Short-term effect of osteopathic manual techniques (OMT) on respiratory function in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory system diseases are some of the most common pathologies worldwide. Although osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) is used predominantly to treat other pathologies, certain OMT techniques have been shown to improve patients' respiratory function. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of osteopathic techniques on breathing. METHODS: Tests were performed with the use of a spirometer and the results were expressed as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF). Thirty healthy males and females

Rhinitis: The Osteopathic Modular Approach.

Historically, osteopathic principles have focused on the appropriate drainage of cranial structures to relieve symptoms of rhinitis, which include nasal congestion, anterior/posterior rhinorrhea, sneezing, and itching. Allergic rhinitis is primarily an aberrant immunologic reaction caused by cytokines secreted from lymphocytes that traverse the lymphatic pathway throughout the body. Several studies have documented that, when manipulated, the lymphatic system enhanced the motion of these lymphocytes to important immune structures in both human and animal models. Additionally, modulation of both

Manual therapy as a conservative treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is contingent upon many variables. Simple observation is enough for less serious curvatures, but for very serious cases surgical intervention could be proposed. Between these there is a wide range of different treatments. Manual therapy is commonly used: the aim of this paper is to verify the data existing in the literature on the efficacy of this approach. METHODS: A systematic review of the scientific literature published internationally has been performed. We have included in the term manual therapy all the manipulative and gener

Spinal manipulative therapy for low back pain.

Growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine in the United States has been paralleled by increased use of spinal manipulative therapy in an attempt to manage symptoms of low back pain, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. Chiropractors have been the main practitioners of spinal manipulative therapy, with osteopaths and physical therapists providing a smaller fraction of these services. Theories explaining the mode of action of spinal manipulative therapy are largely preliminary and have focused on the mechanical effects of manipulative forces on the spine and neurologic respon

Perceptions of nonopioid treatment for pain in a homeless population.

CONTEXT: Opioid abuse has developed into a public health emergency within the last decade because opioid medications, while addictive, are effective and commonly used for pain management. In 2016, over 42,000 deaths were attributed to opioids. Chronic pain affects about 50% of people experiencing homelessness in the US, and they have a higher overall rate of chronic pain than the general population; opioids are among the methods they might use to manage that pain. Complementary and alternative therapies for pain management have largely gone unexplored in the homeless population. OBJECTIVES: T

Osteopathic approach to sacroiliac dysfunction in a patient with steroid myopathy: case report and literature review.

Long-term steroid use has a well-documented risk of myopathy that imposes functional limitations for patients and challenges for health care providers. Proximal weakness from steroid myopathy affects support structures around the pelvic girdle and likely predisposes patients to somatic dysfunction. To the authors' knowledge, there are no prior reports in the literature that describe an osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) approach for patients with steroid myopathy. In the present case report, a 59-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia received a blood stem cell transplantation and dev

The epidemiology of osteopathic diagnoses and treatments in United States emergency departments from 2018 to 2021.

CONTEXT: Although a large proportion of US emergency physicians are osteopathic physicians (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine [DOs]), the frequency of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) use in emergency departments (EDs) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the frequency of OMM in EDs across the US and describe the cohort who received OMM. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of ED patients from 2018 to 2021 in the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Common outpatient diagnoses and associated treatments logged by osteopathic medical students within a geriatric population.

CONTEXT: Clinical clerkships provide osteopathic medical students the opportunity to participate in the diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered medical conditions. Appropriate management of these conditions may include pharmacotherapy and/or nonpharmacologic interventions, such as osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Opportunities may exist to expand the utilization of OMT in the management of common conditions, particularly for geriatric patients, who are at increased risk for adverse outcomes from pharmacologic treatments. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the most common

The use of superficial heat in the management of low back pain by chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia: an observational cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally and a major contributor to disease burden in Australia. Superficial heat is recognised as a non-pharmacological intervention for LBP. However, its clinical use among chiropractors and osteopaths remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine how chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia use superficial heat in the management of LBP, explore their perceptions of its role and effectiveness, and assess their awareness and application of clinical practice guidelines for LBP. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was

A Natural Approach to Bell's Palsy: An Osteopathic Treatment Option.

Bell's palsy (BP) is a rapid-onset neurological disorder causing unilateral facial paralysis, affecting approximately 40,000 people annually in the United States. Suggested treatments for BP include corticosteroids, facial therapy, and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in order to improve symptoms; however, some people with BP have spontaneous resolution. A 52-year-old female with left-sided facial paralysis and drooping for the past four months due to BP presented to the osteopathic treatment center. For the first three weeks after developing BP, the patient had soreness when attemptin

Clinically significant lung function improvement for collegiate soccer players after OMT with restrictive ribcage motion correlated with Expanded Zink screen.

CONTEXT: This study was undertaken to build upon the work of J. Gordon Zink, DO, FAAO, by developing a novel screening examination (Expanded Zink screen) that can correlate with proper identification of somatic dysfunction, the area of greatest restriction (AGR), and effective treatment in soccer players, which would elevate the osteopathic profession and advance the field of medicine. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are to determine whether the Expanded Zink screen can accurately correlate with the somatic dysfunctions found in soccer players, with what ended up being treated, and w

Objective measurement of Cranial Rhythmic Impulse (CRI): visual analysis of an observational case series.

UNLABELLED: One of the traditional principles of osteopathy is the presence of primary cranial movement, also defined as Cranial Rhythmic Impulse (CRI) in relevant literature. Though the presence of such movement is recognized by some and disputed by others, there is little evidence to support either stance. One of the main issues concerns the possibility of getting objective, simultaneous tracks of the physiological rhythms responsible for possible variations in size involving the skull and the whole body. The only data available in literature date back to old works which, according to the au

Analysis of a non-integer order mathematical model for double strains of dengue and COVID-19 co-circulation using an efficient finite-difference method.

An efficient finite difference approach is adopted to analyze the solution of a novel fractional-order mathematical model to control the co-circulation of double strains of dengue and COVID-19. The model is primarily built on a non-integer Caputo fractional derivative. The famous fixed-point theorem developed by Banach is employed to ensure that the solution of the formulated model exists and is ultimately unique. The model is examined for stability around the infection-free equilibrium point analysis, and it was observed that it is stable (asymptotically) when the maximum reproduction number

Osteopathic Manual Treatment for Pain Severity, Functional Improvement, and Return to Work in Patients With Chronic Pain.

CONTEXT: Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is associated with disability, poor quality of life (QOL), and failure to return to work (RTW). Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) or osteopathic manual therapy (OMTh) are increasingly offered to patients with CNCP; however, the existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the literature that explore the effectiveness of OMTh have major limitations. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the quality of evidence documenting the effectiveness of OMTh for patients with CNCP using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluati

Manipulation of the coccyx with anesthesia for the management of coccydynia.

Coccydynia is pain in and around the coccyx, with trauma being the most common etiologic factor. The authors describe the case of a 60-year-old woman who was injured in an automobile accident several months before consultation. After the physician recorded the patient's history, performed a physical examination, and reviewed imaging reports, lumbar radiculopathy and somatic dysfunction of the lumbar and sacral vertebrae were diagnosed as the cause of her coccydynia. During a 6-week period, the patient underwent a series of 3 epidural steroid injections, osteopathic mobilization of the lumbar a
