[Endoscopic surgery for maxillary sinus inverted papilloma].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of endoscopic surgery for maxillary sinus inverted papilloma. METHODS: From 2000 to 2011, 50 patients with maxillary sinus inverted papilloma were treated with intranasal endoscopic surgery or combined approach. Among them, 39 cases were primary and 11 cases were recurrent, which included 17 patients with Krouse stage IIand 33 cases with Krouse stage III. Different surgical approaches were selected according to the range and positions of the lesions. One case with severe atypical hyperplasia received postoperative radiotherapy. RESULTS: All cases were follow

Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy for recalcitrant chronic maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) is an accepted alternative treatment for benign sinonasal neoplasms. Its use as definitive treatment for inflammatory disease of the maxillary sinus has yet to be adequately explored. We evaluate the efficacy of MEMM for chronic maxillary sinusitis and attempt to identify factors that predispose patients for failure. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 46 patients who underwent a total of 61 medial maxillectomies for recurrent chronic maxillary sinusitis from 2003 to 2010 was performed. Data was collected regarding patient demogr

Pleural fluid metastases of myoepithelial carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms, which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The tumor occurs mainly in the parotid gland followed by minor salivary glands and other body sites. As a result of their morphologic heterogeneity, they can be confused easily with many tumors. Awareness of their unique cytoarchitectural patterns and immunohistochemical profile is crucial for accurate identification. Herein, we report a rare case of a 51-year-old female patient with MECA of the maxillary sinu

[Sino-nasal undifferentiated carcinoma. Report of 1 case and literature review].

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas are rare neoplasms but highly malignant and aggressive. We are reporting the case of a 75 year-old female who had related recurrent epistaxis, facial pain and progressive nasal obstruction. The clinical data collected by the exploration joint to CT showed us the presence of a tumoral mass located in the right nasal fossa and homolateral maxillary sinus, eroding structures around. Its biopsy was informed as undifferentiated carcinoma and the patient was sent to Oncology Department, where she was treated by Radiotherapy (68 Gy) and weekly carboplatin during

Mycosis fungoides in the maxillary sinus and oral cavity: report of two cases.

Two cases of biopsy-proven mycosis fungoides are described. Case 1 appears to be the first reported instance of mycosis fungoides in the maxillary sinus. Case 2 involves persistently recurring lesions within the oral cavity, which appear to have been placed in a long-term remission by a full course of cobalt irradiation therapy to the entire oral cavity.

Encapsulated Sinonasal Schwannoma Mimicking an Antrochoanal Polyp.

Extracranial schwannomas are uncommon neoplasms of the sinonasal tract arising from peripheral nerve shealth. Mostly acapsulated on histology, but few cases of encapsulated schwannomas have been reported. Its symptoms are nonspecific and initial clinical diagnosis is frequently missed. We report a 13-year-old boy with a huge, encapsulated sinonasal schwannoma initially thought to be an antrochoanal polyp. Computed tomography scan demonstrated a huge irregularly shaped mildly enhancing isodense mass in the right nasal cavity with lateral extension to the ipsilateral maxillary sinus, superior ex

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the centrofacial region: a case report.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm with both eccrine and follicular differentiation and a high probability of perineural invasion of the centrofacial region. Given the histopathological features of this tumour, early diagnosis is essential for adequate management. This report refers to a case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the nasogenial region, with infiltration of the deep planes extending to the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. Surgical treatment involved wide demolition of the centrofacial region followed by reconstruction using four locoregional

Solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst in a patient with cyclic neutropenia.

A 16-year-old female with cyclic neutropenia (CN) was incidentally found to have a thoracic vertebral mass during the preoperative work-up for maxillary sinus surgery. An exploratory thoracotomy revealed a very vascular tumor involving T-10 and T-11 vertebral bodies. Gross total resection of the tumor was achieved. Pathology revealed a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst. This is a rare benign neoplasm of bone more commonly seen in the mandible and facial bones as well as involving the small tubular bones of the hands and feet. Because of its rarity, location, and an unknown association with

Cystic variant of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a benign, locally aggressive odontogenic neoplasm characterized by sheets and nests of epithelial cells with deeply eosinophilic or occasionally clear cytoplasm, calcifications, and eosinophilic amorphous material that stains positive for amyloid. Although many cases of CEOT are associated with impacted teeth and occasionally appear radiographically as dentigerous cysts, a true cystic variant has not been previously reported. We report a 15-year-old white male with a large cystic maxillary lesion that filled most of the left maxillary sinus. It

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma with metastasis to the extradural spine.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a rare and aggressive cancer of the sinonasal tract and is often characterized by intracranial invasion. However, SNUC rarely metastasizes to the spine. In this paper, we present a case of extradural metastasis and invasion of the adjacent spine by SNUC. A 42-year-old man presented to our hospital with two-month history of anosmia and nosebleeds. Imaging studies showed a neoplasm of the ethmoid sinus with extension into the anterior cranial fossa. The patient underwent resection of the carcinoma and began chemoradiotherapy. After completing chemor

Meta-analysis of treatment outcomes for sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: This study reviews the published outcomes regarding sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) since the initial description in 1986. This article attempts to (1) understand and better describe the benefit and survival advantages associated with using radiation, chemotherapy, and surgical treatment and (2) support the recommendations of a treatment regimen with current available data in the literature. DATA SOURCES: Published English-language literature. REVIEW METHODS: A PubMed search for articles related to SNUC, along with the bibliographies of those articles to avoid missing

Pseudocysts and retention cysts of the maxillary sinus.

The dome-shaped radiopaque shadows frequently seen on the floor of the maxillary sinus, and sometimes inaccurately referred to as antral mucoceles, appear to represent focal accumulation of inflammatory exudate that lifts the epithelial lining of the sinus and the periosteum away from the underlying bone to form the characteristically shaped structures. Their histologic appearance is therefore that of normal or inflamed maxillary sinus lining. There is no epithelium-lined cavity present beneath the sinus mucosa; consequently, the term pseudocyst of the maxillary sinus is advocated. Less common

[Spontaneous bone regeneration following ceratocystic odontogenic tumor].

A patient presents with a keratocystic odontogenic tumour of the left maxillary sinus. In computed tomography scans, extensive pressure-induced osseous atrophy of the sinus walls is detected. Endoscopic cystectomy of the tumour was performed, with subsequent clinical follow-up. A second computed tomography scan revealed almost complete regeneration of the sinus walls. Where spontaneous regeneration of osseous structures is possible, restraint should be exercised when assessing indications for bony reconstruction during initial conservative surgery such as enucleation.
