Retroperitoneal liposarcoma in two siblings.

We report here on two cases of retroperitoneal liposarcoma which heterochronously occurred in two siblings. A huge myxoid liposarcoma, 20 x 14 cm size, was noticed in a 33-year-old female, who died with multiple liver metastasis in about half a year. Two years later after the death of the younger sister, pleomorphic liposarcoma, 8 x 8 cm in size, was noticed in a 39-year-old male who died with local recurrence and multiple metastasis one year after the operation. Their mother (69 years old) had had an operation for malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the right thigh at age 66. There was no evide

Surgery of intraabdominal giant dedifferentiated liposarcoma of ascending colon mesentery: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Liposarcoma, a lipogenic tumor of large deep-seated connective tissue space, presents the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma arising in the retroperitoneum. Liposarcoma that arises from colonic mesentery is especially a very rare disease. The present case describes a surgery of giant dedifferentiated liposarcoma at ascending colon mesentery. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 47-year-old South Korean man was admitted and presented with palpable abdominal mass. Abdominal pelvic computed tomography scan revealed a huge mass at his right sided abdomen (about 25 × 19 cm sized mass at righ

Unusual spread of liposarcoma.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to investigate the unusual pattern of metastatic spread of liposarcoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied thirty-two patients with liposarcoma (in seventeen located in the retroperitoneum and in fifteen in the extremities) who were managed at our institution over a ten-year period. Six patients with extremity liposarcoma developed local recurrence and or distal metastases and in three the site of the distal spread was other than the lungs. In only one patient with retroperitoneal liposarcoma we observed extra-pulmonary spread. The histologi

Liposarcoma: exploration of clinical prognostic factors for risk based stratification of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Prognosis and optimal treatment strategies of liposarcoma have not been fully defined. The purpose of this study is to define the distinctive clinical features of liposarcomas by assessing prognostic factors. METHODS: Between January 1995 and May 2008, 94 liposarcoma patients who underwent surgical resection with curative intent were reviewed. RESULTS: Fifty patients (53.2%) presented with well differentiated, 22 (23.4%) myxoid, 15 (16.0%) dedifferentiated, 5 (5.3%) round cell, and 2 (2.1%) pleomorphic histology. With the median 14 cm sized of tumor burden, about half of the case

Pleomorphic lipoma. Case reports and review of the literature.

Two patients are reported with pleomorphic lipoma, a benign subcutaneous fatty tumor showing atypia in which histologic diagnosis may be difficult. The tumors are well circumscribed lesions, most commonly occurring in the neck and shoulder of middle aged men. An important histologic criteria is the presence of floret-like multinucleated giant cells embedded in a myxoid stroma. Pleomorphic lipoma may be confused with several malignant soft-tissue neoplasms, including myxoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma and variants of liposarcoma. It is important to establish the correct diagnosis to avoid un

Primary pleural liposarcoma: A rare entity.

Primary pleural liposarcoma (PPL) is a rare malignant tumor of the pleura. The diagnosis of PPL may be suspected on chest imaging based on radiologic features such as large pleural mass showing areas of fat with or without calcification. Herein, we present the case of a 32-year-old male whose contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the chest revealed a large, heterogeneous, hypodense, right pleural-based mass with small areas of fat and calcification within it. An ultrasound-guided biopsy was performed, which confirmed the diagnosis of a myxoid variant of pleural liposarcoma.

[Recurrent primary mediastinal liposarcoma with histological change].

INTRODUCTION: Primary mediastinal liposarcomas are rare tumours with various histological features. Local recurrence is frequent. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 70-year-old patient, in whom a mediastinal mass was resected surgically and identified as a mediastinal, "lipoma-like" liposarcoma on histopathological examination. Nine years later, the patient complained of dyspnoea with cough. The chest X-ray showed anterior mediastinal enlargement and the chest CT scan revealed a heterogeneous mass containing both solid tissue and fat. The patient underwent a successful surgical resection of

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, fluorescence in situ hybridization and genomic copy number profiling study of seven cases.

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva was first described as a benign mesenchymal neoplasm of adipocytic differentiation having features of lipoblastoma, myxoid liposarcoma, and spindle cell lipoma. Prior studies of lipoblastoma-like tumor have evaluated PLAG1, HMGA2, and RB1 immunohistochemistry and DDIT3 rearrangement status, with results supporting its distinction from lipoblastoma and myxoid liposarcoma. However, absent RB1 expression was reported in a majority of tested cases, suggesting that lipoblastoma-like tumor may have underlying 13q alterations and be related to RB1-deleted soft tis

Distant metastasis of liposarcoma to the dura and skull: a case report.

A case of metastatic liposarcoma of both skull and brain originating from the lower extremity is described. A 44-year-old male underwent removal of a myxoid type liposarcoma in his left upper thigh and a second operation for local recurrence. A metastatic liposarcoma was also discovered in the mediastinum and treated by radiotherapy. Six years after the initial onset, he presented with progressive consciousness disturbance, motor aphasia, right hemiparesis and subcutaneous swelling in the left frontal region. Neuroimaging showed a large tumour extending both intracranially and extracranially a

Reassessment and clinicopathological prognostic factors of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of soft parts.

Recently, the category of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) has been under discussion and new entities resembling MFH have appeared. To clarify the recent situation regarding MFH, we reassessed previously diagnosed MFH cases in accordance with the most up-to-date diagnostic criteria, which included allied tumors. We carefully reassessed 428 cases that had been diagnosed in our institute during the past 28 years. Moreover, we searched for clinicopathological prognostic factors among the cases that were finally diagnosed as MFH. Among the 428 cases, 138 cases had their diagnoses changed. The

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord.

A man in his 60s presented to an outside hospital with persistent groin pain and a scrotal mass which was thought to be a recurrent hernia. Three months after initial presentation, the patient was found to have dedifferentiated liposarcoma (LPS) of the spermatic cord. LPS of the spermatic cord is a rare entity; however, clinicians should have LPS on the differential diagnosis especially in men with recurrent scrotal pain and mass. If unrecognised, LPS is associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. LPS can be subdivided into well-differentiated LPS, dedifferentiated LPS, myxoid LP

Liposarcoma involving the periodontal tissues. A case report.

Liposarcomas constitute 15 to 20% of all soft tissue tumors. They are extremely rare in the head and neck and in the oral cavity. A 30-year-old patient was seen for a soft, painless mass in the right palate. Through panoramic radiography it was possible to observe a radiolucent area with sharp margins in the right upper quadrant. The lesion, after an incisional biopsy, was diagnosed as a "myxoid liposarcoma." The patient underwent a wide excision of the lesion with bone laminectomy and he is well at a 4-year follow-up. The differential diagnosis included salivary gland tumors and palatal absce

Liposarcoma occurring in children. An analysis of 17 cases and review of the literature.

Liposarcoma, one of the most common malignant mesenchymal neoplasms affecting adults, has rarely been documented to arise in children. Therefore, in this retrospective study, the clinicopathologic features of 17 liposarcomas retrieved from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) which occurred in patients between the ages of eight months and 15 years were analyzed. In contrast to the slight male prevalence verified in most studies of adult liposarcoma, this group of 17 cases disclosed a distinct female majority (65%). The tumor had a predilection for the lower extremity (41

[A case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma].

A case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma is reported. A 42-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of a palpable mass in her left abdomen. Intravenous pyelography, barium enema and an ultrasonogram revealed a huge left abdominal tumor. At operation, a huge yellow-brownish tumor found in the retroperitoneal space, was completely removed. The tumor was 32 x 24 x 12 cm and weighed 4,075 g. Histologically, it was a myxoid liposarcoma. Three courses of adjuvant chemotherapy (cis-platin) were administered. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient has been free of d

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma. Clinicopathologic analysis of 32 cases suggesting a better prognostic subgroup among pleomorphic sarcomas.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is uncommon, and only a small number of cases have been documented. We describe the clinicopathologic features in a series of 32 cases. All patients were adults (age range, 37-83 years; median, 67 years); 20 were men and 12 were women. Commonest site was the retroperitoneum (fifteen cases); six cases arose in the limbs, four in the paratesticular region, three in the peritoneal cavity, two on the trunk, and one each in the buttock and larynx. One primary tumor was subcutaneous. Thirty tumors arose de novo (i.e., combined with well-differentiated tumor in the primar

A case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma consisting of three large nodules with three different types of histologic findings is presented. A 69-year-old man was diagnosed as having a malignant tumor in the retroperitoneum and underwent successful tumor extirpation. The resected tumor had three different type of nodules, 18 X 15 X 7.0 cm, 8 X 15 X 4.0 cm, 15 X 10 X 2.5 cm in size, respectively. The histologic examination revealed myxoid, well-differentiated fibrosing and lipoma-like liposarcoma type, respectively. Chemotherapy was undertaken postoperatively, and there is no evidence of recurrence

Liposarcoma of the colon: a case report and review of literature.

Liposarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor frequently located in the retroperitoneum and rarely presents as an isolated lesion in the colon. To our knowledge, only three cases of primary colon liposarcoma have been reported in the world literature to date. In this article, we report a case of liposarcoma of the colon in a 46-year-old man. The patient presented with abdominal pain and a palpable mass. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomogram confirmed the presence of a large intra-abdominal fatty tissue mass, but the colon origin of the tumor was revealed only on laparotomy. During sur

Angiomyxolipoma of the hard palate: a rare case report.

Lipoma is a common, benign soft tissue neoplasm consisting of mature adipocytes. Other variants exist, notably angiomyxolipoma, also referred to as vascular myxolipoma, which is an exceedingly rare benign lipomatous tumor characterized by the intimate admixture of three components: mature adipose tissue, paucicellular myxoid stroma, and a prominent vascular network. We present the case of a 55-year-old female patient who presented with a palatal swelling. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed an angiomyxolipoma. No abnormalities were noted after one year. Angiomyxolipo
