Magnesium is an important element in health and in disease, it is the organism's second most abundant intracellular cation, after potassium, and it is the main divalent intracellular cation. Its metabolic importance is well known, as it has been identified as a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions which affect the energetic metabolism, and the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, Hypomagnesemia is a frequent finding in hospitalized patients, even more so when the patients are critical (+/-65%). Although low serum levels of magnesium imply the presence of intracellular depletion, n…

The next matter under discussion is magnesium. It has the greatest meaning in metabolism. The magnesium activates more than 300 enzymes and takes part in almost all functions of cellular life. Shortage of magnesium shows almost 100% of our population. Supplementation improves treatment of patients and prevents many diseases- first of all: circulatory system and nervous system, and in many cases absolutely prolongations life time.

Our knowledge of magnesium absorption in infants and dietary factors affecting magnesium bioavailability from infant diets is limited. The magnesium concentration of human milk is about 30 mg/litre, while infant formulas provide about 40-80 mg/litre and cows milk approximately 130 mg/litre. Most of the magnesium in these diets is present in soluble form and in vitro digestibility studies show the remainder to be easily solubilized. The soluble magnesium in infant diets is largely in a low molecular weight form, most likely explaining the high bioavailability of magnesium from infant diets in e…

Magnesium participates in a number of biochemical reactions that seem to be important when lung function is disturbed. A low intake of magnesium in the diet increases bronchial reactivity. Magnesium supplementation reduces bronchial constriction and pressure in pulmonary hypertension, and increases the force of the respiratory muscles. In experimental animals, magnesium supplementation prevents lung changes precipitated by acoustic trauma. These changes are similar to the adult respiratory distress syndrome in humans. Theofylline, an important drug in the treatment of severe bronchial asthma, …

The evidence for disordered mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and reduced intracellular free magnesium in brain and body tissue of migraine suffers both between and during an attack is reviewed. We propose that between attacks these metabolic shifts cause instability of neuronal function which enhances the susceptibility of brain to develop a migraine attack.

Magnesium is a prominent intracellular cation required for the function of hundreds of enzyme systems. Magnesium depletion is observed frequently in hospitalized patients and is usually secondary to renal or intestinal magnesium loss. Clinically, magnesium deficiency may present with neuromuscular hyperexcitability, hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, and cardiac arrhythmias. Magnesium therapy appears to improve survival in patients with myocardial infarction. The diagnosis of magnesium deficiency is usually made by a low-serum magnesium concentration, although the magnesium tolerance test may be more …

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the potential link between diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypomagnesemia, the methods used to assess magnesium status, and the potential benefits of magnesium repletion in hypomagnesemic patients with DM.
DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search (key terms: magnesium and diabetes) was conducted to identify pertinent literature.
STUDY SELECTION: All major clinical trials and most published case reports were reviewed.
SYNTHESIS: Several studies have demonstrated a higher than expected frequency of magnesium deficiency in patients with DM. Hypomagnesemia may play a role in the developm…

Pregnancy induces a significant decrease of magnesium levels in serum and myometrium of 15%. A 25% increase of magnesium excretion in urine may be the most important reason. Magnesium supplementation during pregnancy seems necessary because it improves maternal health and fetal outcome. Magnesium supplementation reduces the incidence of preterm labour and vaginal haemorrhage. Premature delivery is significantly reduced from 8.2 to 2.8%. Intravenous magnesium application in pharmacological doses is still the therapeutic basis in pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. In gynaecology magnesium relieves pre…

Magnesium is the second most important intracellular cation after potassium in the human cell. Its pathologic and therapeutic role is well established in a large number of chronic conditions as vascular heart diseases, arrhythmias, hypertension, nephrolithiasis, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, as well as in liver and pancreatic diseases. A broad spectrum of different clinical aspects and need of supplementation of magnesium is reviewed by the authors. Since suitable preparations are not available in the market the substitution of magnesium can cause difficulties in the practice.

Literature data on mutual correlation of magnesium and heavy metals in the body are reviewed. The effects of synergistic and antagonistic type have been found. Metals are divided into two groups: elements with toxic effect (e.g. Pb) and bioelements (e. g. Zn) which serve as an example in the discussion of biological role of magnesium.

Magnesium is an important ion in all living cells being a cofactor of many enzymes, especially those utilising high energy phosphate bounds. The relationship between insulin and magnesium has been recently studied. In particular it has been shown that magnesium plays the role of a second messenger for insulin action; on the other hand, insulin itself has been demonstrated to be an important regulatory factor of intracellular magnesium accumulation. Conditions associated with insulin resistance, such as hypertension or aging, are also associated with low intracellular magnesium contents. In dia…

The psychiatric symptoms of magnesium deficiency are unspecific, ranging from apathy to psychosis, and may be attributed to other disease processes associated with poor intake, defect absorption, or excretion of magnesium. Serum magnesium should be determined when there are symptoms consistent with magnesium deficiency and/or in conditions which can lead to a deficiency, e.g., malabsorption, malnutrition, alcoholism and diuretic treatment. A low serum value suggests magnesium deficiency, but the diagnosis is reinforced with analyses of magnesium in the urine and a loading test with magnesium. …

Although studies in mammalian cells and yeast suggest that Mg2+ plays an important role in cell growth and hormone response, intracellular roles of Mg2+ are poorly understood. Thus, we are developing methods to study Mg2+ regulation of growth and hormonal response. Preliminary data using cell-permeable Mg2+ indicators based on tropolone suggest the feasibility of the dynamic and selective determination of intracellular free Mg2+ concentration. "Mg2+-deficient" cell lines have also been developed. Murine S49 lymphoma cells in normal 0.8 mM Mg2+ medium double in 17 hours, but die when placed in
