Brown bowel syndrome: a rare complication in diseases associated with long-standing malabsorption.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Longtime chronic malabsorption may among other things cause a lack of liposoluble vitamins. Vitamin E deficiency can lead to formation of lipofuscin aggregates. Its deficiency is also associated with an increased lipofuscinosis of the bowel, i.e. brown bowel syndrome. METHODS: Systematic research via Medline on brown bowel syndrome, lipofuscinosis, and vitamin E deficiency was performed. We combined our own clinical experience and a review of the literature for this paper. Its goal is to inform about the possible consequences of severe malabsorption and brown bowel syndrome.

Etiological spectrum of sporadic malabsorption syndrome in northern Indian adults at a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of malabsorption syndrome (MAS) may differ in different geographical regions. Limited data are available on the etiological spectrum of MAS among Indian adults. METHODS: Ninety-nine consecutive adult patients with MAS (urine d-xylose <1 g/5 g/5 h with or without increased fecal fat (> or =7 g/24 h) were evaluated for cause of MAS using standard criteria. Past medical records were examined to know the nature of treatment received. RESULTS: The etiology of MAS was: tropical sprue 39, celiac disease 9, Crohn's disease 9, giardiasis 8, small intestinal bacterial overgrow

The disaccharidase activity of jejunal mucosa in children with malabsorption syndrome caused by food intolerance.

In 30 children with malabsorption syndrome caused by cow's milk and gluten intolerance, disaccharidase activity in jejunal mucosa was determined. A statistically significant decrease of lactose and alkaline phosphatase < 3rd percentile was found which coresponded to the degree of intestinal villous atrophy. In those children temporary exclusion of lactose from food products is recommended.

Antibiotic-responsive malabsorption: a tropical sprue-like syndrome in countries with temperate climates.

Antibiotic-responsive malabsorption is prevalent in the tropics, but has been seen only sporadically in countries with temperate climates. We describe a 19-year-old Israeli patient who has never left the country and was hospitalized with shigellosis and malabsorption of fat and D-xylose. A short course of ampicillin reversed the malabsorption. The syndrome of antibiotic-responsive malabsorption in countries with temperate climates may well be underdiagnosed and should be looked for more actively.

[Selenium sufficiency in patients with malabsorption syndrome and its optimization with selenium enriched food supplements].

Selenium security was measured in 15 adult patients suffering from malabsorption syndrome, resulted from stomach and small intestine surgical resection consequences. In 7 of them (47%) marked deficiency of this essential trace element was revealed and in other 6 (40%)--suboptimal security. The indices of selenium security in observed patients markedly and significantly (p < 0.003) increased after a 3-week course of dietetic treatment including uptake of organic selenium enriched food supplement in amount equal to 90 mcg Se per day. This dietetic treatment had mild "physiologic" character that

Macroamylasaemia--a prognostic marker in a syndrome of malabsorption and complete villous atrophy? An uncommon clinical condition.

We report a rare case of chronic persistent hyperamylasaemia secondary to macroamylasaemia in association with coeliac disease in a 56-year-old woman. Her symptoms, including macroamylasaemia, ebbed away following commencement of a gluten free diet. Only four cases of a similar nature have been described in the literature. The differential diagnosis of macroamylasaemia should include coeliac disease, and an awareness of this association might obviate a variety of unnecessary diagnostic investigations.

Lactose malabsorption and irritable bowel syndrome. Effect of a long-term lactose-free diet.

Lactose malabsorption may induce abdominal symptoms indistinguishable from those of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), however the exact relationship between the two conditions and the optimal differential diagnostic workup are still to be defined. We prospectively studied the prevalence of lactose malabsorption (by means of a hydrogen breath test) and the clinical effect of a long-term lactose-free diet in 230 consecutive patients with a suggested diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, no organic disease of the GI tract, and no history of milk intolerance. Lactose malabsorption was diagnosed

[A case of fatal malabsorption syndrome caused by strongyloidiasis complicated with isosporiasis and human cytomegalovirus infection].

This 54-year-old Korean coal miner suffered from continuous watery diarrhea and weight loss after corticosteroid treatment (beta-methasone, 4 mg daily for 1 week) due to hip-bone fracture in January 1991. Except for the short therapy of steroid, no other histories were contributory. The malabsorption syndrome was aggravated while the case was treated under the impression of amebiasis or intestinal tuberculosis. AIDS antibody test by EIA was negative and quantitative analysis of serum immunoglobulins was in normal ranges. Nine months after the onset of symptoms, the case was diagnosed as malabs

[Polyglandular autoimmune type I syndrome with hypoparathyroidism, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and intestinal malabsorption].

The occurrence of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis accompanying polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type I is reported in a female aged 13. Apart the candidiasis, since the age of 3, she had convulsions beginning at 6, cataract at 9, teeth abnormalities, and basal ganglia calcifications. Laboratory data confirmed the diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism. This picture was accompanied by intestinal malabsorption, leading to a state of progressive malnutrition, with intense hypoalbuminemia and anemia. Although the pathophysiology of malabsorption, in these cases, is still not clear, the therapeutic res

Lactose sensitivity and malabsorption in functional dyspepsia and functional dyspepsia-irritable bowel syndrome overlap.

INTRODUCTION: Lactose intolerance is frequently suspected in disorders of gut-brain interaction, yet symptoms often do not align with objective malabsorption. While lactose-related symptoms have been investigated in irritable bowel syndrome, data on functional dyspepsia, particularly patients with overlapping irritable bowel syndrome, remain limited. This study examined the relative contribution of lactose sensitivity and lactose malabsorption to symptom burden, and evaluated whether functional dyspepsia-irritable bowel syndrome overlap is associated with greater symptom severity than function

INFLUENCE OF CARBOHYDRATE MALABSORPTION SYNDROME ON THE CLINICAL COURSE OF ROTAVIRUS INFECTION IN CHILDREN AT AN EARLY AGE.

The aim of the work - to determine the pathogenetic role of carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome in severity and duration of rotavirus infection symptoms in early aged children. The study included 60 breastfed children aged 1-24 months with rotavirus infection. The severity and duration of the main symptoms of rotavirus gastroenteritis were analyzed depending on the dynamic changes in laboratory parameters of carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome: the total amount of reducing carbohydrates in feces, lactose and glucose in feces, which were determined on II-III, V, VII and X days of the disease. T
