Visceral Larva migrans is a human infection by the larvae of dog ascarids or, more rarely, ascarids of other animal species. It is endemic in France. Two cases which respectively manifested as acute oligoarthritis and inflammatory myalgia with increased muscle enzyme levels are reported. Manifestations of the minor forms of this infestation are reviewed.

The occurrence of the first seven cases of visceral larva migrans in Trinidad and Tobago is described. All cases occurred in children of the same family. The ELISA test was used to confirm the clinical diagnosis.

The ability of raccoon roundworm larvae, Baylisascaris procyonis, to produce ocular larva migrans (OLM) was studied in various experimental animals. In addition, the clinical and pathologic lesions were compared to those in suspected cases of human ocular baylisascariasis, in patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN). Ocular larva migrans was produced in squirrel monkeys, cynomolgus monkeys, mice, hamsters, grey squirrels, and woodchucks orally infected with B. procyonis eggs. The clinical and histologic lesions were primarily those of retinitis, retinal hemorrhages, reti…

Twenty-four patients with serologically confirmed toxocaral ocular larva migrans (OLM) and 24 age- and sex-matched controls were the subjects of an epidemiologic study. Information on the exposure to dogs and other factors possibly associated with transmission of toxocariasis was obtained by contacting the parents of the subjects. The odds of having had a dog present in the household within the year previous to onset of illness were 3 to 1 for cases vs controls. An association of pups (< 3 months) in the households of OLM patients within one year of onset was statistically significant (P < .05…

For both visceral larva migrans and alveolar hydatid diseases, it is the feces of companion animals that are the primary source of human infection. Clearly, whatever is done to reduce this form of environmental contamination and the prevalence of the parasites' infective stages will help to protect the health of the human population in the United States and Canada, particularly the children. Very important are appropriate anthelmintic treatment programs, especially for T. canis, and proper control of close associations between pets and people. Probably the known incidence of visceral larva mig…

The present work reports a case of a female patient complaining of itching and painful lesions affecting the oral mucosa for 7 months. Buccal and lip mucosa showed swelling and erythema, with serpiginous tracks. The patient was diagnosed with oral larva migrans, and the lesions resolved after ivermectin administration. At 18-month follow-up, no sign of recurrence was observed. Larva migrans can represent a pitfall in oral diagnosis and a stressful condition for the patient. Oral health care providers should be aware of this and keep this disease in mind as a possible differential diagnosis in …

Cutaneous larva migrans is a fairly common parasitic skin disease typically found in more tropical climates such as the southeastern United States, with the most commonly encountered organism known as the hookworm, Ancylostoma braziliense. Löeffler's syndrome is a rare pulmonary manifestation with vague diagnostic criteria but frequently characterized by diffuse migratory pulmonary infiltrates on imaging studies with accompanying serum eosinophilia. Here, we present a unique case of Löeffler's syndrome secondary to cutaneous larva migrans.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) occurs because of a host inflammatory response to the migrating larvae of a nematode. Patients usually present with fever, hepatomegaly and abdominal pain; vascular arterial complications are uncommon. A 19-year female presented with fever, jaundice, abdominal discomfort and melena. Computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple discrete, clustered, complex hepatic cystic lesions consistent with VLM, along with an arterial pseudoaneurysm from the right hepatic artery which was managed with endovascular coil embolisation.

Hepatic toxocarosis is caused by the dog´s roundworm, Toxocara canis. Responsible for an eosinophilic inflammatory syndrome causing liver damage that can be detected on ultrasound, computed tomography and sometimes magnetic resonance imaging. We report the case of a nine-year-old child, living in countryside, with a notion of cohabitation with canids. He presented a digestive symptomatology revealed by abdominal pain, with a hemeosinophilia in the hemogram. The etiological assessment of hyper eosinophilia objectified a positive Toxocara canisserology. The imaging assessment in search of digest

Cutaneous larva migrans syndrome is a subcutaneous dermatitis caused by hookworms' larvae, originating from animals in parasitic impasse in humans. Transcutaneous infestation is favored by contact with contaminated soil. We report the case of a 15-month-old child, native of Guinea - Bissau, suffering from cutaneous larva migrans syndrome on a malformed foot. This malformation in the form of a syndactyly, associated with a tumefaction of the foot cause a delay in the standing position. Besides, the fact that the child never wears shoes because of the sick foot is another factor contributing to …

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome is a clinical manifestation of systemic organ involvement by Toxocara species. VLM with involvement of the bladder and liver is a rare finding. A 62-year-old woman presented with diffuse bladder wall thickening and multiple liver masses with peripheral eosinophilia and urinary symptoms. We considered malignancy or eosinophilic cystitis through clinical manifestations and imaging findings. However, no suspicious malignant lesions were observed on cystoscopy and liver mass biopsy revealed the presence of eosinophilic necrotizing granuloma without malignant c…

A 28-year-old lady presented with recurrent erythematous skin lesions in different parts of the body for 3 months. There were several episodes of worm coming out of the lesions. Examination of the worms in the parasitology laboratory revealed it to be a larva of Gnathostoma sp. She was advised treatment with Albendazole for 21 days, and there was no recurrence of lesions.

Dogs and cats are hosts to hookworms that may cause zoonotic disease, most notably, cutaneous larva migrans. Ancylostoma braziliense is most often implicated in dermatological lesions, and Ancylostoma caninum has been associated with eosinophilic enteritis and suggested as a possible cause of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis in humans. Other manifestations include eosinophilic pneumonitis, localized myositis, folliculitis, erythema multiforme, or ophthalmological manifestations. Ancylostoma eggs are morphologically indistinguishable, which complicates epidemiological studies. Surveys…
