The prevalence of radiographic maxillary sinus findings in 293 elderly subjects (76, 81, and 86 years old) were investigated with the use of panoramic radiography: 124 subjects were edentulous in both jaws, 167 had an edentulous maxilla, and 169 had at least one natural tooth left. Mucous cysts or diffuse mucosal thickenings were found in 12% of the subjects. Of the mucosal thickenings, 70% were found in subjects with a dentate upper jaw (p < 0.05), suggesting an odontogenic origin for that proportion (40%) exceeding the prevalence in subjects edentulous in the maxilla. That the prevalence of

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon and aggressive jaw cyst with a high recurrence rate. It may grow into a large size. Diagnosis of the cyst is challenging since it may be confused with some other jaw cysts and malignancies. Treatment methods vary from conservative surgery to radical bone resection. In this case series, we briefly present five cases of GOC diagnosed and treated at our clinic. Thorough histopathological diagnosis and long-term follow-up are necessary in patients with GOC.

Non-odontogenic cystic lesions and so-called "pseudocystic" lesions of the jaws are reviewed, summarizing most recent data from the literature and with illustrations. Pseudocyst lesions include the aneurysmal bone cyst, the solitary bone cyst and Stafne's lacunae. Non-odontogenic cystic lesions, characterized by the presence of a non-odontogenic epithelial lining, are represented by the nasopalatin cyst, the nasoalveolar cyst and an entity currently covering globulomaxillary, midline palatin, midline mandibular and midline alveolar cysts.

Actinomyces-associated lesions in the jaw, such as radicular cyst and osteomyelitis, have been reported by many authors. The lesions are caused by infection from peripheral sites and can be seen to contain Actinomyces druses on pathologic examination. To our knowledge, no previous reports have described Actinomyces-associated calcification in the jaw, although the lesions in the jaw often include druses. We report here a rare case of Actinomyces-associated calcifications in a dentigerous cyst of the mandible.

Solitary bone cysts are uncommon. They have a reported incidence of 0.6% and are commonest in the mandible. The case of a 16-year-old patient who attended Accident and Emergency with a fractured mandible and the incidental finding of a solitary bone cyst is presented. Solitary bone cysts are usually asymptomatic and generally heal fully following surgical exploration. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This case report aims to increase awareness of the general dental practitioner of solitary bone cysts as a possible finding in patients with pathological jaw fractures and radiolucencies of the jaws. It ou

The aneurysmal bone cyst is a type of pseudocysts of the jaw. It is a nonneoplastic lesion of the bone, characterized by replacement with fibro-osseous tissue containing blood-filled sinusoidal or cavernous spaces. The lesion remains a relatively uncommon finding in the facial bones, and the cause and pathogenesis are yet to be elucidated. Aneurysmal bone cyst was first described as a distinct clinical and pathologic entity by Jaffe and Lichtenstein in 1942. Aneurysmal bone cyst comprises 1.5% of all nonodontogenic cysts of the jaws and 1.9% of all aneurysmal bone cysts of skeleton. A rare cas

Dentists should be aware of the multiple jaw cysts of NBCS that may develop in patients as young as 7 to 8 years. As the jaw cysts frequently are the initial symptom, dentists have the opportunity to detect the syndrome early, before the patients seek medical treatment. Any young patient with multiple odontogenic keratocysts in the jaws can develop other conditions characteristic of the disease. A careful family history should be taken, and the patient should be monitored closely for subsequent clinical manifestations of the disease.

Cystic lesions of the mandible and maxilla are easily recognizable with various imaging modalities: different conventional X-ray films, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In this article, the author defines and classifies the most-encountered kinds of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts and presents in each case the various parameters that should be analyzed in order to reach a radiological diagnosis: location of the lesion within the mandible, its relationship to adjacent structures, its shape, etc. Nevertheless, there remain cystic lesions that cannot be differentiated from

Simple bone cysts, also referred to as traumatic bone cysts, are benign connective tissue-lined cavities occurring most commonly in young people. Most of the time, they occur as solitary radiolucencies. In the jaws, they also have been reported to occur concurrently with benign fibro-osseous lesions. The radiographic appearance of simple bone cysts could be confused with other jaw cysts and benign tumors. This case report presents a patient who had 3 separate lesions simultaneously within the mandible. The right mandibular lesion presented as a multilocular radiolucency. The 2 left mandibular …

PURPOSE: To answer the following clinical research question: "Among patients with multiple basal cell carcinomas (mBCCs), can panoramic radiograph (PaR) facilitate the diagnosis of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS)?"
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled mBCCs subjects who presented to a German tertiary care center between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2021. The primary predictor was presence of syndromic mBCCs, and the main outcomes were jaw cysts and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). Descriptive, bi- and multivariate statistics, diagnostic test evaluation, and number needed to screen (NNS) we…

BACKGROUND: Gorlin syndrome (GS) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterised by multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and an increased risk of jaw cysts and early childhood medulloblastoma. Heterozygous germline variants in PTCH1 and SUFU encoding components of the Sonic hedgehog pathway explain the majority of cases. Here, we aimed to delineate genotype-phenotype correlations in GS.
METHODS: We assessed genetic and phenotypic data for 182 individuals meeting the diagnostic criteria for GS (median age: 47.1; IQR: 31.1-61.1). A total of 126 patients had a heterozygous pathogenic variant, 9…

The aim of this research is to analyze the prevalence of dentigerous cysts (DCs) in a population-based cohort in British Columbia, Canada, and to report unusual cases associated with DC. The database of the British Columbia Oral Biopsy Service was searched from 1998 to 2007. 2082 histologically confirmed DCs from 2029 patients were retrieved and retrospectively analyzed for incidence, age, gender and ethnicity. The results show that this is a common jaw cyst with male predilection, has a peak incidence in younger adults and is more common in Caucasians. Multiple DCs, representing 2.5% of the c

The nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is the most common of the non-odontogenic cyst of the jaws. This cysts are usually central or unilateral with no prevalence of side occurrence. The NPDC is the most frequent developmental, nonodontogenic cyst of the jaws. This cyst originates from epithelial remnants from the nasopalatine duct. The cells could be activated spontaneously during life, or are eventually stimulated by the irritating action of various agents (infection, etc.). Generally, patients present without clinical signs and symptoms. Therefore, the tentative diagnosis "nasopalatine duct cyst
