect on lymphocytes upon antigen exposure. While some pre-clinical and clinic

Psoriasis (PS) is a skin disease with autoimmune features mediated by immune cells, which typically presents inflammatory erythematous plaques, and is associated with many comorbidities. PS exhibits excessive keratinocyte proliferation, and a high number of immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, Th1 and Th17 lymphocytes, and mast cells (MCs). MCs are of hematopoietic origin, derived from bone marrow cells, which migrate, mature, and reside in vascularized tissues. They can be activated by antigen-provoking overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines, and release a number of mediator

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) belongs to the interleukin-1 (IL-1) family of cytokines. Under physiological conditions, IL-33 is abundant in the nucleus of epithelial cells from barrier tissues, epithelial cells of blood vessels, and fibroblast-like cells. Upon pathological stimulation, such as cell damage or tissue injury, IL-33 is released from these cells and binds to the ST2 receptor, a member of the toll-like receptor (TLR)/IL-1 receptor superfamily. The IL-33/ST2 axis is involved in regulating multiple inflammatory diseases, tissue damage, fibrosis, and the development of cancers. Recent studies…

IL-33 is a relatively new member of the IL-1 cytokine family, which plays a unique role in autoimmune diseases, particularly some oral diseases dominated by immune factors. The IL-33/ST2 axis is the main pathway by which IL-33 signals affect downstream cells to produce an inflammatory response or tissue repair. As a newly discovered pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-33 can participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune oral diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome and Behcet's disease. Moreover, the IL-33/ST2 axis also recruits and activates mast cells in periodontitis, producing inflammatory chemokines

The release of cytokines from epithelial and stromal cells is critical for the initiation and maintenance of tissue immunity. Three such cytokines, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, IL-33, and IL-25, are important regulators of type 2 immune responses triggered by parasitic worms and allergens. In particular, these cytokines activate group 2 innate lymphoid cells, TH2 cells, and myeloid cells, which drive hallmarks of type 2 immunity. However, emerging data indicate that these tissue-associated cytokines are not only involved in canonical type 2 responses but are also important in the context of v

Cytokines are physiological seminal components and their abnormal levels, reported in different pathological conditions, negatively influence the sperm function. We analysed the relationship between interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-33 levels and lipid peroxidation (LPO), measured both in semen and sperm lysate, in 44 human semen samples. The semen analysis was performed following the WHO guidelines. Seminal IL-6 and IL-33 concentrations were assessed by ELISA and LPO was evaluated measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) both in seminal plasma and viable spermatozoa. Two small groups of patients with varicoce

Enhanced IL-31 expression in skin biopsies is present in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). IL-33 expression is induced in keratinocytes and in skin of ACD patients. This overexpression is present in both allergic and irritant conditions. The aim of this work was to test the systemic involvement of IL-31 and IL-33 in ACD. IL-31 levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls. IL-33 serum levels, on the contrary, were similar in patients and controls. This work shows a possible systemic involvement of IL-31 and the absence of a systemic involvement of IL-33 in ACD. IL-31 levels do
