Pulp response to and cariogenicity of Lactobacillus casei in monoinfected gnotobiotic rats.

The maxillary molar pulps of germ-free rats were mechanically exposed and suspensions of a strain of freshly grown Lactobacillus casei were applied to the pulp wounds. The pulps were left open to the oral environment, and the animals were maintained within the isolator until death. In the majority of teeth, pulp necrosis was evident and apical inflammation was present in 40% of the specimens. The remaining monoinfected animals were bred and the litters were placed on a 46% sucrose diet to determine the cariogenicity of the test strain of L. casei in the mandibular molars. The organism proved t…

Enhancement of hematopoietic response of mice by subcutaneous administration of Lactobacillus casei.

Mice that had received heat-killed Lactobacillus casei (LC 9018) subcutaneously (s.c.) showed enhanced resistance to systemic (i.e., intravenous) infection with Listeria monocytogenes, but the antilisterial resistance of mice was less augmented by s.c. administration of Propionibacterium acnes ("Corynebacterium parvum"). Though there was little change in the total number of splenic leukocytes after s.c. administration of LC 9018, the monocyte-macrophage ratio increased after treatment, reaching its peak on day 5 to 7 after injection. The number of progenitor cells that form macrophage colonies…

Protective effect of Lactobacillus casei on Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mice.

The protective effect of heat-killed Lactobacillus casei YIT9018 (LC 9018) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mice was compared with that of Corynebacterium parvum. Survival of mice after intraperitoneal (i.p.) infection with P. aeruginosa was augmented in mice that had been pretreated i.p. with LC 9018 5 days previously. Similar treatment of mice with C. parvum, however, was not effective at all. Moreover, mice became more susceptible to infection with P. aeruginosa after such treatment. Growth of P. aeruginosa in the peritoneal cavity and spleen was markedly inhibited in LC 9018-pre…

Augmentation of host resistance to Listeria monocytogenes infection by Lactobacillus casei.

The effect of heat-killed Lactobacillus casei YIT 9018 (LC 9018), a potent antitumor agent as well as a potent macrophage-activating agent, on the resistance of mice to Listeria monocytogenes was studied. Mice pretreated intravenously (i.v.) with 0.5 mg of LC 9018 showed enhanced resistance to subsequent i.v. infection with L. monocytogenes. Antigenic cross-reaction between L. monocytogenes and LC 9018 was not seen in the delayed footpad reaction in mice, and LC 9018 inhibited the growth of L. monocytogenes in the liver and spleen of athymic nude mice. Therefore the antilisterial activity of L…

[Effectiveness of a lactobacillus vaccine on trichomonas infections in women. Preliminary results].

This is the report on a multi-centre study of the treatment of 444 women with trichomoniasis vaginalis using Solcotrichovac, a vaccine containing at least 7 x 10(9) inactivated microorganisms of various strains of lactobacillus acidophilus in each 0.5 ml dose. One year after the first vaccination 427 of the patients (96.2%) were followed up, and 92.5% of them were found to be cured of clinical symptoms; the remaining 7.5% must be considered as not cured, as either the slide or the culture was positive. We are convinced by these results that vaccination with Solcotrichovac represents an enhance…

Regulation effect of Lactobacillus johnsonii on chickens infected with Ascaridia galli.

Ascaridia galli, a highly prevalent intestinal parasite of poultry globally, poses significant challenges to prevention and control strategies in poultry industry due to its increasing resistance to anthelmintic. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the regulatory effects of Lactobacillus johnsonii on growth performance and intestinal health of broilers infected with A. galli. In this study, 80 one-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, which included two levels of L. johnsonii (0 or 1 × 10⁹ CFU/mL) and two infection statuses (A. galli chal…

Comparison of the inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus supernatant and coculture on Gardnerella vaginalis.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal lactobacilli play a crucial role in inhibiting bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis (G. vaginalis), a key contributor to dysbiosis and bacterial vaginosis. We aimed to compare the inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus cell-free supernatants on G. vaginalis growth with those observed in Lactobacillus-G. vaginalis coculture, an experimental setup that more closely mimics in vivo conditions. RESULTS: To identify the optimal medium for coculture experiments, MRS broth and NYC-III broth were compared. NYC-III significantly enhanced the growth of G. vaginalis and four of the five…

Study on the alleviative effect of Lactobacillus plantarum on Eimeria falciformis infection.

Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are specialized intracellular parasitic protozoa that cause severe coccidiosis when they infect their hosts. Animals infected with Eimeria develop clinical symptoms, such as anorexia, diarrhea, and hematochezia, which can even cause death. Although the current preferred regimen for the treatment of coccidiosis is antibiotics, this treatment strategy is limited by the ban on antibiotics and the growing problem of drug resistance. Therefore, the exploration of alternative methods for controlling coccidiosis has attracted much attention. Lactobacillus plantarum has b…

The role of Lactobacillus in inflammatory bowel disease: from actualities to prospects.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), a chronic nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease, is comprised of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease (CD). IBD is closely related to a systemic inflammatory reaction and affects the progression of many intestinal and extraintestinal diseases. As one of the representative bacteria for probiotic-assisted therapy in IBD, multiple strains of Lactobacillus have been proven to alleviate intestinal damage and strengthen the intestinal immunological barrier, epithelial cell barrier, and mucus barrier. Lactobacillus also spares no effort in the alleviatio…

Stimulatory Effect of Lactobacillus Metabolites on Colonic Contractions in Newborn Rats.

Microbiota are known to play an important role in gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology. Microbiota and their metabolites can affect gut motility, neural regulation and the enteric endocrine systems and immune systems of the gut. The use of fermented/hydrolyzed products may be a promising new avenue for stimulating gastrointestinal motility. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lactobacillus metabolites (PP), produced using a U.S.-patented fermentation method, on rat colon motility in vitro. The distal colon was incised from newborn male Wistar rats. A sensitive…

Effect of 17β-estradiol on a human vaginal Lactobacillus crispatus strain.

Lactobacilli and estrogens play essential roles in vaginal homeostasis. We investigated the potential direct effect of 17β-estradiol on a vaginal strain of Lactobacillus crispatus, the major bacterial species of the vaginal microbiota. 17β-estradiol (10-6 to 10-10 M) had no effect on L. crispatus growth, but markedly affected the membrane dynamics of this bacterium. This effect appeared consistent with a signal transduction process. The surface polarity and aggregation potential of the bacterium were unaffected by exposure to 17β-estradiol, but its mean size was significantly reduced. 17β-estr…

Contribution of Lactobacillus iners to Vaginal Health and Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Lactobacillus iners, first described in 1999, is a prevalent bacterial species of the vaginal microbiome. As L. iners does not easily grow on de Man-Rogosa-Sharpe agar, but can grow anaerobically on blood agar, it has been initially overlooked by traditional culture methods. It was not until the wide application of molecular biology techniques that the function of L. iners in the vaginal microbiome was carefully explored. L. iners has the smallest genome among known Lactobacilli and it has many probiotic characteristics, but is partly different from other major vaginal Lactobacillus species, s…
