Joint Diabetic Macular Edema Segmentation and Characterization in OCT Images.

The automatic identification and segmentation of edemas associated with diabetic macular edema (DME) constitutes a crucial ophthalmological issue as they provide useful information for the evaluation of the disease severity. According to clinical knowledge, the DME disorder can be categorized into three main pathological types: serous retinal detachment (SRD), cystoid macular edema (CME), and diffuse retinal thickening (DRT). The implementation of computational systems for their automatic extraction and characterization may help the clinicians in their daily clinical practice, adjusting the di…

Characteristics of diabetic macular edema patients with serous retinal detachment.

To determine characteristics of diabetic macular edema patients with serous retinal detachment (SRD).We classified naïve diabetic macular edema (DME) patients with or without SRD, and compared their baseline characteristics; intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) responsiveness; aqueous concentrations of IL (interleukin)-1β, -2, -8, -10, -17, placental growth factor (PlGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In addition, factors associated with the existence of SRD were identified.Of the 64 DME patients, 14 had SRD. The average levels of aqueous VEGF and PlGF were significantly higher in t…

Prednisolone versus dexamethasone for prevention of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema.

OBJECTIVE: Prevention of cystoid macular edema (CME) is important to achieve good surgical outcomes after cataract surgery. Although many options for management exist, control of postoperative inflammation with topical steroids is one of the most commonly employed. We evaluated the difference in incidence of pseudophakic CME in patients treated with prednisolone or dexamethasone topical steroids. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review of patients who had undergone phacoemulsification at the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. Reviewable patient charts had to indicate the …

Argon Laser Photocoagulation For Macular Edema In Branch Vein Occlusion.

The Branch Vein Occlusion Study is a multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial designed to answer several questions regarding the management of complications of branch vein occlusion. This report discusses the question, "Is argon laser photocoagulation useful in improving visual acuity in eyes with branch vein occlusion and macular edema reducing vision to 20/40 or worse?" One hundred thirty-nine eligible eyes were assigned randomly to either a treated or an untreated control group. Comparing treated patients to control patients (mean follow-up 3.1 years for all study eyes), the gain…
