Public health concerns about social media use (SMU) have generated interest in the development of interventions capable of reducing SMU. In this study, we replicated and extended Stinson and Dallery (2023) by evaluating the effects of a contingency management with alternative activity selection intervention on SMU and engagement in alternative activities with four college students. Results from the current study replicate the findings of Stinson and Dallery. Reductions in SMU were observed, but no discernable influence on engagement in alternative activities occurred during the intervention ph

Hostile people tend to view the world as a hostile place. Although there are individual differences in hostile world-views, situational factors can also play a role. For example, scenes of violence in the mass media might influence people to view the world as a hostile place. This meta-analysis aggregates, for the first time, all studies that have investigated the link between exposure to violent media and hostile appraisals (e.g., perceiving the ambiguous actions by others as aggressive actions). This meta-analysis included 37 independent studies involving 10,410 participants. The results sho

The analysis of exposure is a necessary feature of epidemiological studies. In the case of low-risk cancer agents, the examination of potential exposure should follow a sequence that prioritizes the major media and routes of concern. This will minimize the misclassification of exposure and the failure to identify important co-factors, e.g. contamination in other media, etc. The manuscript describes specific components of exposure analysis and provides examples that pertain to single and multimedia exposure problems. The approach is examined by using the Total Human Environmental Exposure Study…

The Generation End Game (GEG) policy in Malaysia aims to establish a smoke-free generation and has prompted substantial media attention. This qualitative cross-sectional study employed a netnographic approach to analyse Malaysian online news articles published between January 2022 and January 2024 in response to the policy. Data from news portals were collected via NCapture and analysed in NVivo using thematic content analysis. A total of 441 news articles were analysed and categorised into three timeframes: the initial announcement, the official announcement and the removal of the GEG provisi

BACKGROUND: Understanding social media use among rural adolescents is important because they are a geographically and socially isolated population which may impact how they use social media and affect the impacts of use. The goal of this study was to systematically review and evaluate the literature on rural US adolescent social media use. Specifically, what is known about their social media use, amount and type of use, and the associations between social media use and health outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on seven databases: PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycINFO (ProQuest), W

BACKGROUND: Intestinal exposure to gliadin leads to zonulin upregulation and consequent disassembly of intercellular tight junctions and increased intestinal permeability. We aimed to study response to gliadin exposure, in terms of barrier function and cytokine secretion, using intestinal biopsies obtained from four groups: celiac patients with active disease (ACD), celiac patients in remission (RCD), non-celiac patients with gluten sensitivity (GS) and non-celiac controls (NC).
METHODS: Ex-vivo human duodenal biopsies were mounted in microsnapwells and luminally incubated with either gliadin

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been posing a substantial challenge to human survival and well-being, which rely on the actions and behaviors of individuals. It is essential that accurate information is distributed; however, misinformation has been spread via social media. Consequently, the resulting panic has to be addressed while putting essential public health measures in place. It is also important to explore the link between the social media exposure and well-being. Therefore, in the current study, we aimed to identify the levels of anxiety, depression, and social iso…

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic received widespread media coverage due to its novelty, an early lack of data, and the rapid rise in deaths and cases. This excessive coverage created a secondary "infodemic" that was considered to be a serious public and mental health problem by the World Health Organization and the international scientific community. The infodemic particularly affected older individuals, specifically those who are vulnerable to misinformation due to political positions, low interpretive and critical analysis capacity, and limited technical-scientific knowledge. Thus, it is im

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with frequent (versus infrequent) social media use display higher cannabis use prevalence. This study examined associations of social media use frequency with pro-cannabis attitudes, an actionable intervention target.
METHODS: Youth aged 13-17 in Oklahoma, United States completed an online, cross-sectional survey (March-October 2023) measuring social media use frequency (0-1.5 vs. 1.5+ hours/day), pro-cannabis attitudes (e.g., "cannabis is an effective treatment for mental health problems"), past-month cannabis use (yes/no), and individual characteristics (e.g., age, to

OBJECTIVE: Research in the area of bystander intervention in the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving (AID) has mostly focused on the influence of existing factors (such as status or relationships) on the likelihood of intervening and has relied mostly on samples of college-age students. It remains unknown whether exposure to external stimuli, such as that of mass media marketing, has the ability to influence bystander intervention and whether differential tendencies to intervene hold true for the larger population. This study sought to explore the influence of external stimuli, in the form

Social media consumption can transmit normative cues that shape health behaviors, yet how different types of normative information on social media jointly influence perceived norms and behavioral intentions remains underexplored. This experimental study (N = 500) examined the separate and combined effects of descriptive and injunctive norm cues embedded in social media videos and comments on perceived norms and intentions to use aggressive communication in traffic-related interpersonal violence, which is a growing global health concern. We then examined prior social exposure as a boundary cond

Digital media have become a central part of children's and adolescents' daily lives, with increasing usage time and decreasing age of first exposure in recent years. While digital technologies offer opportunities for social participation, access to information, education, and therapeutic support, they are also associated with several risks to mental health. These include problematic use patterns, cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content and hazardous contacts as well as commercial exploitation through manipulative design practices ("dark patterns"). This evidence review summarizes current re

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling sponsorship is increasingly visible on social media, yet it remains unclear how it contributes to the perceived normalization of gambling. This study explores whether sponsored gambling posts endorsed on social media affect young adults' perceived descriptive and injunctive gambling norms.
METHODS: A 2 (brand type: gambling vs. control) by 2 (source: social media influencer vs. brand) between-subjects experiment (N = 369, aged 18-20) was conducted.
RESULTS: Exposure to sponsored gambling posts increased the perception of how frequently a typical student gambles.

In this article we examine media use and its relationship to adolescent overweight/obesity and adolescent eating disorders. We consider the potential mechanisms through which exposure to media during adolescence (both amount of time and choice of content) might exacerbate unhealthy eating and physical activity patterns. We consider strategies that health care providers can use to identify problematic media use and suggestions they might offer to adolescents and their parents for ways to make media a more positive agent in young people's healthy development.

BACKGROUND: Digital media increasingly shape how populations encounter large-scale traumatic events, enabling real-time exposure to uncensored graphic content among individuals who are not directly exposed. However, whether this form of indirect exposure to the trauma relates to posttraumatic stress responses, particularly in the wake of collective, large-scale trauma, remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We studied a large cohort of individuals in the first months following a collective trauma, in which a significant portion reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related t

INTRODUCTION: Evidence is consistent with increased screen viewing time among children and adolescents, and anticipation at the age at which children interact with media devices. Incorrect use of technology, as well as overuse, may lead to serious consequences. This study aims to revise scientific international literature and to describe the potential eye risks correlated to screen viewing time in the pediatric age.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of the literature was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using the search terms "media device" and "eye" with the filter "age 0-18"
