Impact of a pediatric asthma clinical pathway on hospital cost and length of stay.

This study sought to determine if a clinical pathway developed and executed by specialists in pediatric asthma would reduce hospital costs and length of stay (LOS). The study design was a retrospective, nonrandomized, controlled trial. Subjects were children aged 2-18 years (N = 1,004) with a history of recurrent wheezing, hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute asthma exacerbation between 1995-1998 at the New York Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center and treated via the pathway, as well as a control group of 206 children ages 2-18 hospitalized for acute asthma exacerbation in 1994, the year p

Predictors of Prolonged Hospital Length of Stay in Patients With Odontogenic Infections in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Poor outcomes of odontogenic infections usually increase the length of stay (LOS) in hospitals, and the cost of treatment increases substantially. The LOS of patients with odontogenic infections is not set in stone. In clinical practice, it is observed that cost, certain medications and treatments, age and a plethora of factors influence this. However, it is unclear which factors have direct effects on it. As such, evidence-based interventions become difficult. METHODOLOGY: The study utilised a retrospective observational approach and a total population sampling technique to inves

Influencing factors for fragility fractures of the pelvis on length of stay and complication rate.

PURPOSE: Increasing incidence of fragility pelvic ring fractures (FFP) is driven by demographic. An analysis of the patient population, along with the factors influencing total length of stay (LoS), and endpoints such as complications is essential for a better understanding and treatment of FFP injuries. METHODS: This retrospective data analysis includes all inpatients treated from January 2018 to December 2022, with an FFP. Excluded were patients < 65 years, high-energy trauma, acetabular fractures, or pathological fractures. Collected data included demographics as well as information about

The Volume of Thoracic Irrigation Is Associated With Length of Stay in Patients With Traumatic Hemothorax.

INTRODUCTION: Irrigation of the thoracic cavity at tube thoracostomy (TT) placement may decrease the rate of a retained hemothorax (RHTX); however, other resource utilization outcomes have not yet been quantified. This study evaluated the association of thoracic irrigation during TT with the length of stay and outcomes in patients with traumatic hemothorax (HTX). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of adult patients receiving a TT for HTX at a single, urban Level 1 Trauma Center from January 2019 to December 2020. Those who underwent irrigation during TT at the discretion of t

The effect of anaemia on hospital length of stay in lumbar decompression and fusion procedures.

Ways of reducing the length of hospital stay have received increased attention in recent years. Both preoperative and postoperative anaemia have been implicated as causative agents in increasing postoperative length of stay (LOS). In a retrospective study, 317 patients that underwent lumbar decompression and fusion surgery were assessed. Two separate block multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of preoperative anaemia, postoperative anaemia, and the degree of perioperative haemoglobin drop on LOS. Other anaemia related factors were also assessed. Preopera

The impact of morbid obesity on hospital length of stay in kidney transplant recipients.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is often associated with higher hospital costs because of longer length of stay (LOS) but this has not been well studied in the kidney transplant population. Therefore, we used national data to compare LOS in select groups of morbidly obese and normal weight recipients after kidney transplant. DESIGN: This study was a retrospective analysis of the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing database. SUBJECTS: The study sample consisted of 42,787 morbidly obese (body mass index 35-40 kg/m(2)) and normal weight (body mass index 18.5-24.9 kg/m(

Predictors of length of stay in forensic psychiatry: the influence of perceived risk of violence.

This study describes the prevalence of adverse events and length of stay in forensic psychiatric patients with and without a restriction order. Detailed clinical and administrative information from medical records and written court decisions was gathered retrospectively from admission until discharge for a Swedish population-based, consecutive cohort of forensic psychiatric patients (n=125). The median length of stay for the whole cohort was 951 days, but patients with a restriction order stayed in hospital almost five times as long as patients without. Restriction orders were related to convi
