Posttraumatic mid-facial pain and Meige's syndrome relieved by pressure on the nasion and retrocollis.

A 42-year-old farmer developed persistent mid-facial segmental pain and Meige's syndrome several months after suffering facial trauma and a fracture of the nose. He was not afflicted by systemic ailments, had no family history of movement disorder and no history of exposure to neuroleptic drugs. He was capable of suppressing his facial pain by performing a ritual that included forcefully tilting his head backwards, lowering of his eyelids and applying strong pressure to his nasion. Exceptionally dystonic movements and elaborate behavioral rituals may serve as a mechanism of pain suppression.

Lidocaine tape (Penles) reduces the pain of botulinum toxin injection for Meige syndrome.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of lidocaine tape in reducing pain during botulinum toxin injection. DESIGN: Randomized double-blind study. METHOD: Six men and four women with a diagnosis of Meige syndrome undergoing botulinum toxin injection were recruited. Lidocaine tape was applied to the eyelid skin of a randomly selected eye and placebo tape to the other eye. Pain during botulinum toxin injection was evaluated subjectively by a visual analogue scale. Side effects were also monitored. RESULTS: Mean subjective pain both on puncturing skin and on injection in the lidocaine group was sig

Treatment selections of 239 patients with blepharospasm and Meige syndrome over 11 years.

BACKGROUND: A retrospective review of 239 patients with benign essential blepharospasm and Meige syndrome was performed in order to determine patients' long term treatment preferences. METHODS: Of 239 patients evaluated, 228 received local injections of botulinum toxin, type A, into the eyelid and facial musculature over 11 years. RESULTS: Of 228 patients, 202 (72.1%) were still treated with botulinum toxin, type A. Eighteen patients (6.9%) no longer received botulinum toxin injections and sought no other treatment. Five patients (2.2%) had apparent remission of their disease after injection

Meige syndrome (blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia) after long-term neuroleptic therapy.

Two patients developed either blepharospasm or blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia following chronic therapy with chlorpromazine, haloperidol, or thioridazine. In one patient, appearance of the movement disorder was associated with neuroleptic withdrawal, and in the other patient, the movement disorder began while neuroleptic therapy continued. Because of the age of one patient and the severe intermittent psychosis in the other, these Meige-like symptoms were attributed to chronic neuroleptic use rather than to spontaneously occurring Meige syndrome. The symptoms occurring as part of a tardiv

Hemothorax resulting from hemorrhagic degeneration of giant uterine leiomyomata: A rare variant of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome.

Though rare, hemothorax can occur without trauma, coagulopathy, or apparent vascular injury. Similar to the proposed mechanism of Meigs' syndrome or hepatic hydrothorax, small diaphragmatic defects may allow peritoneal fluid to traverse the diaphragm into the pleural space. While typically this is associated with transudative pleural effusions, there have been case reports of hemoperitoneum crossing the diaphragm into the pleural space. Here, we present a case in which multiple giant leiomyomata with hemorrhagic necrosis led to hemoperitoneum that translocated across the diaphragm into the ple

Clear-cell borderline tumor with pseudo-Meigs' syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian clear-cell borderline tumor is a rare epithelial tumor that predominantly has been identified in post-menopausal patients. Patients may become symptomatic due to mass effect, and treatment requires complete surgical excision. However, development of ascites and pleural effusions associated with clear-cell borderline tumor has not yet been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the experience of a 68-year-old patient with complaints of increasing abdominal swelling, difficulty breathing, productive cough, and an abdominal mass. Physical exam was most notable for a large mob

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to breast cancer with ovarian metastasis: a case report and literature review.

Ovarian metastasis of breast cancer with pseudo-Meigs' syndrome (PMS) is extremely rare. Only four cases of PMS secondary to breast cancer with ovarian metastasis have been reported to date. In this report, we present the fifth case of PMS caused by ovarian metastasis of breast cancer. On the 2nd of July 2019, a 53-year-old woman presented to our hospital with complaints of abdominal distension, irregular vaginal bleeding, and chest distress. Color Doppler ultrasound examination revealed a mass approximately 109×89 mm in size in the right adnexal area, accompanied by multiple uterine fibroids

Pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS) in chronic lupus peritonitis: a case report with review of literature.

Gastrointestinal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) usually occurs in the form of mesenteric vasculitis, protein-losing enteropathy, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, and pancreatitis. We describe a 23-year-old female, a known case of SLE presented with significant ascites and pleural effusion. Further evaluation showed elevated CA-125 levels without evidence of malignancy. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine, and azathioprine resulting in the resolution of ascites in 2 weeks. The triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and increased CA-125 is known as pseu

Ovarian Low-Grade Mucinous Tumor Combined with Pseudo-Meigs' Syndrome: Report of Two Cases and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Pseudo-Meigs syndrome (PMS) is a rare condition in which the primary tumor is most commonly ovarian teratoma, struma ovarii, ovarian metastatic tumor, or leiomyoma. Cases of PMS associated with ovarian borderline mucinous tumors or early-stage mucinous cystadenocarcinomas are exceedingly rare, with only two reported to date. CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents the cases of two young women in 30s who sought medical attention due to progressively worsening dyspnea or abdominal distension. Preoperative serum tumor marker levels and imaging suggested advanced ovarian cancer; howe…

Pseudo-Pseudo Meigs' Syndrome in a 40-Year-Old Woman Without a Prior Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Diagnosis.

Pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS), also known as Tjalma syndrome, is an exceptionally rare condition marked by pleural effusion, ascites, and elevated CA-125 levels, usually in the context of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) without any associated ovarian tumors. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with a four-month history of fatigue, nausea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and pleural effusion. Initial diagnostic workup revealed ascites, elevated CA-125 levels, and pleural effusions, with no evidence of malignancy. Notably, the patient had no prior history of SLE. Compr

Pelvic mass, ascites, hydrothorax: a malignant or benign condition? Meigs syndrome with high levels of CA 125.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal-pelvic mass, ascites and pleural effusion are suggestive of malignant metastatic ovarian cancer. This triad is also present in a rare benign condition called Meigs syndrome. Rarely this condition is associated with an increased CA 125 level. CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman with a history of abdominal pain underwent an ultrasound (US) examination and a chest X-ray. The imaging revealed the presence of a large pelvic mass and ascites with a monolateral pleural effusion and a high level of the tumor marker CA 125. The patient underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy, sal…

Deciphering the puzzle: a case report of Tjalma syndrome (pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome) with profoundly elevated CA-125 and pleural effusion.

Elevated CA-125 levels, polyserous effusions (such as pleural effusion, ascites, etc.) in young women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may signal pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS), after excluding other causes. We describe a 32-year-old SLE patient with recurrent bilateral pleural effusions and unexplained hypercalcemia for 10 months. Extensive evaluations revealed no infections or tumors. Cytokine analysis showed elevated interleukin (IL) levels, especially IL-6 in pleural effusion. Treatment with immunosuppressive therapy resulted in reduced cancer antigen (CA) 125 levels and decre

Analysis of risk factors for Meige syndrome and construction and validation of a clinical prediction nomogram model.

BACKGROUND: Meige syndrome (MS) is a craniocervical dystonia characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. Its etiology remains unclear, and clinical diagnosis is often delayed. Currently, there is a lack of effective risk prediction tools, making early intervention challenging. OBJECTIVE: To systematically analyze the risk factors for MS and develop and validate a clinical prediction nomogram model based on clinical indicators to facilitate early risk assessment. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted, enrolling 450 confirmed MS patients and 450 controls from

CT-guided radiofrequency ablation of facial and mandibular nerves in the treatment of compound Meige's syndrome.

This retrospective study examined the clinical outcomes and complications in 6 cases of compound Meige's syndrome, presenting with blepharospasm and masticatory muscle spasm, following treatment with CT-guided radiofrequency ablation targeting bilateral facial nerves and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. After the operation, the symptoms of eyelid spasm and masticatory muscle spasm resolved, but mild facial paralysis and numbness of mandibular nerve innervation persisted. Follow-up for 4-28 months showed that the symptoms of facial paralysis resolved within 2-5 (3.17 ± 0.94) months

Altered coupling of resting-state cerebral blood flow and functional connectivity in Meige syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Meige syndrome (MS) is an adult-onset segmental dystonia disease, mainly manifested as blepharospasm and involuntary movement caused by dystonic dysfunction of the oromandibular muscles. The changes of brain activity, perfusion and neurovascular coupling in patients with Meige syndrome are hitherto unknown. METHODS: Twenty-five MS patients and thirty age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) were prospectively recruited in this study. All the participants underwent resting-state arterial spin labeling and blood oxygen level-dependent examinations on a 3.0 T MR scanner. The meas

Interleaving programming in pallidal deep brain stimulation improves outcomes in a patient with Meige syndrome.

We present the effectiveness of interleaving programming in pallidal deep brain stimulation in a patient with Meige syndrome. This patient's symptoms were initially inadequately relieved by conventional programming methods. Then, we switched to the interleaving programming strategy, which produced an individual electrical density and improved her symptoms significantly.

[A comparative study of the catecholamine content of the blood and urine in patients with facial paraspasm (Meige's syndrome)].

Catecholamines and DOPA excretion and televant levels in blood were measured in 17 patients with facial paraspasm and in 24 healthy subjects. The findings gave evidence for sympathetic-adrenal system adrenal activation and more intensive catecholamine metabolism in patients, especially marked in those with generalised facial hyperkinesia.

Complete remission of neuroleptic-induced Meige's syndrome by botulinum toxin treatment: a case report.

A botulinum A toxin injection has beneficial effects on patients suffering from facial and cervical spastic disorders. However, its effect almost completely disappears within three months. We have reported a case of a 23-year-old schizophrenic patient with severe neuroleptic-induced Meige's syndrome in whom botulinum toxin treatment exerted a marked effect which lasted more than 15 months after the final injection of botulinum toxin in spite of continuous neuroleptic medication. It is concluded that botulinum can be recommended as a treatment of choice in neuroleptic-induced Meige's syndrome.
