From Foundational Caregiving to Maternal Eudaimonic Well-Being: The Role of Parenting and Interaction Competence.

Background/Objectives: The transition to early parenthood is a pivotal phase influencing maternal mental health. Although parenting competence may support maternal adjustment, it is often treated as a unitary construct. This study examined the associations among foundational caregiving competence, developmental parenting and interaction competence, and eudaimonic parental well-being in first-time mothers. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 372 first-time mothers whose young children attended licensed infant daycare centers in northern Taiwan. Participants completed questionna

Psychological needs fulfillment and perinatal well-being among low-SES individuals: a mixed methods investigation.

Poor perinatal mental health is associated with deleterious effects and individuals with low socioeconomic status (SES) are at elevated risk. Fortifying multi-level resources of low-SES pregnant individuals to boost their well-being is a crucial step toward achieving equity in perinatal health. The purpose of this project was to explore what patterns of resources supported well-being among low-SES pregnant individuals in Colorado. In a prospective mixed methods cohort study, 23 low-SES pregnant individuals completed surveys and interviews. Participants were separated into 3 subgroups based on

Treating against a stated refusal: The ethics of substitute decision-making when a patient cannot capably refuse.

Decision-making capacity in health care refers to a person's ability to understand information relevant to a decision, appreciate how the decision affects them, make a choice, and communicate that choice. Capacity is essential in ethics and professional nursing practice because it forms the basis of informed consent. Nurses encounter various medical conditions, such as dementia, that can contribute to changes in cognitive abilities and result in diminished capacity. However, having a cognitive condition such as dementia does not necessarily mean a person lacks the capacity to make a specific d

Forensic Neuropsychological Foundations in Competency to Stand Trial Evaluations.

Neuropsychological assessment can play a vital role in competency to stand trial (CST) evaluations. This article provides an overview of the brain and behavior-based conditions that may impact an individual's ability to participate in their legal proceedings, as well as the relevant legal parameters that guide these types of forensic mental health evaluations. Circumstances that may warrant the involvement of a neuropsychologist in these evaluations are reviewed. For example, neuropsychologists' expertise with validity testing, as well as their specialized knowledge of cognition, is useful fro

"Footprints in the Bathroom": The Role of Spirituality in Patient Diagnosis.

Lucy is a 12-year-old Latina whose mother brought her to the pediatric clinic for help with her anxiety symptoms, "hearing voices," and episodes of "spacing out." Lucy did not cry at birth secondary to vocal cord paralysis and still has the tracheostomy performed at a few days of life. In addition to her neonatal intensive care unit stay, she has been hospitalized for pneumonia. Her mother says she is "sickly" and has a weak immune system due to her asthma symptoms. Lucy also experiences somatic complaints related to gastroesophageal reflux and constipation.Lucy is described as being "in anoth

[Euthanasia in advanced dementia: directive is useful].

The Dutch Euthanasia Act states that an advance directive can replace an actual request for euthanasia in cases in which a patient has become unable to make autonomous decisions. In Euthanasia and the Severely Demented, I agree with Keizer that the severely demented can suffer unbearably, but contrary to Keizer I do not believe that it is impossible to state in advance the conditions under which one would not wish to go on living any longer. Consequently, euthanasia can be permissible even in patients with late-stage dementia, provided that the other due-care criteria are met. Permissibility b

Becoming expert and understanding mental illness.

In the process of becoming an expert in the mental health field the newcomer, through reading, lectures, and supervision, is taught what to notice and how to structure and conceptualize that information. A less recognized part of this learning process is that the newcomer is also taught, explicitly or implicitly, what not to notice, what not to pay attention to. Much of the subjectivity of the newcomer and of the patients and clients he or she sees is pushed, purposely or not, out of the way and is then lost to view. Although these experiences may help the newcomer survive and manage in a comp

Involuntary sterilization of persons with mental retardation: an ethical analysis.

Legitimate concerns on the part of parents and guardians may lead to requests for sterilization of a mentally retarded person in their care. At the same time, mentally retarded persons must be protected from actions that do not serve their best interests. This paper will review the history of involuntary sterilization in the United States and evaluate the ethical arguments that are relevant to decisions about involuntary sterilization. While other, less permanent forms of contraception might be acceptable, involuntary sterilization ought not be performed on mentally retarded persons who retain

Updating Winterwerp with Rooman to add a requirement for 'Real therapeutic measures' to legal criteria for admission without consent in psychiatry.

Admission without consent and treatment without consent are topics of prolonged discussion throughout the history of psychiatry. These practices raise significant issues pertaining to human rights to liberty, bodily integrity, and treatment. Balancing rights is always challenging, especially when people lack decision-making capacity owing to the impact of mental illness. In 1979, the European Court of Human Rights outlined criteria required to justify lawful admission without consent owing to mental disorder in Winterwerp v. the Netherlands. These criteria were: (a) a competent national author

Frailty, Caregiver Burden, and Depressive Symptoms Among Family Caregivers of Community-Dwelling Frail Older Adults: The Moderated Mediating Role of Social Support, Mastery, and Competence.

PURPOSE: Primary stressors, such as frailty and caregiver burden, are predominant contributors to caregivers' depressive symptoms, but mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unknown. METHOD: Path analysis was used to test whether mastery and competence mediate the effect of frailty and caregiver burden on depressive symptoms, and whether social support moderates these pathways among 464 caregivers of frail older adults in China. RESULTS: Mastery mediated the relationship between physical frailty and depressive symptoms, and competence mediated the relationship between caregiver bur

Pilot evaluation of an educational and lived experience training program on ketogenic metabolic therapy in mental health care for health care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Serious mental illness imposes a substantial burden. Pharmacologic treatments remain only partially effective and are associated with significant side effects, highlighting the need for novel treatment approaches. Ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) is emerging as an intervention for serious mental illness, with a growing evidence base and strong patient interest. A critical barrier to KMT implementation is the lack of health care professional (HCP) competence and readiness to discuss KMT with patients with serious mental illness. Existing training does not adequately address HCP com

Learning from facial expressions in individuals with Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Despite high levels of social engagement, the social competence of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) is frequently compromised. This descriptive study explores the ability of young people with WS to learn from facial expressions when provided as a source of feedback for their actions. METHOD: Using a novel task, the ability to interpret facial expressions and adapt behaviour after receiving feedback in the form of happy or angry faces was assessed in 12 participants with WS aged between 10 and 28 years and with a mean nonverbal mental age of 6.5 years, and in typically devel
