Gerodermia osteodysplastica: report on two patients and surgical correction of facial deformity.

We present four individuals with Gerodermia Osteodysplastica in a Jewish family from Morocco confirming the autosomal recessive inheritance of the disorder. Three previously unreported findings are described: a) enlarged funnel-shaped mandibular lingula; b) extension of the mandibular premolar and molar roots below the inferior dental canal, and of the second molars into the lower border of mandibular cortical bone; and c) hypercementosis of the maxillary incisors and mandibular molars surrounded by a radiolucent halo in several teeth. The facial deformity resulting from maxillary hypoplasia a

Evaluation of transpalatal distraction in cleft palate patients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combining a bone-borne palatal expander (distractor) with a maxillary osteotomy in the treatment of narrowed maxillae in treated cleft palate patients. Few articles in the literature isolated the effects of transpalatal distraction in cleft patients and most either excluded cleft patients or grouped them with non-cleft patients. The hypothesis is that the use of a bone-borne palatal expander in conjunction with a maxillary osteotomy would improve the amount of maxillary expansion at the anterior segment with less tipping of the segme

Influence of the Inferior Turbinate on the Accuracy of Superior Maxillary Repositioning.

Notably, many studies have focused on the bony interference in the maxillary segment when performing maxillary superior repositioning; however, few reports have described the interference with the inferior nasal turbinate. Therefore, the authors aimed to retrospectively analyze the soft tissue or bone tissue volume of the inferior nasal turbinate and the accuracy of maxillary superior repositioning in Le Fort I osteotomy (LF1). The authors included 83 patients with facial deformities who underwent conventional LF1 (maxillary molar elevation between 4.0 and 6.0 mm) with/without bilateral sagitt

Use positional screws for Le Fort I osteotomy fixation: technical note.

In recent years, several studies related to fixation systems have been published, but few suggest any variations of the Le Fort I osteotomy technique, and the use of plates and screws placed along the canine and zygomatic pillar are common. The 20-year-old patient with Crouzon syndrome presented with severe hypoplasia of the maxillary, mandibular prognathism, and class III facial pattern. The patient underwent orthognathic surgery and high Le Fort I osteotomy with the fixation of eight positional screws. The aim of this paper is to describe a different technique for the fixation in high maxill

Orthognathic Treatment of Skeletal Class III Malocclusion with Severe Facial Asymmetry.

A 26-year, 9-month-old woman had chief complaints of mandibular protrusion and facial asymmetry. Extraoral examination indicated mandibular deviation to the left side, severe facial asymmetry, and a concave profile. Because the patient had a vertical maxillary height difference and an occlusal plane cant together with maxillary retrusion, a differential downgraft and advancement surgery with Lefort I osteotomy was planned. To correct the facial asymmetry and mandibular protrusion, concurrent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy was performed. Double-jaw surgical procedures, including maxillary a

Interdisciplinary treatment of an adult with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate.

Interdisciplinary treatment was used for an adult patient born with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. He had a severe maxillary deficiency with a wide cleft involving the alveolar and maxillary bone and palate. Reconstruction of the arches and occlusion in patients who missed the optimal treatment time is a difficult task for orthodontists. The clinical examination showed severe hypogenesis of the maxillary bone with a total crossbite. The maxillary dental arch was extremely narrow, and the maxillary incisors showed extensive caries caused by improper oral hygiene. Fixed and removable e

Correction of facial asymmetry associated with vertical maxillary excess and mandibular prognathism by combined orthognathic surgery and guiding templates and splints fabricated by rapid prototyping technique.

The facial asymmetry associated with vertical maxillary excess and mandibular prognathism is one of the more complicated types in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of combined orthognathic surgeries, together with guiding templates and splints fabricated by rapid prototyping technique, for the correction of facial asymmetry. Fourteen patients with facial asymmetry associated with vertical maxillary excess and mandibular prognathism were included. A maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy, a sagittal split ramus osteotomy on the shorter

[Rehabilitation of patients with asymmetrical maxillary deformations].

Observations of 31 patients aged 16-31 years (11 men and 20 women) with asymmetrical maxillary deformations showed that medical rehabilitation of this patient population requires a comprehensive orthodontic and surgical approach. Such an approach leads to good esthetic and functional results without relapses of the deformation. A modified method of maxillary osteotomy was used, taking into consideration the clinical manifestations of asymmetrical deformation. Effective surgical treatment implies thorough planning of the volume of intervention and reliable fixation of osteotomied maxillary comp

Long-term vertical stability of horseshoe osteotomy for the correction of large vertical excess of the maxilla, a retrospective assessment in 15 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Vertical stability after a Le Fort I (LF1) osteotomy with substantial upward movement can be compromised by the position and the volume of the inferior turbinate. A horseshoe (HS) osteotomy represents then an alternative as it preserves the hard palate and the intranasal volume. The aim of this study was to assess the vertical stability of the maxilla after HS osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent a HS osteotomy for the correction of long-face syndrome were retrospectively analyzed. The vertical stability was assessed on lateral cephalograms performed preopera
