A measure for characterizing sliding on lung boundaries.

The lobes of the lung slide relative to each other during breathing. Quantifying lobar sliding can aid in better understanding lung function, better modeling of lung dynamics, and for studying phenomenon such as pleural adhesion. We propose a novel measure to characterize lobe sliding in the lung based on the displacement field obtained from image registration of CT scans. When two sliding lobes are modeled as a continuum, the discontinuity in the displacement field at the fissure will manifest as elevated maximum shear--the proposed measure--which is capable of capturing both the level and or

Lung volumes and pressure-volume relations of the respiratory system in small ventilated neonates with severe respiratory distress syndrome.

Total lung capacity (TLC), inspiratory capacity (IC), functional residual capacity (FRC), and deflation pressure-volume (P-V) curves were studied in 16 intubated neonates (540-3300 g), 10 with severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and 6 air-ventilated with normal chest radiograms. FRC was measured using washout of a tracer gas (sulfur hexafluoride), and TLC and IC were calculated after inflating the lungs to 30 cm H2O. P-V curves were obtained during expiration from TLC using an interrupter technique, and the steepest slope of the curve, i.e. the maximum compliance (Crs-max), was calculat

Bronchomotor agents and hysteresis of collateral resistance in dog lobe.

The effect of smooth muscle tone on hysteresis of collateral channels was examined and compared with that of airways, in freshly excised dog lobes. A double lumen catheter was sealed into a branch off the main bronchus, and air (Vs) flowed through the outer lumen while the pressure in the segment (Ps) was measured by the inner lumen. Collateral conductance (Gcoll) was calculated as Gcoll = Vs/Ps. In another series of experiments a pleural capsule was used to measure either segmental airway flow (Vsaw) or capsule pressure (Pcap). Segmental airway conductance (Gsaw) was calculated as Gsaw = Vsaw

Role of hyperventilation in hypoxia on lung growth in rats.

This study was conducted in an attempt to differentiate the contribution of hyperventilation, if any, from that of low PO2 on adaptive lung growth in response to hypoxia. Male albino rats were exposed to one of the following: (1) Room air for 7 days, as control; (2) 10% O2 in N2 for 7 days; (3) 10% O2 for 6 h, 1 day or 2 days and air for the remaining of 7 days; (4) 10% O2 for 2 days and 7% CO2 in air for 5 days; (5) air for 2 days and 7% CO2 for 5 days; or (6) 7% CO2 in air for 7 days. Lung growth was assessed by measuring the lung weight, lung air volume, lung DNA content and rate of DNA syn

[Angiotensin converting enzyme in the adult respiratory distress syndrome].

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is present in high concentration in pinocytotic vesicles of the inner walls of the capillary endothelial cells of the lungs. Since a lesion of these endothelial cells is considered to be a major pathogenetic factor in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the question arises whether serum ACE could be used as a marker enzyme in the course of ARDS to assess the syndrome's development and prognosis. The authors examined 28 patients with ARDS, 14 of whom survived acute respiratory failure. The serum ACE was determined every 48 hours. In addition, daily de

[Reduction of pulmonary capillary volume following acute respiratory distress syndrome in adults].

Lung function after adult respiratory distress syndrome was evaluated in 8 survivors whose ages ranged from 20 to 54 years. At the time of the study, 5.5 to 19 months after extubation, all patients were asymptomatic at rest but 6 had mild to moderate exertional dyspnea. Physical examination was normal in 7 patients; lung volumes, flow rates and pulmonary mechanics were minimally altered, mainly in smokers. Chest X-rays showed no major abnormalities. On graded submaximal exercise test, performance was limited by tachycardia and not by ventilation. Resting arterial PO2 was low in 6 patients and

Lung function in acromegaly.

Lung function has been assessed by spirometry, body plethysmography, flow volume loops and single breath transfer factor in thirty patients with acromegaly. Having excluded eight patients with kyphosis and/or clinical or radiological evidence of pulmonary venous hypertension we have found a significant correlation between duration of acromegaly and lung size as assessed by total lung capacity. Excluding the same eight patients we have found evidence of small airways narrowing in eight patients, seven of these eight had had acromegaly for nine years or longer, and the duration of acromegaly was

Bleomycin-related lung damage: CT evidence.

Computed tomography (CT) examinations of the chest were evaluated in 100 patients treated with bleomycin. The CT findings were compared with those of conventional chest radiographs and lung-function tests. Lung damage due to bleomycin was detected in 38% of patients by CT, while damage was detected in only 15% by radiography. Changes in appearance seen on CT scans due to bleomycin damage were compared with measurements of lung volume and gas transfer per unit lung volume. There was good correlation between severity of damage shown on CT scans and changes in lung volume (P less than 0.01). Gas

Operating lung volume and perceived dyspnea during progressive hypercapnia: the effect of biological sex.

Females often report greater breathing discomfort and unpleasantness than males during exercise, secondary to a greater respiratory mechanical load for a given level of ventilation. However, sex differences in breathing discomfort/unpleasantness and the relative influence of respiratory mechanics during hypercapnia (increased arterial CO2 tension) are poorly understood. We compared ventilatory and perceptual parameters during progressive hypercapnia in young healthy females and males. We hypothesized that heightened dyspnea during hypercapnia in females would be associated with greater mechani

Determining operating lung volumes during a CO2 rebreathing test: does the inspiratory capacity maneuver influence the hypercapnic ventilatory response?

Previous studies using the modified Duffin CO2 rebreathing test have not accounted for changes in operating lung volumes, which may affect the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR). Importantly, determining operating lung volumes requires the performance of an inspiratory capacity (IC) maneuver, which could influence the HCVR. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if serial IC measurements during a modified Duffin CO2 rebreathing test influenced HCVR. Thirty young healthy participants (15 male:15 female) completed two modified Duffin CO2 rebreathing tests on separate days (or

Abnormalities in lung volumes and airflow in children with newly diagnosed connective tissue disease.

INTRODUCTION: Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) of childhood are rare inflammatory disorders, involving various organs and tissues including respiratory system. Pulmonary involvement in patients with CTDs is uncommon but may cause functional impairment. Data on prevalence and type of lung function abnormalities in children with CTDs are scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to asses pulmonary functional status in children with newly diagnosed CTD and follow the results after two years of the disease course. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 98 children (mean age: 13 ± 3; 76 girls), treated i

A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of Lung Volume Recruitment in Adults with Neuromuscular Disease.

Rationale: Clinical care guidelines advise that lung volume recruitment (LVR) be performed routinely by people with neuromuscular disease (NMD) to maintain lung and chest wall flexibility and slow lung function decline. However, the evidence base is limited, and no randomized controlled trials of regular LVR in adults have been published. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of regular LVR on respiratory function and quality of life in adults with NMD. Methods: A randomized controlled trial with assessor blinding was conducted between September 2015 and May 2019. People (>14 years old) with NMD

Quantitative cardiopulmonary magnetic resonance imaging in neonatal congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension, impaired cardiac function and lung hypoplasia are common in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Robust noninvasive methods to quantify these abnormalities in early infancy are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of MRI to quantify cardiopulmonary hemodynamics and function in infants with CDH and to investigate left-right blood flow and lung volume discrepancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective MRI study of 23 neonates (isolated left CDH: 4 pre-

Elevated airway liquid volumes at birth: a potential cause of transient tachypnea of the newborn.

Excessive liquid in airways and/or distal lung tissue may underpin the respiratory morbidity associated with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). However, its effects on lung aeration and respiratory function following birth are unknown. We investigated the effect of elevated airway liquid volumes on newborn respiratory function. Near-term rabbit kittens (30 days gestation; term ~32 days) were delivered, had their lung liquid-drained, and either had no liquid replaced (control; n = 7) or 30 ml/kg of liquid re-added to the airways [liquid added (LA); n = 7]. Kittens were mechanically venti
