Crystal structure generation with autoregressive large language modeling.

The generation of plausible crystal structures is often the first step in predicting the structure and properties of a material from its chemical composition. However, most current methods for crystal structure prediction are computationally expensive, slowing the pace of innovation. Seeding structure prediction algorithms with quality generated candidates can overcome a major bottleneck. Here, we introduce CrystaLLM, a methodology for the versatile generation of crystal structures, based on the autoregressive large language modeling (LLM) of the Crystallographic Information File (CIF) format.

Comparing traditional natural language processing and large language models for mental health status classification: a multi-model evaluation.

The substantial increase in mental health disorders globally necessitates scalable, accurate tools for detecting and classifying these conditions in digital environments. This study addresses the critical challenge of automated mental health classification by comparing three distinct computational approaches: (1) Traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) with advanced feature engineering, (2) Prompt-engineered large language models (LLMs), and (3) Fine-tuned LLMs. The dataset consisted of over 51,000 publicly available text statements from social media platforms, tagged with seven mental h…

A Novel Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Approach for Alzheimer's Disease Detection Using Large Language and Vision-Language Models.

In response to the rapid onset of super-aged societies and the growing prevalence of dementia, our research proposes a multimodal, on-device large language model (LLM)-based agent designed for comprehensive elderly care. Unlike traditional models focused only on dementia diagnosis, our approach leverages a compact, privacy-preserving LLM as the core technology, enabling a wide range of support functions-including cognitive assessment-directly on the device. The pipeline begins with automatic speech recognition (ASR) to convert user speech into text, followed by a vision-language model (VLM) th

Modeling Structure-Building in the Brain With CCG Parsing and Large Language Models.

To model behavioral and neural correlates of language comprehension in naturalistic environments, researchers have turned to broad-coverage tools from natural-language processing and machine learning. Where syntactic structure is explicitly modeled, prior work has relied predominantly on context-free grammars (CFGs), yet such formalisms are not sufficiently expressive for human languages. Combinatory categorial grammars (CCGs) are sufficiently expressive directly compositional models of grammar with flexible constituency that affords incremental interpretation. In this work, we evaluate whethe

Leave No Data Behind: Exploring a new paradigm in oncology with foundation models and large language models.

Foundation models (FMs) and large language models (LLMs) are transforming cancer AI by integrating heterogeneous data sources, including medical imaging, electronic health records, and molecular profiles. By learning from large-scale, unstructured, and label-free inputs, these models may support diagnosis, biomarker discovery, prognostic assessment, treatment personalization, and workflow automation. In this narrative review, we propose the paradigm of "Leave No Data Behind" to describe the promise that broad oncology data integration may generate clinically meaningful outputs. We critically a…

Large language models accurately extract aortic information from abdominal imaging reports in a large, real-world database.

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining robust surveillance programs for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is important, but these programs are expensive and labor-intensive, typically requiring manual data review by trained health care professionals. Studies have shown that natural language processing software can assist in these functions, but each task-specific algorithm requires human-directed training before use. Our objective was to evaluate the use of a large language model (LLM) to extract AAA-related data using generalized artificial intelligence, negating the need for task-based training. METHODS: T

Large language model-based biological age prediction in large-scale populations.

Accurate and convenient assessment of individual aging is crucial for identifying health risks and preventing aging-related diseases. Nonetheless, current aging proxies often face challenges such as methodological limitations, weak associations with adverse outcomes and limited generalizability. Here we propose a framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) to estimate individual overall and organ-specific aging using only health examination reports. We validated this approach across six population-based cohorts, encompassing over 10 million participants and demonstrated effectiveness…

Large Language Models' Simulation of Patient Comprehension of Discharge Summaries: Multimodel Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to generate and evaluate patient-facing medical materials. Through persona prompting, LLMs can be instructed to simulate responses from individuals with different demographic and experiential backgrounds, offering a scalable approach for approximating patient feedback. However, it remains unclear how closely these simulated persona-based responses reflect real patient perspectives, and whether this alignment is consistent across demographic subgroups. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether contemporary LLMs can simulate diverse pa…

Efficient and accurate steering of large language models through attention-guided feature learning.

Activation steering, or direct manipulation of internal activations to guide large language model (LLM) responses toward specific semantic concepts, is emerging as a promising avenue for both understanding how semantic concepts are stored within LLMs and advancing LLM capabilities. Yet, existing steering methods are remarkably brittle, with seemingly nonsteerable concepts becoming completely steerable based on subtle algorithmic choices in how concept-related features are extracted. In this work, we introduce an attention-guided framework for activation steering that overcomes three core chall

Feedback-driven rule induction and retrieval-augmented bias mitigation for large language models.

INTRODUCTION: Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming widely adopted for reasoning and decision-support tasks, yet they can inherit and reproduce gender-related biases present in their training data. Most existing bias-mitigation strategies depend on fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, prompt engineering, or interventions during pre-training, requiring either parameter updates or extensive manual prompt design. These requirements limit their applicability when the underlying model is available only as a closed-source or black-box system. METHODS: This work explores whether bias-mitigation …

Large Language Models in Colorectal Cancer Care and Clinical Decision Support: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide. The complexity of guideline-concordant care and unstructured clinical data has driven demand for decision-support tools. Large language models (LLMs) show promise for processing clinical data and patient-provider communication, yet evidence is fragmented, and a CRC-specific synthesis across the full care continuum is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review evaluates the current applications, performance determinants, and clinical implications of LLMs across the continuum of CRC care. METHOD…

Large language models can supplement the assessment of clinical high risk for psychosis.

Capturing psychosis risk before illness onset is an ongoing challenge for psychosis-spectrum studies. Natural language processing (NLP) tools can harness information embedded in the notes generated during clinical interviews to obtain more objective markers of psychosis risk; for this project, we used readily available assessor notes. The following project acts as proof of concept on the usefulness of AI-based tools to capture latent psychosis risk information. We used assessor notes for 2,077 Structured Interview for Psychosis-risk Syndromes interviews as input for different AI-based NLP mode
