The yield of clinical sensory tests and electrophysiologic tests in the diagnostics of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) was studied. The diagnostic value of these tests was evaluated by comparing the test results to the degree of nerve damage at the end of the operation as documented by means of the intraoperative nerve conduction recording of the IAN. Twenty patients undergoing BSSO were analysed preoperatively and 2 weeks postoperatively. The frequency of the IAN disturbance ranged from 10% to 94% depending on the test method and the test s

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified bone remodeling in the mandibular angle region (MAR) as a key factor influencing outcomes after mandibular angle osteotomy (MAO). This study investigates hematologic predictors-red blood cell (RBC) count and hemoglobin (Hb) levels-and their correlation with postoperative MAR bone remodeling.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 135 patients who underwent MAO between January 2015 and December 2022. Bone remodeling was assessed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging at two time points: T1 (immediately postoperatively) and T2

A 34-year-old woman with mandibular micrognathia, vertical maxillary excess, and an open bite characterized by a "bird-face" deformity was treated with orthodontics combined with LeFort I and bilateral inverted L osteotomies. The total treatment time was 16 months. Her occlusion and facial appearance were significantly improved by a surgical-orthodontic plan. This case report presents the discussion of a unique and complex orthognathic surgical case and the myriad of orthodontic and surgical considerations that it involved.

OBJECTIVES: Optimal contouring of fibula free flaps (FFF) for mandibulectomy often requires osteotomies. This study aimed to define criteria for initial gap width by evaluating whether postoperative gap size and other factors influence long-term osseous union on CBCT, and to identify key determinants of bone healing.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 75 patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with FFF reconstruction from 2017 to 2024. Initial osteotomy gaps were measured at four points on postoperative CBCT scans. Osseous union was assessed using a callus scale. Demographic,

There is no treatment algorithm to decide whether maxillomandibular or mandibular osteotomy alone should be performed in borderline cases. This study assessed the factors that affect the changes in soft tissue after mandibular setback. Patients who underwent mandibular osteotomy alone to correct mandibular protrusion were included in this study. Hard and soft tissue analyses were performed on lateral cephalograms before and 12±3 months after surgery. The popular points were set for referencing hard and soft tissues on the lateral cephalogram. Nasolabial, labiomental, and soft tissue facial pla…

PURPOSE: Facial asymmetry often persists even after mandibular deviation corrected by the bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) operation, since the reference facial sagittal plane for the asymmetry analysis is usually set up before the mandibular menton (Me) point correction. Our aim is to develop a predictive and quantitative method to assess the true asymmetry of the mandible after a midline correction performed by a virtual BSSRO, and to verify its availability by evaluation of the post-surgical improvement.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at th
