Multiple parietal pathways are associated with rTMS-induced hippocampal network enhancement and episodic memory changes.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the inferior parietal cortex (IPC) increases resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the hippocampus with the precuneus and other posterior cortical areas and causes proportional improvement of episodic memory. The anatomical pathway(s) responsible for the propagation of these effects from the IPC is unknown and may not be direct. In order to assess the relative contributions of candidate pathways from the IPC to the MTL via the parahippocampal cortex and precuneus, to the effects of rTMS on rsFC and memory improvement, we used dif

Contribution of left supramarginal and angular gyri to episodic memory encoding: An intracranial EEG study.

The role of the left ventral lateral parietal cortex (VPC) in episodic memory is hypothesized to include bottom-up attentional orienting to recalled items, according to the dual-attention model (Cabeza et al., 2008). However, its role in memory encoding could be further clarified, with studies showing both positive and negative subsequent memory effects (SMEs). Furthermore, few studies have compared the relative contributions of sub-regions in this functionally heterogeneous area, specifically the anterior VPC (supramarginal gyrus/BA40) and the posterior VPC (angular gyrus/BA39), on a within-s

Examining the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on human episodic memory with machine learning.

We aimed to replicate a published effect of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS)-induced recognition enhancement over the human ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and analyse the data with machine learning. We investigated effects over an adjacent region, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In total, we analyzed data from 97 participants after exclusions. We found weak or absent effects over the VLPFC and DLPFC. We conducted machine learning studies to examine the effects of semantic and phonetic features on memorization, which revealed no effect of VLPFC tDCS on the ori

Does tDCS over prefrontal cortex improve episodic memory retrieval? Potential importance of time of day.

We report 4 experiments aiming to replicate and extend the finding that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex after encoding and just prior to retrieval improves accuracy on an episodic recollection task. Our first 3 experiments failed to replicate the tDCS effect in planned analyses, but post-hoc analyses uncovered tDCS effects on recollection accuracy during morning sessions. To further investigate, Experiment 4 randomly assigned participants to morning or afternoon sessions. As predicted, tDCS (compared to sham stimulation) improved recoll

Deficits in episodic memory are related to uncontrolled eating in a sample of healthy adults.

Despite a substantial amount of animal data linking deficits in memory inhibition to the development of overeating and obesity, few studies have investigated the relevance of memory inhibition to uncontrolled eating in humans. Further, although memory for recent eating has been implicated as an important contributor to satiety and energy intake, the possibility that variations in episodic memory relate to individual differences in food intake control has been largely neglected. To examine these relationships, we recruited ninety-three adult subjects to attend a single lab session where we asse

Elevated levels of serum cholesterol are associated with better performance on tasks of episodic memory.

We examined how serum cholesterol, an established risk factor for cerebrovascular disease (CVD), relates to cognitive function in healthy middle-older aged individuals with no neurologic or CVD history. A complete lipid panel was obtained from a cohort of one hundred twenty individuals, ages 43-85, who also underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological examination. In order to reduce the number of variables and empirically identify broad cognitive domains, scores from neuropsychological tests were submitted into a factor analysis. This analysis revealed three explainable factors: Memory, Execut

Characterising neural signatures of successful aging: Electrophysiological correlates of preserved episodic memory in older age.

While aging is associated with a gradual decline in memory, substantial preservation of function is observed in certain individuals and dissecting this heterogeneity is paramount to understanding successful aging. A cohort of elderly individuals were classified according to their level of memory preservation and administered a test of episodic memory in which participants were cued to learn or simply read each word and then to identify previously presented items in a delayed recognition phase. Mathematical modelling revealed that relatively preserved memory function was specifically linked to

Prospective and episodic memory in relation to hippocampal volume in adults with spina bifida myelomeningocele.

The present study examined prospective and episodic memory in relation to age, functional independence, and hippocampal volume in younger to middle-aged adults with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) and typically developing (TD) adults. Prospective and episodic memory, as well as hippocampal volume, was reduced in adults with SBM relative to TD adults. Neither memory performance nor hippocampal volume showed greater decrements in older adults. Lower hippocampal volume was associated with reduced prospective memory in adults with SBM, and this relation was specific to the hippocampus and not

Brain activation patterns during visual episodic memory processing among first-degree relatives of schizophrenia subjects.

Episodic memory deficits are proposed as a potential intermediate phenotype of schizophrenia. We examined deficits in visual episodic memory and associated brain activation differences among early course schizophrenia (n=22), first-degree relatives (n=16) and healthy controls without personal or family history of psychotic disorders (n=28). Study participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging on a 3T scanner while performing visual episodic memory encoding and retrieval task. We examined in-scanner behavioral performance evaluating response time and accuracy of performance. Whole

Abnormal insula functional network is associated with episodic memory decline in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

Abnormalities of functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) recently have been reported in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other psychiatric diseases. As such, these abnormalities may be epiphenomena instead of playing a causal role in AD progression. To date, few studies have investigated specific brain networks, which extend beyond the DMN involved in the early AD stages, especially in aMCI. The insula is one site affected by early pathological changes in AD and is a crucial hub of the human brain networks. Currently, we exp

Episodic memory in dementia: Characteristics of new learning that differentiate Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases.

Differences in the memory characteristics of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) were investigated with tests that assess learning and retention of words, line-drawn objects, and locations. Large groups of AD, HD, and PD patients were administered the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) and the Hopkins Board (HB). Eight learning and memory measures were subjected to discriminant function analysis. A 91% classification accuracy was achieved for the separation of cortical and subcortical dementias and 79% accuracy for the disc

[Self-reference effect and episodic memory in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease: myth or reality?].

The Self is defined as a dynamic structure of self-referent-cognitive processes and a set of multidimensional representations stored in memory. This paper aims to explore the links between the Self and memorization of information, thus we propose to review the Self-reference effect (SRE) on memory processes and its neural basis in young and older adults. The literature reports a strong benefit from self-referencing on the encoding and retrieval processes in episodic memory. Indeed, the individuals demonstrate a better retention of information previously processed in relation with their preexis

Episodic memory in adults with autistic spectrum disorders: recall for self- versus other-experienced events.

People with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) have difficulties in recalling recently experienced events, which is dependent upon intact functioning of several aspects of 'self awareness'. The current study examined impaired episodic recall in ASD and its relationship to specific impairments in aspects of 'self awareness'. Between-group (participants with learning disabilities with and without autistic spectrum disorder) experimental design examining free and cued recall of table-top activities that were either self-experienced by participants or observed being performed by the experimenter. Exploring Memory Systems After Pediatric Posterior Fossa Tumor: From Memory Profile Comparisons in Nonirradiated Versus Irradiated Patients to Episodic Memory Tests Capable of Detecting Radiation-induced Hippocampal Damage.

AIMS: Pediatric posterior fossa tumor (PFT) survivors experience long-term cognitive sequelae, including memory disorders, for which irradiation is one of the main risk factors. The aims of the present study were to (1) explore the profile of impairment in episodic, semantic, working and procedural memory systems in irradiated versus nonirradiated PFT survivors, and (2) test whether an autobiographical questionnaire and a two-phase ecological test (Epireal) assessing episodic memory are more sensitive to radiation-induced hippocampal damage than commonly used tests. Relevance of a Novel Circuit-Level Model of Episodic Memories to Alzheimer's Disease.

The medial temporal lobe memory system has long been identified as the brain region showing the first histopathological changes in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the functional decline observed in patients also points to a loss of function in this brain area. Nonetheless, the exact identity of the neurons and networks that undergo deterioration has not been determined so far. A recent study has identified the entorhinal and hippocampal neural circuits responsible for encoding new episodic memories. Using this novel model we describe the elements of the episodic memory network that are esp

Emotional memory in bipolar disorder: Impact of multiple episodes and childhood trauma.

BACKGROUND: Emotional memory is a critical amygdala-dependent cognitive function characterized by enhanced memory for emotional events coupled with retrograde amnesia. Our study aims to assess the influence of bipolar disorder (BD), trauma, and the number of mood episodes on emotional memory. METHODS: 53 subjects (33 euthymic patients with BD and 20 healthy controls) answered a clinical assessment, childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ), and an emotional memory test composed of lists of nouns, including neutral words, one emotional (E), one preceding (E-1) and one following word (E + 1). Retrograde Amnesia for Episodic and Semantic Memories in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Retrograde amnesia (RA), which includes loss of memory for past personal events (autobiographical RA) and for acquired knowledge (semantic RA), has been largely documented in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, previous studies have produced controversial results particularly concerning the temporal extent of memory impairment. Here we investigated whether, with the onset of hippocampal pathology, age of memory acquisition and retrieval frequency play different roles in modulating the progressive loss of semantic and episodic contents of retrograde memory respecti

Generalized dissociative amnesia: episodic, semantic and procedural memories lost and found.

OBJECTIVE: This review tests Ribot's classic twofold categorization of generalized amnesia (GA) into Type I, total loss of episodic memory, and Type II, additional more or less extensive loss of semantic and/or procedural memory. It also explores his law of regression, according to which, cast in modern terms, recovery of lost procedural and semantic memories precedes recovery of episodic memory, as well as reported aetiological factors. METHOD: Clinically and formally assessed cases of GA, published since 1845, were surveyed and further analysed. RESULTS: Over and above authentic episodic m

Long-term episodic memory alterations and the role of perceived stress in post-COVID-19 condition.

Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) is frequently associated with cognitive impairments, but the integrity of long-term episodic memory remains poorly understood. This study examined immediate, short-term, and very long-term episodic memory in individuals with PCC and evaluated whether emotional disturbances predict long-term recognition outcomes. Forty-one participants (30 PCC; 11 non-PCC) completed a verbal cued-recall task and an immersive virtual reality free-recall object-location memory (OLM) task immediately after learning and the following day. Nine months later, three recognition tasks (ver

Longitudinal evaluation of hippocampal subfields volumes and episodic memory in breast cancer patients and healthy controls.

Despite previous reports of hippocampal alterations in breast cancer patients, the structural evolution of hippocampal subfields in relationship with memory remains to be characterized in this population. We aimed to measure hippocampal subfield volumes and their links with memory performances before and after chemotherapy in breast cancer patients compared to healthy controls. Forty-two middle aged women were evaluated, including 19 patients assessed before (T1), one-month (T2) and one-year (T3) after chemotherapy, and 23 controls assessed at T1 and T3.
