Effects of plant oils with different fatty acid composition on cardiovascular risk factors in moderately hypercholesteremic Chinese adults: a randomized, double-blinded, parallel-designed trial.

OBJECTIVES: Plant oil for cooking typically provides 40% to 50% of dietary fat, 65% of linoleic acid, 44% of α-linolenic acid and 41% of oleic acid in the Chinese diet. However, the comparative effects of fatty acids derived from plant oil on cardiovascular risk factors in Chinese are still inconclusive. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate whether cardiovascular risk factors are altered depending on various types of plant oils such as peanut oil rich in oleic acid, corn oil rich in linoleic acid, and blend oil fortified by α-linolenic acid. DESIGN: A randomized, double-blinded, par

[Essential fatty acids in parenteral nutrition].

Fat is a very important nutrient in that it supplies energy, essential fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins. The importance of n-6 essential fatty acids, i.e., linoleic and arachidonic acid, in total parenteral nutrition was demonstrated in the last 15 years by several cases of essential fatty acid deficiency. In addition, n-3 fatty acids, i.e., alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, are essential nutrients in forming an independent family of eicosanoids with biological effects different from those of the n-6 fatty acids. The requirement of different essential fa

Fats, lipids and blood coagulation.

Saturated and n-3 fatty acids, postprandial lipaemia, and the combined effects of fatty acids and lipid-lowering drugs have been of principal interest in recent studies in the field of dietary fats, lipids and haemostasis. The sex-specific effect of individual saturated fatty acids on coagulation factor VII activity has been discovered, and the significant effect of factor VII R353Q polymorphism on the postprandial response has also been found. An increased intake of n-3 fatty acids or fat reduction when combined with intensive lifestyle interventions may lead to reduced thrombotic potential i

[Effect of combination therapy of clofibric acid and nicotinic acid derivatives on fatty acid metabolism in hyperlipoproteinemia].

71 patients (42 males and 29 females at the age of 45-76 years) with primary hyperlipoproteinaemia were treated with clofibrin acid and derivatives of nicotinic acid during 3 years. Gas-chromatographic analyses of the composition of fatty acids of their serum cholesterol ester and triglyceride fractions showed an increase of linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic, eicosapentaenic acid as well as a decrease of palmitinic, palmitoleinic, stearic, oleic and eicosatrienic acid under treatment. The changes were more efficient than under monotherapy. Selective competitive inhibition of unesterified fatty

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in children with severe protein-energy malnutrition with and without human immunodeficiency virus-1 infection.

Fatty acids in plasma phospholipids were studied in 35 severely malnourished young children with a median age of 29 mo (range: 9-43 mo), who were either seronegative for human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV) (n = 16) or suffered from asymptomatic (stage P-1; n = 12) or symptomatic (stage P-2; n = 7) HIV disease. The malnourished children had significantly lower percentages (% by wt) of phospholipid arachidonic (20:4n-6, AA) and docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3, DHA) acids than 25 age-matched healthy control subjects (AA: 7.05% and 8.70% by wt; DHA: 0.92 and 2.61% by wt, P < 0.001). Regioisomeric structure determination of alpha- and gamma-linolenoyldilinoleoylglycerol in blackcurrant seed oil by silver ion high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Gamma-linolenic acid (Gla) and oils containing Gla have evident positive effects on a variety of disorders, and therefore, the structure of triacylglycerols (TAGs) containing Gla is of special interest. The regioisomeric structures of TAGs 18:3(n-3)/18:2/18:2 (Ala/L/L) and 18:3(n-6)/18:2/18:2 (Gla/L/L) in blackcurrant seed oil were determined by Ag-HPLC/APCI-MS and Ag-HPLC/ESI-MS/MS techniques. In the latter, silver ion adducts were prepared by adding silver nitrate to the postcolumn flow. Correlation between immune-related Tryptophan-Kynurenine pathway and severity of severe pneumonia and inflammation-related polyunsaturated fatty acids.

BACKGROUND: Immune dysfunction and oxidative stress caused by severe pneumonia can lead to multiple organ dysfunction and even death, causing a significant impact on health and the economy. Currently, great progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, but the mortality rate remains high (approximately 50%). Therefore, there is still potential for further exploration of the immune response mechanisms against severe pneumonia. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the difference in serum metabolic profiles between patients with severe pneumonia and health individuals through

Differential effect of walnut oil and safflower oil on the serum cholesterol level and lesion area in the aortic root of apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Walnut oil (WO) is a good source of alpha-linolenic acid. We compared the effects of WO and high-linoleic safflower oil (HLSO) on the serum lipid level and atherosclerosis development in male and female apolipoprotein (apo) E-deficient mice. The WO diet resulted in a higher level of serum cholesterol than with HLSO. Female mice fed on the WO diet had a greater lesion area in the aortic root than did those on the HLSO diet. There was no diet-dependent difference in the level of cholesterol and its oxidation products in the abdominal and thoracic aorta. These results suggest that the unpleasant

The octadecanoid signalling pathway in plants mediates a response to ultraviolet radiation.

Many plant genes that respond to environmental and developmental changes are regulated by jasmonic acid, which is derived from linolenic acid via the octadecanoid pathway. Linolenic acid is an important fatty-acid constituent of membranes in most plant species and its intracellular levels increase in response to certain signals. Here we report that irradiation of tomato leaves with ultraviolet light induces the expression of several plant defensive genes that are normally activated through the octadecanoid pathway after wounding. The response to ultraviolet light is blocked by an inhibitor of

Fortifying Butterfat with Soybean Oil Attenuates the Onset of Diet-Induced Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis and Glucose Intolerance.

The addition of plant oils such as soybean oil (S) to a diet rich in saturated fatty acids is discussed as a possible route to prevent or diminish the development of metabolic disease. Here, we assessed whether a butterfat-rich diet fortified with S affects the development of early non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and glucose intolerance. Female C57BL/6J mice were fed a standard-control diet (C); a fat-, fructose-, and cholesterol-rich diet (FFC, 25E% butterfat, 50% (wt./wt.) fructose, 0.16% (wt./wt.) cholesterol); or FFC supplemented with S (FFC + S, 21E% butterfat + 4E% S) for 13 weeks.

The fats of life: the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention of coronary heart disease.

Epidemiological and clinical trial evidence suggests that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) might have a significant role in the prevention of coronary heart disease. Dietary sources of omega-3 PUFA include fish oils rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid along with plants rich in alpha-linolenic acid. Randomized clinical trials with fish oils (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) and alpha-linolenic acid have demonstrated reductions in risk that compare favorably with those seen in landmark secondary prevention trials with lipid-lowering drugs. Several mec

Serum lipid and plasma fatty acid profiles in PTSD patients and healthy individuals: Associations with symptoms, cognitive function, and inflammatory markers.

Increasing evidence suggests that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious mental health condition, is associated with physical health problems. Lipid-related molecules are crucial for central nervous system functions associated with PTSD symptoms; however, case-control studies exploring the relationship between PTSD and lipid-related molecules are scarce. We examined 68 civilian PTSD patients and 97 healthy controls, evaluating PTSD symptoms, childhood maltreatment history, suicidality, and cognitive functions. Cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammation-related marker levels were ana

Oral Intake of Linseed Oil Inhibits Skin Barrier Dysfunction in Obese Mice.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is not only a risk factor for lifestyle-related diseases but also causes skin barrier dysfunction, which leads to a reduced quality of life due to dryness, itching, and scratching, and thus requires appropriate treatment. However, there are no studies on this issue. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether oral intake of linseed oil is effective for skin barrier function in obesity and to confirm how the effect is demonstrated. METHODS: TSOD mice received either sterile distilled water (Control group) or linseed oil (Omega group), containing a high level of omega-3 fa

Unsaturated fatty acid-associated lipid oxidation contributes to browning and flavor formation in high-temperature Daqu.

High-temperature Daqu (HTD) shows distinct browning intensities during fermentation, accompanied by differences in flavor quality. Unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) as important precursors and reactive substrates in fermentation systems, may play a critical role in this process. In this study, UFAs profiles of HTD with different browning intensities were comparatively analyzed, alongside their physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbiota. Our results revealed significant divergence in UFAs contents during fermentation, with linoleic acid and linolenic acid identified as key discr
