The role of iron deficiency in heart failure.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for several physiological processes in the body beyond erythropoiesis. Iron deficiency (ID) is a common comorbidity observed in about 50% of patients with stable heart failure (HF) irrespective of the left ventricular function. The presence of ID is often as a multi-factorial condition, and it is associated with exercise intolerance, reduced quality of life, increased hospitalization rate, and mortality risk regardless of anaemia. The intravenous administration of iron to correct ID has emerged as a promising treatment in HF with reduced ejection fraction as

Iron deficiency, pregnancy, and neonatal development.

Anemia affects 36% of pregnant women worldwide. Of those affected, around 40% is due to iron deficiency (ID). Iron is an essential micronutrient involved in vital processes such as erythropoiesis, immune responses, and importantly-during pregnancy-placental and fetal development. Although menstrual bleeding can impact the incidence of ID even before the onset of pregnancy, this narrative review is pregnancy focused and will explore the impact of ID on placental development and iron uptake, fetal development and immunity, and maternal and infant susceptibility to infection. Although there have

Iron deficiency and sexual dysfunction in women.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual dysfunction negatively affects approximately 40% to 50% of adult women across various stages of life. Common risk factors include sexual traumas, relationship problems, chronic conditions, medication side effects, and poor physical health, including iron deficiency. OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes a presentation from a symposium that discussed the types and causes of sexual dysfunction at key times in women's lives, focusing on the relationship between iron deficiency and sexual dysfunction. METHODS: The symposium was held at the XV Annual European Urogynaecological A

Iron deficiency and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive review of iron deficiency in the setting of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and to evaluate the utility of iron supplementation in PAH. Iron deficiency is present in 33%-46% of patients with PAH and has been associated with reduced exercise capacity, compromised oxygen handling, deterioration of right ventricular function, and even mortality. Iron homeostasis and the pathophysiology of PAH are highly intertwined, which has inspired the use of iron supplementation in patients with iron deficiency and PAH. A literature search

Uterine disorders and iron deficiency anemia.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a clinical entity which can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Classification according to the acronym PALM-COEIN (polyp, adenomyosis, leiomyoma, malignancy, and hyperplasia; coagulopathy, ovulatory dysfunction, endometrial, iatrogenic, and not otherwise classified) provides a structured approach to establish the cause of AUB. The goal of this review is to discuss the different mechanisms and the relationship between uterine disorders and AUB. Heavy menstrual bleeding, a subgroup of AUB, is more closely related to the presence of uterine fibroids. The relationsh

Desiderosmia: a manifestation of iron deficiency in pregnancy.

A pregnant woman in her 20s presented with an excessive desire to smell a specific household cleaning product. She was found to have severe iron deficiency anaemia and her symptoms resolved following intravenous iron supplementation. She described symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath and olfactory cravings. The specific scent could not be replicated with other smells and the woman had to significantly modify her lifestyle to accommodate the excessive desire. She had a similar experience during her prior pregnancy which resolved after the correction of severe iron deficiency anaemia. This u

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Celiac Disease.

The iron absorption process developsmainly in the proximal duodenum. This portion of the intestine is typically destroyed in celiac disease (CD), resulting in a reduction in absorption of iron and subsequent iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In fact, the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestation (EIM) of CD is IDA, with a prevalence between 12 and 82% (in relation with the various reports) in patients with new CD diagnosis. The primary treatment of CD is the gluten-free diet (GFD), which is associated with adequate management of IDA, if present. Iron replacement treatment historically has been

Meckel's diverticulum in an adult with iron deficiency.

Meckel's diverticulum is a true diverticulum caused by the incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during gestation. It is the most common congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract. Meckel's diverticulum is a rare presentation in adults, especially because symptomatic patients present in early childhood. We present a 57-year-old woman with symptomatic iron deficiency after recent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory use. After normal upper and lower endoscopy, a capsule endoscopy showed an oozing polyp in the distal ileum. The small bowel was surgically resected, and histopathology

Iron deficiency after kidney transplantation.

Iron deficiency (ID) is highly prevalent in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and has been independently associated with an excess mortality risk in this population. Several causes lead to ID in KTRs, including inflammation, medication and an increased iron need after transplantation. Although many studies in other populations indicate a pivotal role for iron as a regulator of the immune system, little is known about the impact of ID on the immune system in KTRs. Moreover, clinical trials in patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure have shown that correction of ID, with or witho

Anemia and iron deficiency in Crohn's disease.

Introduction: Anemia is a common extraintestinal complication of Crohn's disease (CD) mainly caused by iron deficiency, that affects the quality of life in CD patients. Elucidation of the etiology and pathology of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and anemia of chronic diseases (ACD) has developed in recent years. Common biochemical parameters of iron status are insufficient for assessment of patients with anemia and CD. Thus, novel iron indices are required for accurate assessment in IDA patients with CD. Oral iron supplementation for IDA treatment is common and is associated with minor gastrointe
