Prenatal sonographic findings in a fetus with congenital isolated ileal atresia.

Most cases of isolated nonduodenal bowel atresia are thought to be due to ischemic events from hypotension, vascular accident, volvulus, intussusception and cocaine. We present a case of isolated ileal atresia suggested using results of prenatal sonography which showed multiple markedly dilated fluid-filled intestinal loops with changeable shapes and positions secondary to active peristalsis. Postnatal oral contrast radiography demonstrated obstruction located at the ileal level. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed isolated ileal atresia. Primary end-to-end anastomosis was done. The infant endure

Importance of Prenatal Diagnosis of Ileal Atresia in Gestational Diabetes Cases.

BACKGROUND Maldevelopment of the fetal bowel can result in the rare condition of intestinal atresia, which results in congenital bowel obstruction. This report describes a case of prenatal diagnosis of fetal ileal atresia at 22 weeks' gestation. CASE REPORT Here, we present a 24-year old woman who was 22 weeks into her first pregnancy when she underwent routine fetal ultrasound. She was diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus. Her body mass index was normal and she had normal weight gain. The ultrasonographic examination performed revealed a hyperechoic bowel and a small dilatation of the

A rare type of ileal atresia due to intrauterine intussusception.

Intrauterine intussusception is an extremely rare cause of intestinal atresia. We report on a full-term neonate with clinical manifestations of intestinal obstruction two days after birth. The prenatal sonography at the late stage of pregnancy did not show any abnormality. The barium enema suggested distal intestinal obstruction. At surgery, a visible ileo-ileal intussusception resulting in ileal atresia was found. According to our knowledge, this presentation of ileal atresia did not fit into the present classification and have not yet been reported on. We present this rare type of ileal atre

Alimentary Tract Atresias associated with Anorectal Malformations: 10 Years' Experience.

Anorectal malformation (ARM) is one of the most common congenital anomaly that requires emergency surgery in the neonatal period. ARMs are frequently associated with other life threatening congenital anomalies. Commonly associated anomalies are genito-urinary, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, skeletal and spinal. Alimentary tract anomalies are frequently masked by the intestinal obstruction produced by the anorectal atresia. This retrospective study was carried out to find out the incidence of associated alimentary tract atresias with ARM. In our series, out of 785 cases of high ARM, 14 case

Prenatal detection of intestinal obstructions, aneuploidy syndromes, and cystic fibrosis by microvillar enzyme assays (disaccharidases, alkaline phosphatase, and glutamyltransferase) in amniotic fluid.

Microvillar enzymes (disaccharidases, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase) were assayed in amniotic fluid from pregnancies with normal and abnormal fetuses to determine their specificity and reliability for the prenatal detection of intestinal obstructions and cystic fibrosis. All fetuses with imperforate anus, duodenal atresia, jejuno-ileal atresia, multiple intestinal atresia, or other forms of intestinal obstructions, with or without associated ventral wall defect or aneuploidy syndrome, showed diminished microvillar enzyme activities below the normal range of control amniot

A Rare Case of Apple Peel Ileal Atresia With Coexisting Colonic Atresia: Surgical Management and Outcomes.

Ileal atresia is one of the most frequent causes of congenital intestinal obstruction. Type IIIb, also known as apple peel atresia, is the least common subtype. Colonic atresia is a rare anomaly that can also cause neonatal intestinal obstruction. Both can coexist with other atypical malformations, further complicating diagnosis. The surgical management of these two gastrointestinal malformations differs between centers, and no standardized procedural guidelines currently exist. We present a case of a neonate born with apple peel ileal atresia coexisting with transverse colonic atresia, both s

Association of Duodenal Atresia, Malrotation, and Atrial Septal Defect in a Down-Syndrome Patient.

Duodenal atresia is the frequent cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. The association between duodenal atresia, intestinal malrotation, cardiac anomalies and Down syndrome is infrequently reported. We present a prenatally suspected case of duodenal atresia which was associated with malrotation and atrial septal defect in a patient of Down syndrome. Duodenotomy and resection of web was performed in addition to Ladd's procedure. Postoperative course remained uneventful.

[Surgical treatment and problem of massive small intestinal resection in children--assessment of background diseases and actual management].

From 1971 to 1986, massive small intestinal resection was done in twenty-five cases; intestinal atresia 12, intestinal volvulus 9, necrotizing enterocolitis 2, intussusception 1 and gastroschisis 1. Thirteen cases (52%) of them have survived. Of 12 cases with intestinal atresia undergoing small intestinal resection, 7 cases had atresias of multiple type, on the other hand, in intestinal volvulus, 4 of 9 cases without malrotation have had massive small intestinal resection, compared with 5 of 30 cases with malrotation. Many clinical problems have occurred after massive small intestinal resectio

Presentation and outcome of treatment of jejunoileal atresia in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal atresia is a common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. Previous reports from Nigeria have indicated a high mortality rate. This is a report of current outcome review from one tertiary center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of infants managed for jejunoileal atresia in 10 years (2005-2014). The information retrieved from patients' records was analyzed using SPSS 17. RESULTS: There were 38 patients (19 boys and 19 girls) aged 1-28 days (median 4 days). Twenty-four patients (63.2%) presented after 48 h of life. Twenty-five (65.8%) had jejunal atresi

Complex gastroschisis with apple peel jejunoileal atresia, primary closure, and Santulli procedure as a surgical alternative. Case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is a closure defect of the abdominal wall classified as complex when it presents with necrosis, volvulus, or atresia of the gastrointestinal tract. Jejunoileal atresia is caused by abnormal closure, discontinuity, or narrowing of the intestine. Apple Peel or type IIIb is the rarest presentation, with an incidence of 1.3 per 10,000 live births. In addition to presenting a high mortality rate. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a preterm newborn patient of 30 weeks with a diagnosis of gastroschisis and jejunoileal atresia type IIIB. The congenital wall defect was closed

"Keyboard sign" and "coffee bean sign" in the prenatal diagnosis of ileal atresia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Ileal atresia is a congenital abnormality where there is significant stenosis or complete absence of a portion of the ileum. The overall diagnostic accuracy of prenatal ultrasound in detecting jejunal and ileal atresia is low. We report a case of ileal atresia diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound examination with the "keyboard sign" and "coffee bean sign". CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of ileal atresia diagnosed in utero at 31 weeks' of gestation. Prenatal ultrasound examination revealed two rows of intestines arranged in an 'S' shape in the middle abdomen. The inner diameters were

[Atresia of the jejunum, ileum and colon; a retrospective study].

The results are described of a retrospective study of 142 patients with atresias of the jejunum, ileum and colon in the Netherlands. It is pointed out that pregnancy had often been complicated by polyhydramnios. This may lead to an early diagnosis in the prenatal period. Whenever a neonate presents with bilious vomiting or distension of the abdomen, closer examination for intestinal atresia should take place. The production of meconium does not rule out the diagnosis of intestinal atresia.

The anatomical type of atresia drives the risk of home parenteral nutrition of infants with congenital jejunoileal atresia.

UNLABELLED: Congenital jejunoileal atresia is a rare intestinal malformation with favourable survival in high-income settings, but affected infants remain at risk of prolonged intestinal failure and dependence on parenteral nutrition (PN). Data on nutritional outcomes by anatomical subtype remain limited. We aimed to quantify the risk of discharge with home PN according to the type of congenital jejunoileal atresia and to compare neonatal outcomes across anatomical subtypes. We conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study including infants with congenital jejunoileal atresia managed be

Outcomes in patients with short bowel syndrome after autologous intestinal reconstruction: Does etiology matter?

BACKGROUND: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of intestinal failure in children. Many factors have been investigated in an attempt to define which parameters influence most survival and ability to wean off parenteral nutrition (PN). The aim of this study was to investigate if aetiology of SBS affects the outcomes in paediatric patients treated with autologous gastrointestinal reconstructive surgery. METHODS: All children with SBS who underwent autologous gastrointestinal reconstructive surgery between 2002 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed and outcome measures were reco

Analysis of Ileal Atresia from Prenatal Ultrasound to Postoperative Follow-up: Two Case Reports.

BACKGROUND: Congenital ileal atresia is a rare neonatal disease, the most common type of intestinal malformation in newborns, and one of the most common causes of congenital intestinal obstruction. It can cause various digestive system symptoms, including abdominal distension, vomiting, abnormal bowel movements, etc. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening. A prenatal ultrasound examination can assist clinical diagnosis of congenital ileal atresia, and those with a clear prenatal diagnosis should undergo surgical treatment after birth.
