Development of Resorbable Phosphate-Based Glass Microspheres as MRI Contrast Media Agents.

In this research, resorbable phosphate-based glass (PBG) compositions were developed using varying modifier oxides including iron (Fe2O3), copper (CuO), and manganese (MnO2), and then processed via a rapid single-stage flame spheroidisation process to manufacture dense (i.e., solid) and highly porous microspheres. Solid (63-200 µm) and porous (100-200 µm) microspheres were produced and characterised via SEM, XRD, and EDX to investigate their surface topography, structural properties, and elemental distribution. Complementary NMR investigations revealed the formation of Q2, Q1, and Q0 phosphate

Application of real-time MRI-guided linear accelerator in stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer: one step forward to precise targeting.

PURPOSE: Tumor motion is a major challenge in stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), causing excessive irradiation to compensate for this motion. Real-time tumor tracking with a magnetic resonance imaging-guided linear accelerator (MR-Linac) could address this problem. This study aimed to assess the effects and advantages of MR-Linac in SABR for the treatment of lung tumors. METHODS: Overall, 41 patients with NSCLC treated with SABR using MR-Linac between March 2019 and December 2021 were included. For comparison, 40 patients treated with SABR u

Synthesis of BSA-Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Size Control for High-Performance T1 Contrast Agents in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The excellent biocompatibility and favorable physicochemical properties of iron oxide nanoparticles have made them attractive candidates for magnetic resonance imaging. However, it remains challenging to synthesize high-performance T1 contrast agents with controlled sizes and biocompatible coating materials. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing ultra-small iron oxide nanoparticles using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template. Following synthesis, the iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were oxidized to Fe2O3 via the addition of hydrogen p

Imaging of inflammation in the peripheral and central nervous system by magnetic resonance imaging.

Inflammation plays a central role in the pathophysiology of numerous disorders of the nervous system, but is also pivotal for repair processes like peripheral nerve regeneration. In this review we summarize recent advances in cellular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while nuclear imaging methods to visualize neuroinflammation are covered by Wunder et al. [Wunder A, Klohs J, Dirnagl U (2009) Non-invasive imaging of central nervous system inflammation with nuclear and optical imaging. Neuroscience, in press]. Use of iron oxide-contrast agents allows assessment of inflammatory processes in livin

[Intractable and atypical benign paroxysmal vertigo. Pathological results of high-resolution three-dimensional MR-tomography of the vestibular organ].

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent vestibular disorder and a most common cause of dizziness and vertigo. The modern canalolithiasis theory postulates the existence of free-floating dense otolithic particles in the endolymph of the posterior semicircular canal. The symptoms were exactly described by Dix and Hallpike; BPPV is normally a self-limited disease with spontaneous recovery. There is however a small number of patients who do not respond to any treatment or who present with otolithic vertigo which does not fit all Dix-Hallpike criteria (atypical BPPV). While

In-depth understanding of the multimodal deformable image registration tool of a 0.35 T MR-linac.

Linear accelerators (linac) with embedded magnetic resonance (MR) imaging involves a specific workflow that includes systematically a deformable image registration (DIR) with computed tomography images for the management of electron densities. Poor quality registration outputs could cause suboptimal dose calculations and planning treatments. The treatment planning system of the 0.35 T MR-linac MRIdian (ViewRay Inc., Oakwood Village) includes such a multimodal DIR tool with several adjustable parameters. To assist Viewray's users, this work investigates the influence of each parameter from the

Anti-SRP antibody-positive polymyositis complicated by neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: a case report and literature review.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating disease primarily affecting the optic nerves and spinal cord. Polymyositis (PM) is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness. The anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibody is a myositis-specific autoantibody. We herein present a case of anti-SRP antibody-positive PM that developed 6 years after the onset of NMOSD. A 52-year-old woman was diagnosed with NMOSD 6 years previously based on left visual disturbance, a high signal intensity and contrast enhancement of t

Removal of Hg(II) by poly(1-vinylimidazole)-grafted Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles.

Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles modified by grafting poly(1-vinylimidazole) oligomer (FSPV) was fabricated as a novel adsorbent to remove Hg(II) from water. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy confirmed the successful grafting of oligomer, and thermogravimetric analysis showed FSPV had a high grafting yield with organic content of 22.8%. Transmission electron microscopy image displayed that FSPV particles were polymer-coated spheres with size of 10-20 nm. With saturation magnetization of 44.7 emu/g, FSPV particles could be easily separated from water with a simple magnetic process in 5

MRI of transplanted neural stem cells.

Stem cell-based therapy has the potential to improve the prospect of patients suffering from many untreatable diseases. Applications of stem cells for therapy of neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke, are particularly appealing as damage of the central nervous system is irreversible and the efficacy of conventional therapy is limited. Despite a broad interest among researchers and clinicians, progress in this field has been slow due to the remarkable complexity of the brain, which makes the task of repairing damaged tissue with

Recent advances in zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) based nanostructures for magnetic hyperthermia applications.

Spinel ferrite-based magnetic nanomaterials have been investigated for numerous biomedical applications, including targeted drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biosensors, among others. Recent studies have found that zinc ferrite-based nanomaterials are favorable candidates for cancer theranostics, particularly for magnetic hyperthermia applications. Zinc ferrite exhibits excellent biocompatibility, minimal toxicity, and more importantly, exciting magnetic properties. In addition, these materials demonstrate a Curie temperature much lower t

Numerical analysis of airflow and particle deposition in multi-fidelity designs of nasal replicas following nasal administration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An improved understanding of flow behaviour and particle deposition in the human nasal airway is useful for optimising drug delivery and assessing the implications of pollutants and toxin inhalation. The geometry of the human nasal cavity is inherently complex and presents challenges and manufacturing constraints in creating a geometrically realistic replica. Understanding how anatomical structures of the nasal airway affect flow will shed light on the mechanics underpinning flow regulation in the nasal pharynx and provide a means to interpret flow and particle deposi

Hybrid silica-coated Gd-Zn-Cu-In-S/ZnS bimodal quantum dots as an epithelial cell adhesion molecule targeted drug delivery and imaging system.

Dual-modal imaging probes based on fluorescence (FL) and magnetic resonance (MR) modalities have attracted great attention due to their ability to combine the target specificity and high penetration into body tissues. In this study, we developed a potent nanocarrier with an effective photoluminescent emission and MR imaging capacity to deliver the doxorubicin to breast cancer 4T1 cells. The nanocarrier was fabricated by coating of quantum dots (QDs) with mesoporous silica followed by amine functionalization of the silica surface. Then, the doxorubicin was loaded into the silica pores and bihet

Fe3O4@ABA-aniline-CuI nanocomposite as a highly efficient and reusable nanocatalyst for the synthesis of benzothiazole-sulfide aryls and heteroaryls.

Studying diaryl sulfides and benzothiazoles is important in organic synthesis because numerous natural and medicinal products contain these scaffolds. Over the past few years, research on the synthesis of compounds containing benzothiazole-sulfide aryls, as important biological molecules, has received significant attention. Multicomponent reactions are the most popular strategy for performing difficult reactions and the synthesis of complexed molecules such as benzothiazole-sulfide aryls. In this work, CuI was successfully immobilized on the surface of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified wit

One-step Preparation of Monodisperse Multifunctional Macroporous Particles through a Spontaneous Physical Process.

Macroporous particles that combine the property features of spherical structures and porous materials are expected to find use over micro- and macroscopic length scales from miniaturized systems such as cell imaging, drug and gene delivery to industrial applications. However, the capacity for de novo design of such materials is still limited. Here, a spontaneous process to fabricate monodisperse multifunctional macroporous particles (MMMPs) by high internal phase emulsion templating is reported. An interesting physical phenomenon involving self-emulsification and synergistic effects between na

Bioevaluation of magnetic mesoporous silica rods: cytotoxicity, cell uptake and biodistribution in zebrafish and rodents.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) characterized by large surface area, pore volume, tunable chemistry, and biocompatibility have been widely studied in nanomedicine as imaging and therapeutic carriers. Most of these studies focused on spherical particles. In contrast, mesoporous silica rods (MSR) that are more challenging to prepare have been less investigated in terms of toxicity, cellular uptake, or biodistribution. Interestingly, previous studies showed that silica rods penetrate fibrous tissues or mucus layers more efficiently than their spherical counterparts. Recently, we reported th

Engineering Superparamagnetic Fe3O4@Mg-MOF-74 for Advanced CO2 Capture Application.

This research discusses a novel approach to reduce the demanding regeneration phase in the carbon dioxide adsorption process. Through the employment of the magnetic induction swing adsorption technology, in situ heating adsorbents were developed, which were responsive to the induced magnetic field. The novel material, superparamagnetic Fe3O4@Mg-MOF-74, was synthesized via a layer-by-layer approach that integrates iron-(III) oxide (Fe3O4) as its magnetic core and Mg-MOF-74 as its highly porous shell in a defined core-shell structure. Ultrasonication and solvothermal methods were adopted to enha

Investigating the use of a solid water and copper electron filter for reducing skin dose in an inline MRI-linac.

BACKGROUND: Skin dose measurements for the inline MRI-linac show a highly concentrated skin dose hot spot at the central axis of the beam. This is because the electron contamination is focused in the presence of the inline magnetic field, causing a significant entry surface (or skin) dose hot spot. The future clinical treatment will employ a 2 cm water electron filter to reduce electron contamination from the X-ray beam; however, this approach affects the overall dose distribution, and the skin dose remains significantly high. PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of a copper ele

Small-sized gadolinium oxide based nanoparticles for high-efficiency theranostics of orthotopic glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most malignant tumors with poor prognosis and outcomes. Although smaller particle size can lead to higher blood-brain barrier (BBB)-permeability of the nanomaterials, most of the reported BBB-crossable nanomaterials for targeted GBM therapy are larger than 24 nm. To realize theranostics of GBM, co-loading of therapeutic and diagnostic agents on the same nanomaterials further results in larger particle size. In this study, we developed a kind of novel BBB-transportable nanomaterials smaller than 14 nm for high-efficiency theranostics of GBM (i.e., high contrast
