Gut microbiota profiles and potential biomarkers in pre-pubertal females with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder with significant sex differences in diagnostic rates; males being diagnosed more frequently than females. Gut microbiota alterations may contribute to ADHD via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. However, previous microbiota studies have predominantly used male or mixed-gender samples, neglecting females with distinct clinical and hormonal profiles. The pre-pubertal period is critical for both neurodevelopment and microbiota maturation. This study investigates gut microbiota characteristics

Effectiveness of mass spectrometry and genomic analysis in the surveillance of nontuberculous Mycobacterium in Taiwan.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are diverse, and species-level identification remains challenging in routine diagnostics. We analyzed NTM isolates collected at three regional centers of the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) from 2019 to 2024 to assess geographic variation and identification performance after implementation of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Among 3,188 cases meeting the microbiological criteria for probable pulmonary NTM disease, the species distribution differed by region: Mycobacterium avium complex pred

Two complete 1918 influenza A/H1N1 pandemic virus genomes characterized by next-generation sequencing using RNA isolated from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded autopsy lung tissue samples along with evidence of secondary bacterial co-infection.

UNLABELLED: The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most devastating respiratory pandemic in modern human history, with 50-100 million deaths worldwide. Here, we characterized the complete genomes of influenza A virus (IAV) from two fatal cases during the fall wave of 1918 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the United States, one from Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, and the other from Camp Jackson, SC. The two complete IAV genomes were obtained by combining Illumina deep sequencing data from both total RNA and influenza viral genome-enriched libraries along with Sanger sequencing data fro

Melioidosis: Burkholderia pseudomallei technical challenges in identification and susceptibility testing in a non-endemic area.

We report the isolation Burkholderia pseudomallei from a 69-year-old of Thai descent who presented in our hospital in central Sydney, Ausralia. This case highlights the technical challenges of identifying melioidosis in a non-endemic region. In our case confirming the diagnosis of melioidosis was difficult due to the misreporting of this isolate with a MALDI-TOF high score as B. thailandensis by MALDI-TOF-MS without the proper laboratory Maldi-Biotyper Security-Relevant library database software. The initial diagnosis of melioidosis was founded on suspicion from the clinical microbiologists ba

An autopathography of tic douloureux at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

An Italian lawyer who suffered from tic douloureux wrote an autopathography of his disease documenting a 2-decade history of essential trigeminal neuralgia. The diary reveals a medical history from onset until 1823 when this man was admitted to the Arcispedale Sant'Anna in Ferrara. The documentation was recently discovered in the library of the hospital where it was probably placed when the patient died in 1824. Mr. Ruggiero Ragazzi was a man of notable culture who described the course of his disease and the most accredited treatments of that age. Famous Italian physicians examined and treated

Feasibility of video-based joint hypermobility assessment in individuals with suspected Ehlers-Danlos syndromes/generalised hypermobility spectrum disorders: a single-site observational study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS)/generalised hypermobility spectrum disorders (G-HSD) affect the connective tissue of the body and present with a heterogeneous set of symptoms that pose a challenge for diagnosis. One of the main diagnostic criteria of EDS/G-HSD is generalised joint hypermobility, which is currently assessed by clinicians during a physical exam. However, the practice for measuring joint hypermobility is inconsistent between clinicians, leading to high inter-rater variability. Often patients are misdiagnosed with EDS/G-HSD based on an incorrect hypermobility assessmen

[Thoracic ultrasound: the pneumologist's new stethoscope].

We now have access to a large library of publications validating transparietal thoracic echography in various clinical situations. Parietal lesions, including osteolysis, can be detected and biopsied during the thoracic ultrasound (TUS) examination. To evaluate the parietal extension of lung cancers, TUS has proved superior to tomodensitometry. Pleural effusions can be easily diagnosed and aspirated. Pneumothoraces can be detected using well defined lung artifacts with a high frequency probe. Pleural and peripheral lung nodules can be detected and biopsied with real time visualization; the pro

Genome-wide identification of Acinetobacter baumannii genes necessary for persistence in the lung.

UNLABELLED: Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes diseases such as pneumonia, bacteremia, and soft tissue infections in hospitalized patients. Relatively little is known about how A. baumannii causes these infections. Thus, we used insertion sequencing (INSeq), a combination of transposon mutagenesis and massively parallel next-generation sequencing, to identify novel virulence factors of A. baumannii. To this end, we generated a random transposon mutant library containing 150,000 unique insertions in A. baumannii strain ATCC 17978. The INSeq analysis identified 453
