Anti-Trichomonas gallinae activity of essential oils and main compounds from Lamiaceae and Asteraceae plants.

Trichomonas gallinae is a flagellated protozoan that parasitizes the upper digestive tract of various bird species and causes avian trichomonosis. The emergence of resistant strains to the standard treatment, based on nitroimidazoles, increases the need to find alternative therapies. In this study, 36 essential oils (EOs) from Lamiaceae and Asteraceae plant families were tested against T. gallinae trophozoites using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-)-2,5-dipheniltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction assay. Among them, EOs from distinct species of Lamiaceae, including the genera Lavandula, Salvia,

Mediterranean Shrub Species as a Source of Biomolecules against Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases are associated with oxidative stress, due to an imbalance in the oxidation-reduction reactions at the cellular level. Various treatments are available to treat these diseases, although they often do not cure them and have many adverse effects. Therefore, it is necessary to find complementary and/or alternative drugs that replace current treatments with fewer side effects. It has been demonstrated that natural products derived from plants, specifically phenolic compounds, have a great capacity to suppress oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals thus, they may be

Enhancing blood donor skin disinfection using natural oils.

BACKGROUND: Effective donor skin disinfection is essential in preventing bacterial contamination of blood components with skin flora bacteria like Staphylococcus epidermidis. Cell aggregates of S. epidermidis (biofilms) are found on the skin and are resistant to the commonly used donor skin disinfectants chlorhexidine-gluconate and isopropyl alcohol. It has been demonstrated that essential oils synergistically enhance the antibacterial activity of chlorhexidine-gluconate. The objective of this study was to test plant-extracted essential oils in combination with chlorhexidine-gluconate or chlor

Anti-inflammatory effects of lavender and eucalyptus essential oils on the in vitro cell culture model of bladder pain syndrome using T24 cells.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) has a chronic chemical irritation and inflammation of non-bacterial origin in the bladder wall leading to various severe symptoms. There is evidence that chronic inflammation is significantly associated with abnormal urothelial barrier function, epithelial dysfunction. This is the underlying cause of urothelial apoptosis and sterile inflammation. METHOD: The anti-inflammatory effects of lavender and eucalyptus essential oils (EOs) and their main components (linalool and eucalyptol) were investigated in the T24 human bladder epithelial cell line on TNFα s

Lavender oil-potent anxiolytic properties via modulating voltage dependent calcium channels.

Recent clinical data support the clinical use of oral lavender oil in patients suffering from subsyndromal anxiety. We identified the molecular mechanism of action that will alter the perception of lavender oil as a nonspecific ingredient of aromatherapy to a potent anxiolytic inhibiting voltage dependent calcium channels (VOCCs) as highly selective drug target. In contrast to previous publications where exorbitant high concentrations were used, the effects of lavender oil in behavioral, biochemical, and electrophysiological experiments were investigated in physiological concentrations in the

Effects of lavender essential oil inhalation on sleep quality and fatigue in patients with chronic heart failure: a randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: Heart failure (HF) is a complex syndrome marked by the heart's insufficient pumping ability, and it is frequently complicated by prevalent sleep problems such as initiating and maintaining sleep. Aromatherapy via inhalation is a safe, non-pharmacological therapy that may improve sleep. Lavender oil, a type of essential oil, is reputed for its calming and sedative properties, but evidence of its effectiveness in patients with chronic HF remains limited. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of lavender essential oil inhalation in improving sleep quality and reducing fatigue l

Lavender.

Lavender is a commonly used product in personal and household care items as well as for aromatherapy. It is increasing in popularity as a fragrance. Additionally, multiple recent publications attest to its antimicrobial activity. Whereas lavender has been associated with irritant dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and photodermatitis, it is anticipated that with increasing exposure, more patients will experience these complications. Most cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been reported as being due to occupational exposures through massage and aromatherapy. One study of the Japane

Results of patch testing with lavender oil in Japan.

We report the annual results of patch testing with lavender oil for a 9-year period from 1990 to 1998 in Japan. Using Finn Chambers and Scanpor tape, we performed 2-day closed patch testing with lavender oil 20% pet. on the upper back of each patient suspected of having cosmetic contact dermatitis. We compared the frequency of positive patch tests to lavender oil each year with those to other fragrances. We diagnosed contact allergy when patch test reactions were + or <+ at 1 day after removal. The positivity rate of lavender oil was 3.7% (0-13.9%) during the 9-year period from 1990 to 1998. T
