The diagnostic utility of combined diffusion-weighted imaging and conventional magnetic resonance imaging for detection and localization of non palpable undescended testes.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of combined diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including fat-suppression T2WI for identification and localization of non palpable undescended testes (UDTs). METHODS: This prospective study included 40 consecutive patients, with 47 non-palpable undescended testes (unilateral in 33 cases and bilateral in seven cases). Their age ranged from 5 months to 18 years, mean = 7.5 ± 5.9 years. MRI examinations included T1WI, T2WI, fat-suppression T2WI and DWI at b value of 50, 400 and 800 s/mm(

The metabolic effects of growth hormone in adipose tissue.

There is a general consensus that a reduction in growth hormone (GH) secretion results in obesity. However, the pathophysiologic role of GH … th weight loss. However, whereas GH replacement in patients with GHD leads to specific depletion of intra-abdominal fat, administering GH to obese individuals does not seem to result in a consistent reduction or redistribution of body fat. Although administering GH to obese non-GHD subjects has only led to equivocal results, more recent studies indicate that GH still …

Exercise modalities for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity: comparative effects on visceral fat, metabolism, and inflammatory markers from a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity correlates closely with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with central adiposity, dyslipidemia and chronic low-grade inflammation as typical pathological features. Physical exercise is recommended as a safe core non-pharmacological intervention, but the relative efficacy of different exercise modes for comprehensive metabolic improvement remains controversial and unclear. OBJECTIVE: This network meta-analysis comprehensively compared the effects of diverse exercise interventions on abdominal fat distribution, glycolipid metabolism and inflammatory biomarkers in obese T2DM p

Gastric Submucosal Fat Accumulation Is Associated with Insulin Resistance in Patients with Obesity.

PURPOSE: Ectopic fat accumulation plays a significant role in obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, and few studies have reported an association between ectopic gastric fat and metabolic risk factors. We aim to fulfill this need by assessing the degree of gastric submucosal fat accumulation in pathologic sections of 190 sleeve gastrectomy specimens. METHODS: Study patients were divided into two groups (D1 and D2) based on whether fat accumulation exceeded 1/3 of the submucosa of the stomach. Demographic and metabolic risk factors were compared between the two groups. Metabolic risk variables

Subtype-specific Body Composition and Metabolic Risk in Patients With Primary Aldosteronism.

BACKGROUND: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with increased metabolic risks. However, controversy exists as to which subtype of PA has a higher metabolic risk between bilateral and lateralized PA. This study aimed to assess the body composition of 2 PA subtypes, bilateral PA and lateralized PA, according to sex and autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS) and their contribution to comorbidities. DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 400 patients with PA (females, n = 210) and 1:10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 4000) were enrolled. The skeletal muscle area (SMA), subcutaneous fat area

Comparison of the effects of six-week time-restricted eating on weight loss, body composition, and visceral fat in overweight older men and women.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a six-week time-restricted eating (TRE) intervention in reducing body weight, fat loss, and visceral fat in overweight, older adult men and women (age range = 65-74 years). Another objective was to determine the feasibility of widespread use of TRE in older women and men. The study randomly assigned 116 healthy, non-smoking participants to one of two conditions: TRE or educational control participants. Participants in the TRE group were instructed to not consume calorie containing beverages or food for 16 h per day, from 8:00 pm to 12

Biomarkers of dysfunctional visceral fat.

Dysfunctional visceral fat plays a key role in the initiation and maintenance of chronic inflammation, liver steatosis and subsequent systemic insulin resistance that primes the body for development of metabolic syndrome. These changes, occurring with or without obesity, lead to type 2 diabetes. In this chapter, we first provide a brief overview of the factors that lead to dysfunctional visceral fat and their relative importance. Adipose tissue has a great plasticity which allows for cell hypertrophy and, when needed, angiogenesis to sustain hypertrophy. Due to the prevalence of inexpensive an

Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training Combined with Blood Flow Restriction at Different Phases on Abdominal Visceral Fat among Obese Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and blood flow restriction (BFR) represent a critical nonpharmacological strategy to reduce the excess deposition of visceral fat, as well as relevant complications, among obese populations. Applying BFR at diverse phases may have different effects. Therefore, the exercise program of this study combined HIIT with BFR, so as to explore the effect of BFR on abdominal visceral fat area and its mechanism in different periods of HIIT. The aim is to provide a more effective exercise prescription for obese people who want to reduce visceral fat quic

Impact of visceral fat on the prognosis of coronavirus disease 2019: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Clarification of the risk factors for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity is strongly warranted for global health. Recent studies have indicated that elevated body mass index (BMI) is associated with unfavorable progression of COVID-19. This is assumed to be due to excessive deposition of visceral adipose tissue (VAT); however, the evidence investigating the association between intra-abdominal fat and COVID-19 prognosis is sparse. We therefore investigated whether measuring the amount of intra-abdominal fat is useful to predict the prognosis of COVID-19. METHODS: The pres…

[Intraabdominal fat necrosis].

The processes that course with intraabdominal fat necrosis often manifest with acute or subacute abdominal pain; these clinical findings can be caused by various conditions, including epiploic appendagitis, omental infarction, encapsulated fat necrosis, mesenteric panniculitis, appendicitis, diverticulitis, and certain neoplasms. In this context, although the anatomic location of the pain and accompanying symptomatology can help orient the diagnosis, there is a risk of unnecessary surgery. Imaging tests like ultrasonography and especially computed tomography are essential for diagnosing intraa

Effects of concurrent training on fat mass and its distribution in individuals with overweight or obesity: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and exploratory regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major global health challenge. While aerobic and resistance exercises are commonly used for obesity management, the effects of concurrent training (CT, combining both modalities) on fat mass and its distribution in individuals with overweight or obesity remain unclear. This study examined the effects of CT’s on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and tried to identify optimal exercise prescriptions. METHODS: Six databases were systematically searched through September 2025. Randomized controlled trials comparing CT interventions with se

Linking visceral fat accumulation to gut microbiota: key bacterial taxa and their roles in the glycogen synthesis pathway.

Obesity, marked by visceral fat accumulation, has a complex relationship with the gut microbiome that impacts body weight and fat accumulation. However, previous studies did not account for fat distribution, reflecting only overall fat mass, leaving specifics of this relationship partially understood. Here we analyzed the mechanistic links between visceral fat and the microbiome in a large cohort of healthy Koreans. Using permutational multivariate analysis of variance and prediction modeling, we examined associations between microbial profiles and metabolic variables including insulin, trigly

Visceral fat percentage for prediction of outcome in uterine cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic role of adiposity in uterine cervical cancer (CC) is largely unknown. Abdominal fat distribution may better reflect obesity than body mass index. This study aims to describe computed tomography (CT)-assessed abdominal fat distribution in relation to clinicopathologic characteristics, survival, and tumor gene expression in CC. METHODS: The study included 316 CC patients diagnosed during 2004-2017 who had pre-treatment abdominal CT. CT-based 3D segmentation of total-, subcutaneous- and visceral abdominal fat volumes (TAV, SAV and VAV) allowed for calculation of viscera

The relationship between the mode of presentation, CT-derived body composition, systemic inflammatory grade and survival in colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Within colorectal cancer, the systemic inflammatory response (SIR) and CT-derived body composition, particularly the loss of lean muscle mass, are independently associated with oncological outcomes; however, no study has included both non-metastatic and metastatic disease. The present study analyses the association between body composition, mode of presentation, SIR and survival in patients with TNM I-IV colon cancer. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with colon cancer from 2011 to 2014 were identified. The SIR was stratified using systemic inflammatory grade (SIG). Staging CT scans wer

Age-specific and sex-specific associations of visceral adipose tissue mass and fat-to-muscle mass ratio with risk of mortality.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have explored the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass and fat-to-muscle mass ratio (FMR) and mortality. We aimed to evaluate the sex-specific association of VAT and FMR with all-cause and cause-specific mortality by age. METHODS: A total of 438 896 participants (49.8% men, mean age ± standard deviation: 57 ± 8 years for men; 56 ± 8 years for women) were included from the UK Biobank cohort. The nature of VAT was predictive, as obtained by sex-stratified, non-linear prediction models. Fat and muscle mass were estimated using a bioelectrical impedan
