Three principles governing the interpretation of biochemical criteria of trace element status are identified; they concern the relationships between the concentration of the marker and the intake of the element, the time on an adequate regimen and disturbances of tissue function. From these principles, the concentrations of liver copper, liver vitamin B12 and ovine serum vitamin B12 are shown to be insensitive indices of deficiency but good indices of surfeit. Plasma copper less than 9 mumol/litre is a good index of marginally deficiency but values may have to fall below 3 mumol/litre before t

Sera from 1,206 livestock animals and chickens on Grenada and Trinidad were tested for leptospiral antibodies by the microscopic agglutination test. 376 of the sera were positive (25% of those tested on Grenada and 44% on Trinidad). The positive sera were obtained from 25% of 324 cattle, 35% of 130 pigs, 35% of 146 sheep, 25% of 44 goats and 11% of 175 chickens on Grenada; and 92% of 26 cattle, 53% of 122 pigs, 76% of 87 horses and donkeys and 11% of 144 chickens on Trinidad. Eight sera from ducks and geese on Trinidad were tested and found to be negative. The serogroups most commonly found to…

Fascioliasis caused by Fasciola hepatica was a serious problem for sheep and alpacas in the Altiplano Region of Bolivia. In some provinces close to Lake Titicaca, the raising of sheep was forced to discontinue, because infection with the fluke made it unprofitable and almost impossible. It was proved that in the Altiplano Region, two species of freshwater snails, Lymnaea viatrix and L. cubensis var., served as intermediate hosts for F. hepatica. In some subtropical areas of Bolivia, these snails could not be found, although other Lymnaea sp. was widely distributed there. As it is possible for

The escalating crisis of antibiotic resistance has driven the global livestock and poultry industry to seek effective alternatives. Bacteriophages (phages) are promising candidates because their high host specificity allows targeted elimination of key intestinal pathogens, including Salmonella, Campylobacter, pathogenic Escherichia coli, and Clostridium perfringens, while sparing commensal microbiota. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which phages promote intestinal health in livestock and poultry, covering pathogen lysis, modulation of gut microbiota, reinforcement of the intestinal mu…

Understanding early embryogenesis in livestock remains a persistent bottleneck in both reproductive biology and animal breeding. Work in domestic species has long been limited by restricted access to embryos, ethical considerations, and the complexity of peri-implantation development, making mechanistic studies difficult. Recent advances in stem cell biology are beginning to shift this. Blastocyst-like structures, or blastoids, now offer a practical way to model early development in vitro. Blastoids capture key features of natural blastocysts, including overall structure, lineage composition, …

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to share with the community a spatial model of vampire-bat rabies (VBR) spillover risk developed with t … ditions. That is, the majority of the country has conditions similar to sites were VBR spillover to livestock has occurred in the past. The model identified 88 municipalities as being at high risk for VBR spillover (spillover risk ≥0.70). More years of vaccination data are needed for an accurate evaluation of the rabies vaccination program in cattle in Colo …

Botulism is a neuroparalytic disease caused by exposure to botulinum neurotoxins produced by anaerobic spore-forming bacteria of the genus Clostridium. This disease occurs in both humans and wild and domestic animals, and is currently becoming an increasingly serious problem worldwide due to high animal mortality and economic losses. The clinical signs observed during the progression of botulism are nonspecific and difficult to unequivocally associate with this disease entity. The aim of this study is to present laboratory diagnostics of suspected botulism cases reported in Poland in 2022-2024

This review explores the potential of Chlorella vulgaris (CLV) as an alternative supplement in animal feed. CLV is rich in essential nutrien … enhancing nutrient bioavailability and improving its utility as a feed ingredient. Research across livestock species has demonstrated the positive effects of CLV supplementation. For instance, CLV has improved milk production and composition in ruminants, modulated rumen microbiota, enhanced lamb growth, and elevated blood immunoglobulin levels. Moreover, …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Livestock disease outbreaks can generate significant macroeconomic harms, though few studies have combined epidemiological and macroeconomic analysis in a joint modelling framework. We reviewed existing approaches to epidemiological-macroeconomic modelling for livestock diseases, to identify challenges and opportunities for further model development.
METHODS: We systematically searched electronic databases for journal articles, preprints, working papers and grey literature. We assessed model methodologies, scope, and application to empirical data. We analysed result…

Ionophores, a class of animal antibiotics, are widely used in intensive livestock farming to enhance feed efficiency and control coccidiosis. These compounds, known for their ability to transport cations across biological membranes, are crucial in maintaining cellular homeostasis. However, their extensive use raises environmental and human health concerns. This manuscript offers a comprehensive review of ionophores in livestock production, highlighting their environmental impact and potential to contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It emphasizes the fate and transport of ionophores in…

Natural environments play a crucial role in transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Development of methods to manage antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural environments are usually limited to the laboratory or field scale, partially due to the complex dynamics of transmission between different environmental compartments. Here, we conducted a nine-year longitudinal profiling of ARGs at a watershed scale, and provide evidence that restrictions on livestock farms near water bodies significantly reduced riverine ARG abundance. Substantial reductions were revealed in the relative abu…

The ability of ticks to adapt to different ecological zones, coupled with the spread of infectious pathogens negatively affects livestock production and thus, there is a need for better control strategies. However, control measures within a geographical region can only be effective if there is available information on tick population dynamics and ecology. This study focused on ticks infesting livestock in the Kassena-Nankana Districts of the Upper East Region of Ghana. The ticks were morphologically identified, variables such as season, animal host, and predilection sites were recorded, and th…

In July 2023, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) was notified of possible occupational exposures to anthrax during an outbreak in animals. In consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, MDH epidemiologists created a questionnaire that assessed exposure risks and helped determine individual illness monitoring and antibiotic post-exposure prophylaxis needs. This investigation and the resources developed for it could be useful in future scenarios where there are occupational exposures to naturally occurring anthrax.

Blastocystis is a ubiquitous intestinal protist in humans and animals worldwide. The traditional livestock free-roaming raising system in rural communities increases the risk of infection with contact with a wider range of pathogens transmitted via the faecal-oral route associated with that wildlife-livestock-human interface. However, no studies have been conducted to determine the occurrence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in livestock in Portugal. Here, we collected 180 faecal samples from herbivore livestock (cattle, goats, horses, and sheep) in different regions of the country to …

Antibiotic resistance is a major global health threat. Agricultural use of antibiotics is considered to be a main contributor to the issue, influencing both animals and humans as defined by the One Health approach. The purpose of the present study was to determine the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations and the overall bacterial diversity of cattle farm soils that have been treated with animal manure compost. Soil and manure samples were collected from different sites at Tullimba farm, NSW. Cultures were grown from these samples in the presence of 11 commonly used antibioti
