Dementia, one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, affects millions worldwide. Understanding linguistic markers of dementia is crucial for elucidating how cognitive decline manifests in speech patterns. Current non-invasive assessments like the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) tests rely on manual interpretation and often lack detailed linguistic insight. This paper introduces a first-of-its-kind interpretable artificial intelligence (IAI) framework, CharMark, which leverages first-order Markov Chain models to characterize langu

PURPOSE: Despite the considerable scientific interest in researching the reading skills of the deaf population, most of these studies focus on reading comprehension (RC) at the word or sentence level. Such reading activates different underlying language processes than text-level reading, which is more akin to real-life reading literacy. The results of 36 studies on different linguistic skills and their correlation/prediction with text RC of deaf readers are reviewed, taking into account age and two language modalities (spoken language [SpL] and sign language [SL]).
METHOD: The studies were sy

The Caregiver Skills Training (CST) was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve access to evidence-based services for children with developmental concerns from low-income backgrounds. While the CST program has undergone four significant revisions to increase feasibility of implementation and has been adapted and implemented in more than 30 countries, currently the Spanish version is outdated and has never been implemented in the U.S. This study aimed to culturally and linguistically adapt the Spanish-version of the CST for a predominantly Spanish-speaking Latino-populated r

The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of various forms of verbal sexual abuse among students in higher education. Specifically, the study seeks to explore the linguistic features and types of utterances used in verbal sexual abuse and to examine how male and female students perceive such abuse. A mixed-methods design was employed, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative component involved the use of discourse analysis to analyze texts, pictures, and symbols containing instances of verbal sexual abuse. Meanwhile, the quantitative component empl

This article investigates the multiple interpretations and uses of banter as an inclusive and exclusionary practice amongst competitive youth swimmers in the Southeast of England. As a metacommunicative act, banter is a form of linguistic play that focuses on the ways in which the words are delivered, and the social relationships involved between those engaged in banter. Through an immersive "apprenticeship" within a competitive swimming club from 2018 to 2022, I was party to particular forms of English "humorous" communication and invitations to join in banter with coaches and swimmers. As co

Curiosity is a core driver for life-long learning, problem-solving and decision-making. In a broad sense, curiosity is defined as the intrinsically motivated acquisition of novel information. Despite a decades-long history of curiosity research and the earliest human theories arising from studies of laboratory rodents, curiosity has mainly been considered in two camps: 'linguistic human' and 'other'. This is despite psychology being heritable, and there are many continuities in cognitive capacities across the animal kingdom. Boundary-pushing cross-disciplinary debates on curiosity are lacking,

BACKGROUND: It is often considered appropriate to assess vocal fatigue using a self-reported tool or a subjective measure, as vocal fatigue is primarily described through self-reported symptoms. The vocal fatigue handicap questionnaire (VFHQ) is a self-rated questionnaire that addresses the concern of vocal fatigue in persons with voice disorders. Adapting and validating this questionnaire into the Kannada language can be helpful in assessing the physical, emotional, and functional effects of vocal fatigue among Kannada-speaking individuals.
OBJECTIVE: Adaptation and Validation of the VFHQ in

PURPOSE: Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often have persistent cognitive-linguistic deficits that negatively influence their life. Our objective was to examine the cognitive-linguistic outcome in individuals with moderate to severe diffuse axonal injury (DAI) with a novel test battery. As fatigue is a common symptom affecting the lives of individuals with DAI, we also wanted to assess whether the self-reported fatigue was associated with cognitive-linguistic abilities.
METHODS: Selected cognitive-linguistic subtests of the Finnish KAT test and The Mental Fatigue Scale (MFS) were

Many patients with cleft palate in developing countries never receive postoperative speech assessment or therapy. The use of audiovisual recordings could improve access to post-repair speech care. The present study evaluated whether English-speaking speech-language pathologists (SLPs) could assess cleft palate patients speaking an unfamiliar language (Tamil) using recorded media. Recordings obtained from Tamil-speaking participants were rated by 1 Tamil-speaking SLP and 3 English-speaking SLPs. Ratings were analyzed for inter-rater reliability and scored for percent correct. Thalamic stroke may result in cognitive and linguistic problems, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Especially, it is still a matter of debate why thalamic aphasia occasionally occurs and then mostly recovers to some degree. We begin with a brief overview of the cognitive dysfunction and aphasia, and then review previous hypotheses of the underlying mechanism. We introduced a unique characteristic of relatively transient "word retrieval difficulty" of patients in acute phase of thalamic stroke. Word retrieval ability involves both executive function and speech production. Furthermor

William Rutherford Sanders spent a childhood and early student days divided between Edinburgh and Montpelier, France before graduating in Medicine in Edinburgh. An early interest in the spleen was encouraged by a two-year period in Europe where he became familiar with the work of Helmholtz, Bernard and Henle. Returning to Edinburgh, his growing experience led to the position of assistant in the Infirmary pathology department. He conducted classes in the University of Edinburgh and on behalf of the Royal Colleges became familiar with the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons where he was chos

Though accumulating evidence indicates that the striatum is recruited during language processing, the specific function of this subcortical structure in language remains to be elucidated. To answer this question, we used Huntington's disease as a model of striatal lesion. We investigated the morphological deficit of 30 early Huntington's disease patients with a novel linguistic task that can be modeled within an explicit theory of linguistic computation. Behavioral results reflected an impairment in HD patients on the linguistic task. Computational model-based analysis compared the behavioral

We assessed the linguistic abilities of multi-infarct (cortical) dementia and subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (VaD) patients and compared the linguistic performance of VaD and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients. A total of 23 VaD patients, 20 mild AD patients, and 31 controls participated in the study. All were evaluated using the Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia (ABCD). Neuropsychological testing was performed to ascertain that VaD and AD patients had comparable cognitive performance. Both dementia groups performed more poorly than controls in the ABCD measures, e

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is a serious consequence of stroke but aphasics patients have been routinely excluded from participation in some areas of stroke research.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of specific linguistic and non-verbal cognitive abilities on the short-term motor recovery of patients with aphasia due to first-ever stroke to the left hemisphere after an intensive rehabilitation treatment.
METHODS: 48 post-acute aphasic patients, who underwent physiotherapy and speech language therapy, were enrolled for this retrospective cohort-study. Four types of possible predictive factors were take

BACKGROUND: Efficacy studies have demonstrated the benefit of group conversation therapy for a person with aphasia (PWA). However, a PWA typically participates in individual therapy prior to group therapy. Stimulation therapy (ST) is the most common type of individual aphasia therapy. Ultimately, the outcome of therapy is to enable the PWA to communicate effectively with others, which suggests the need for conversation therapy (CT). Little efficacy data exist to demonstrate the benefit of CT between a PWA and a clinician, in part because no clear treatment outcome measures have been establishe

"Dystypia", characterized by an impairment of typing on a keyboard, is a unique neurobehavioral syndrome. A 77-year-old right-handed woman developed a relatively selective impairment of typing after ischemic stroke. The MRI documented new scattered ischemic lesions in the middle cerebral artery territory of the left hemisphere and an old infarct lesion in the frontal area of the right hemisphere. The standard neuropsychological tests showed no aphasia, normal praxis, intact visuospatial ability, and a mild visual memory disturbance. The detailed analysis documented severe impairment of writing
