MUMPS as a host language for AIDA.

In this contribution, the main characteristics of MUMPS, the host language of AIDA, are briefly discussed. This is basically an introductory text for readers who had had no previous experience with MUMPS, on the programming side. After a short introduction, its history is summarized. Then the language itself is introduced and illustrated with examples; for the sake of brevity not all commands, functions and other features are discussed. In the next section, an introduction to MUMPS' stronghold is given: the database structure. Finally, we give the main reasons why we have chosen MUMPS as AIDA'…

The legible body and the language of cognition.

Neural activity moves the body to act on the world, and the world returns through the body to shape neural activity. Systems neuroscience built tasks to cut this loop, isolating low-dimensional, task-related signals and discarding the rest. Tasks suited cognition as classically conceived: general-purpose machinery between sensation and action, performing latent computations abstracted from specific behaviors. With recording techniques limited to tracking individual neurons and discrete actions, it took tasks to make cognition legible by supplying meaning within a limited but generalizable fram

The Structure of Indigenous Trance Language.

The structures of trance texts used in healing rituals from five Indigenous cultures (e.g. Navajo) are compared in order to identify common factors that may be relevant to the effects of Indigenous trance languages. In contrast to modern trance languages that use continuous texts, the five Indigenous texts are completely segmented, consisting mainly of two-liners and multi-liners. Two-liners are used to construct an imaginary reality that serves as a context in which multi-liners deepen emotional physical experiences. While the Indigenous trance languages differ significantly from the language…

Learning the language of life with AI.

In 2021, a year before ChatGPT took the world by storm amid the excitement about generative artificial intelligence (AI), AlphaFold 2 cracked the 50-year-old protein-folding problem, predicting three-dimensional (3D) structures for more than 200 million proteins from their amino acid sequences. This accomplishment was a precursor to an unprecedented burgeoning of large language models (LLMs) in the life sciences. That was just the beginning. In recent months, we have moved into a hyperaccelerated phase of new foundation models, pretrained on massive datasets, with the ability to perform a wide…

Birth of a Language in the Backlands of Brazil.

It is assumed that in order to acquire a language, children must be exposed to a language during the critical period, which generally lasts until puberty. Here, we report on Cena, an emergent sign language that has developed among a small group of deaf people in an isolated town in the state of Piauí, Brazil. Starting three generations ago, it has developed into a fully functioning communicative system with all characteristics of a typical human language even though Cena developed in a linguistic vacuum. What makes Cena interesting is that we are reasonably certain that Cena had no external in…

Reading: The Confluence of Vision and Language.

The scientific study of reading has a rich history that spans disciplines from vision science to linguistics, psychology, cognitive neurosci … imulus. In this review, we describe the sequence of operations that transforms visual features into language, how the key neural circuits are sculpted by experience during development, and what goes awry in children for whom learning to read is a struggle.

The Neurocognition of Developmental Disorders of Language.

Developmental disorders of language include developmental language disorder, dyslexia, and motor-speech disorders such as articulation disorder and stuttering. These disorders have generally been explained by accounts that focus on their behavioral rather than neural characteristics; their processing rather than learning impairments; and each disorder separately rather than together, despite their commonalities and comorbidities. Here we update and review a unifying neurocognitive account-the Procedural circuit Deficit Hypothesis (PDH). The PDH posits that abnormalities of brain structures und…

[Speech and Language Disorders in the Elderly].

Cerebrovascular insults and neurodegenerative diseases are the main causes of acquired speech and language disorders. A massive increase in the prevalence of both is evident from the age of 65 years. By the age of 90 years, more than 10 % of the population would have experienced a stroke and 30 % would have suffered from neurodegenerative diseases. Common risk factors are adiposity, hypertension and diabetes. The term aphasia subsumes acquired language disorders that have to be further classified in order to optimize diagnostics and therapy. Also prognosis depends on whether the disease is pro…

[Dementia with motor and language disorders].

Memory is not the only core diagnostic criteria in Alzheimer's disease and many dementias are characterized by other cognitive deficits. Mor … uding basic clinical evaluation are described. These complex clinical syndromes involving motor and language systems are important for the clinical practice since they are part of diagnostic criteria of several neurodegenerative diseases and can be considered as phenotypical markers of neurodegeneration.

Speech and language delay in children.

Speech and language delay in children is associated with increased difficulty with reading, writing, attention, and socialization. Although physicians should be alert to parental concerns and to whether children are meeting expected developmental milestones, there currently is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routine use of formal screening instruments in primary care to detect speech and language delay. In children not meeting the expected milestones for speech and language, a comprehensive developmental evaluation is essential, because atypical language development can be a …

The language of medically unexplained dyspnea.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained dyspnea (MUD) refers to a condition characterized by a sensation of dyspnea and is typically applied to patients presenting with anxiety and hyperventilation without cardiopulmonary explanations for their dyspnea. The diagnosis is difficult. We investigated whether descriptors of dyspnea and associated symptoms of MUD are differentially diagnostic. METHODS: A respiratory symptom checklist incorporating 61 spontaneously reported descriptors of dyspnea was administered to 96 patients with MUD and 195 patients with cardiopulmonary diseases. Symptom factors measu

Dyslexia in English as a second language.

This study focused on English as L2 in a group of Norwegian dyslexic 12 year olds, compared to an age and gender matched control group. Norwegian school children learn English from the first grades on. The subjects were assessed with a test battery of verbal and written tasks. First, they were given a comprehension task; second, a model sentence task; third, two pragmatic tasks, and fourth, three tasks of literacy. The verbal tasks were scored according to comprehension, morphology, syntax and semantics, while the literacy tasks were scored by spelling, translation and reading skills. It was h

Language of dyspnea in panic disorder.

Dyspnea is a key symptom in panic attacks. This study investigated different types of dyspnea induced by the 35% CO2 challenge test given to patients with panic disorder (PD). The types of dyspnea provide room for possible conjectures on neurophysiological pathways involved in the experience of breathing discomfort in PD and in the panic-respiration connection. Factor analysis applied to the Dyspnea Questionnaire identified three main factors: breathing effort, sense of suffocation, and rapid breath. Factor scores for breathing effort and sense of suffocation significantly discriminated betwee

Development of language in Rett syndrome.

Ninety-nine cases of Rett syndrome (RTT) diagnosed clinically (age range 3 years 6 months to 29 years 9 months) were evaluated for the ability of language. The presence of meaningful words, vocabularies, and ages at the start and disappearance of speech were assessed. Phenotype/genotype correlation was evaluated in 22 cases in whom mutations of the genes of methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) existed. Fifty-five cases (55.5%) could speak some words, and of them eight cases (14.5%) spoke two-word sentences. No case had more than 40 words. The vocabularies were mainly bilabial words, known as t…

Speech and language therapy: is it effective?

As part of a needs assessment of local speech and language therapy services, a review of the literature was carried out to examine the evidence for effectiveness of speech and language therapy. Purchasing authorities and general practice fundholders need to know whether what they are buying for their local population is effective, and whether the service is being provided in the most cost-effective way. This paper considers the published evidence and some of the limitations of the studies, and gives suggestions for purchasing speech and language therapy services based on current evidence. More…
