Epilepsy and hormonal regulation: the patterns of GnRH and galanin immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus of epileptic female rats.

Endocrine and reproductive alterations are frequently reported to occur in women with temporal lobe epilepsy as well as in female rats in different experimental models of limbic seizures. We have recently observed that rats with structural damage of limbic structures induced by sustained convulsions triggered by systemic administration of pilocarpine develop spontaneous seizures after a mean latency of 15 days. In order to investigate the possible substrate of endocrine alterations in epilepsy, changes of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and the neuropeptide galanin (GAL) were studied

The Zürich amygdalo-hippocampectomy series: a short up-date.

Selective amygdalohippocampectomy was developed as a surgical treatment for temporal lobe epilesy with a well-defined unilateral mesiobasal limbic seizure onset. Since 1975, 236 patients have been operated on in Zürich. We briefly summarize recent studies on the seizure outcome with analysis of the postoperative long-term fluctuations in relation to postoperative anticonvulsant drug treatment, on the underlying neuropathology, and on the relationships between magnetic resonance scanning estimates of total volume of the removed tissue and the resection scores of amygdala, hippocampus and parahi

A generalizable data-driven model of atrophy heterogeneity and progression in memory clinic settings.

Memory clinic patients are a heterogeneous population representing various aetiologies of pathological ageing. It is not known whether divergent spatiotemporal progression patterns of brain atrophy, as previously described in Alzheimer's disease patients, are prevalent and clinically meaningful in this group of older adults. To uncover distinct atrophy subtypes, we applied the Subtype and Stage Inference (SuStaIn) algorithm to baseline structural MRI data from 813 participants enrolled in the DELCODE cohort (mean ± standard deviation, age = 70.67 ± 6.07 years, 52% females). Participants were c

Neuroanatomy of dyslexia: An allometric approach.

Despite evidence for a difference in total brain volume between dyslexic and good readers, no previous neuroimaging study examined differences in allometric scaling (i.e. differences in the relationship between regional and total brain volumes) between dyslexic and good readers. The present study aims to fill this gap by testing differences in allometric scaling and regional brain volume differences in dyslexic and good readers. Object-based morphometry analysis was used to determine grey and white matter volumes of the four lobes, the cerebellum and limbic structures in 130 dyslexic and 106 g

Sanger Brown and Edward Schäfer before Heinrich Klüver and Paul Bucy: their observations on bilateral temporal lobe ablations.

Fifty years before a report on the complete bitemporal lobectomy syndrome in primates, known as the Klüver-Bucy syndrome, was published, 2 talented investigators working at the University College in London, England-neurologist Sanger Brown and physiologist Edward Schäfer-also made this discovery. The title of their work was "An investigation into the functions of the occipital and temporal lobes of the monkey's brain," and it involved excisional brain surgery in 12 monkeys. They were particularly interested in the then-disputed primary cortical locations relating to vision and hearing. However

Cocaine Destroys Gray Matter Brain Cells and Accelerates Brain Aging.

Introduction: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a substance use disorder characterized by a strong desire to obtain, consume, and misuse cocaine. Little is known about how cocaine affects the structure of the brain. In this study, we first investigated the anatomical brain changes in individuals with CUD compared to their matched healthy controls, and then explored whether these anatomical brain abnormalities contribute to considerably accelerated brain aging among this population. Methods: At the first stage, we used anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, voxel-based morphometry (VBM),

A Comparative Study of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow Asymmetry Index in Stroke Patients with or without Poststroke Depression Using 99m Tc-ECD Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography.

Introduction  Stroke is a major cause of death and disability around the globe. The development of depression following a stroke further increases the disability and impairs functional recovery. In recent decades, despite the advancement in structural and nuclear medicine imaging, the pathophysiologic basis of poststroke depression (PSD) is not well understood. Etiopathogenesis of PSD is multifactorial and afflictions of the frontal lobe, hippocampus, limbic region, and basal ganglia projections are implicated. Aim  The aim of this study was to assess the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) us

Altered cortical thickness and emotional dysregulation in adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

Background: Emotional dysregulation is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Previous studies have reported that abnormal grey matter volume is associated with the limbic-cortical circuit and default mode network (DMN) in patients with BPD. However, alterations of cortical thickness in adolescents with BPD have not been well evaluated. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess cortical thickness and its association with emotional dysregulation in adolescents with BPD.Method: This prospective study enrolled 52 adolescents with BPD and 39 age- and sex-matched healthy contr

Early involvement of small inhibitory cortical interneurons in Alzheimer's disease.

Work on acute models of cortical injury has revealed a population of small GABAergic interneurons that are induced to increase their low constitutive expression of neuronal nitric oxide (NO) synthase (nNOS). In some cases, this activation may play a role in NO-mediated degeneration of pyramidal neurons. In this report, we explore the anatomy of various classes of cortical nNOS (+) (nitrergic) neurons, with emphasis on small interneurons, in the medial temporal lobe of subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD) from two well-characterized cohorts, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA) an

Diaschisis in the human brain reveals specificity of cerebrocerebellar connections.

Anatomical studies in animals and imaging studies in humans show that cerebral sensorimotor areas map onto corresponding cerebellar sensorimotor areas and that cerebral association areas map onto cerebellar posterior lobe regions designated as the representation of the association (cognitive and limbic) cerebellum. We report a patient with unilateral left hemispheric status epilepticus, whose brain MRI revealed diffuse unihemispheric cerebral cortical FLAIR and diffusion signal hyperintensity but spared primary motor, somatosensory, visual, and to lesser extent auditory cerebral cortices. Nonlinear Dynamic Complexity and Sources of Resting-state EEG in Abstinent Heroin Addicts.

It has been reported that chronic heroin intake induces both structural and functional changes in human brain; however, few studies have investigated the carry-over adverse effects on brain after heroin withdrawal. In this paper, we examined the neurophysiological differences between the abstinent heroin addicts (AHAs) and healthy controls (HCs) using nonlinear dynamic analysis and source localization analysis in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data; 5 min resting EEG data from 20 AHAs and twenty age-, education-, and gender-matched HCs were recorded using 64 electrodes. The role of posterior parietal cortex in detecting changes in feedback contingency.

Well-practiced or learned behaviors are extremely resilient. For example, it is extremely difficult for a trained typist to forget how to use a keyboard configuration that they are familiar with. While they can be trained on a new keyboard configuration, the original skill quickly comes back when the old keyboard configuration is used again. This resiliency of learned skills is both a blessing and a curse. It makes useful skills durable, but it also makes maladaptive behaviors difficult to extinguish. Crossley et al. (2013) proposed a computational model and behavioral paradigm aimed at unlear

[Psychosurgical treatment of malignant OCD: three case-reports].

Surgery can be proposed for some patients affected by psychiatric diseases such as severe, disabling and refractory affective disorders (depression), OCD and chronic anxiety states. It can be performed after a period of evolution of minimum 5 Years and after all other classical treatments have failed. For the last Years, different stereotactic techniques have been used: capsulotomy, cingulotomy, subcaudate tractotomy and limbic leukotomy, performed by radiofrequency thermolesions or radiosurgery (g rays). In the case of OCD, these procedures are supposed to affect some of the neural circuits b

A cholinergic explanation of dense amnesia.

Traditionally, dense amnesia in humans has been thought to be caused by damage to memory structures within the medial temporal lobe, either the hippocampus, the perirhinal cortex or a combination of the two. Recent work in animals has indicated that damage to the hippocampus results in memory impairments that are specific to memories for events. In contrast, damage to the perirhinal cortex impairs object memories in primates, which are likely to be analogous to human semantic memory. Discrete damage to either of these structures does not appear to result in severe and global memory impairments

Feline temporal lobe epilepsy: seven cases of hippocampal and piriform lobe necrosis in England and literature review.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Seven cases of feline hippocampal and piriform lobe necrosis (FHN) are described, with particular emphasis on clinical, radiographic and histopathological correlations. FHN is an uncommon acute epileptic condition resembling human autoimmune limbic encephalitis and temporal lobe epilepsy. Seizures are typically focal and feature uni- or bilateral orofacial or head twitching, hypersalivation, lip smacking, mydriasis, vocalisation and motionless staring, with inter-ictal behavioural changes such as unprovoked aggression and rapid running. Emerging evidence supports an autoim

Ligand-gated mechanisms leading to ictogenesis in focal epileptic disorders.

We review here the neuronal mechanisms that cause seizures in focal epileptic disorders and, specifically, those involving limbic structures that are known to be implicated in human mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In both epileptic patients and animal models, the initiation of focal seizures - which are most often characterized by a low-voltage fast onset EEG pattern - is presumably dependent on the synchronous firing of GABA-releasing interneurons that, by activating post-synaptic GABAA receptors, cause large increases in extracellular [K+] through the activation of the co-transporter KCC2. Beta-endorphin in brain limbic structures as neurochemical correlate of psychic dependence on drugs.

The significance of beta-endorphin for drug dependence was explored by measuring the levels of beta-endorphin-immunoreactivity (beta E-IR) in plasma and parts of pituitary and brain of rats self-administering heroin or cocaine as compared to animals offered saline. Rats that had intravenously self-administrated heroin for 5 consecutive daily sessions of 6 h, and were decapitated immediately after the last session, showed a decreased concentration of beta E-IR in the anterior lobe (AL) of the pituitary while rats that had taken cocaine showed a decreased concentration of beta E-IR in the septum

Forensic significance of the limbic psychotic trigger reaction.

During the "decade of the brain," competent expert testimony should encompass widely neglected, even novel, neurophysiologically plausible explanations for otherwise unexplainable acts. In the case presented here, a sudden, out-of-character, motiveless, unplanned homicidal attack was committed by a patient who demonstrated flat affect, preserved consciousness, and memory of the episode. Transient autonomic hyperactivation and psychosis were suddenly experienced when the victim happened to move his mouth while eating. Following a sudden memory revival of repetitive but moderate bodily stresses,

Electrophysiological Evidence for Anti-epileptic Property of Taurine.

Taurine, 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is one of the most abundant free amino acids especially in excitable tissues, with wide physiological actions. Several lines of evidence suggest that taurine may function as a potent inhibitory neuromodulator that regulate neuronal activity in many cerebral areas. Parenteral injection of kainic acid (KA), a glutamate receptor agonist, causes severe and stereotyped behavioral convulsions in mice and is used as a rodent model for human temporal lobe epilepsy. In the adult brain, inhibitory GABAergic interneurons modulate the activity of principal excitatory c

[Surgical and pathological study of the approach to the superior choroid plexus of the 3 rd ventricle. One case of posterior choroid arteriovenous aneurysm (author's transl)].

The authors describe a case of an arterio venous malformation of the tela choroidea of the third ventricle which was feeding by the postero medial choroidal artery and draining by the internal cerebral vein. This A-V malformation was microsurgically excluded in sitting position by an occipital interhemispheric, transtentorial and transversal transcallosal approach without any postsurgical clinical signs. An anatomical study of this region shows an easy recognition of the choroidal postero medial artery by the regular presence of an arterial loop which concavity is crossed by the terminal segme
