Natural incorporation of mercury in bone.

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element that causes bone defects and malformations. Structure and surface analyses using quantitative x-ray diffraction using the Rietveld method, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and nanodiffraction analyses, and Fourier-Transformed Infrared spectroscopy showed that bone enriched naturally with Hg (≤ 2.3 %) contained Hg3PO4 [(Hg2)3(PO4)2] and HgO. Bone [mostly as apatite, verified as carboxyapatite Ca10(PO4)4(CO3)3(OH)2(s)] and cinnabar (HgS) dissolved releasing Hg+ (existing as dimer Hg22+) and PO43-, both of which became immobilized as (Hg2)3(P…

Intestinal Methylation and Demethylation of Mercury.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant, which is linked with different diseases. The methylation of Hg and demethylation of methylmercury (MeHg) in the environment were extensively studied and summarized; however, the transformation of Hg in the intestine is less presented. In this review, the research progress and the perspectives on the intestinal transformation of Hg were discussed. Studies found that MeHg could be formed when exposed to inorganic Hg by the gut microbiota in aquatic organisms, terrestrial invertebrates, and mammals, etc. hgcAB genes could be used as indicators for predicting Hg…

Determination of mercury in hair of children.

Although high or repeated exposure to different forms of Hg can have serious health consequences, the most important toxicity risk for humans is as methylmercury (MeHg) which exposure is mainly through consumption of fish. Generally, more than the 80% of Hg in hair is as MeHg, which is taken up by hair follicles as MeHg-cysteine complexes. In this context, hair samples were collected from 200 children (7 years) living in a coastal site in the North-East (A) of Italy and from 299 children (6-11 years) living in a urban area of South of Italy (B) to determine the levels of MeHg. Considering the …

Binary polyazides of cadmium and mercury.

Following our interest in binary element-nitrogen compounds we report here on the synthesis and comprehensive characterization (M.p., IR/Raman, elemental analysis, (14)N/(133)Cd/(199)Hg NMR) of tri- and tetraazido cadmate and mercurate anions [E(N3)(2+n)](n-) (E = Cd, Hg; n=1, 2) in a series of [Ph4P](+) and [PNP](+) ([PNP](+) = bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium) salts. The azide/chloride exchange in CH2Cl2 as well as the formation of tetrazolate salts in CH3CN solutions of the polyazido mercurates were investigated. Single crystal X-ray structures of all new compounds, and for comparison [Ph4P][

The toxicology of mercury and its compounds.

A concentrated review on the toxicology of inorganic mercury together with an extensive review on the neurotoxicology of methylmercury is presented. The challenges of using inorganic mercury in dental amalgam are reviewed both regarding the occupational exposure and the possible health problems for the dental patients. The two remaining "mysteries" of methylmercury neurotoxicology are also being reviewed; the cellular selectivity and the delayed onset of symptoms. The relevant literature on these aspects has been discussed and some suggestions towards explaining these observations have been pr…

Mercury and methylmercury bioaccessibility in swordfish.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) in swordfish (Xiphias gladius) present a food safety problem for many countries. This study analyses total Hg (t-Hg) concentrations in 27 samples of swordfish marketed in Spain in 2005 and in their bioaccessible fractions (soluble concentration in gastrointestinal medium), obtained after applying an in vitro digestion method. Methylmercury (MeHg) was also determined in the bioaccessible fractions. t-Hg concentrations in the samples were 0.41-2.11 mg kg(-1) wet weight, with a mean of 0.96 +/- 0.47 mg kg(-1) wet weight. A total of 37% of the samples exceeded the Hg…

Mercury bioaccumulation in a stream network.

Mercury (Hg) contamination is common in stream and river ecosystems, but factors mediating Hg cycling in the flowing waters are much less understood than inthe lakes and wetlands. In this study, we examined the spatial patterns of methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the dominant groups of aquatic insect larvae across a network of streams (drainage area ranging from 0.5 to 150 km2) in northern California during summer baseflow conditions. We found that, with the exception of water striders, all invertebrate groups showed significant (p < 0.05) increases in MeHg concentrations with drainage a…

Mercury speciation by CE: a review.

CE methods for the speciation of inorganic and organomercury compounds are reviewed. Sample preparation, separation conditions and detection modes are discussed. Efficient separation and sensitive determination of mercury species by CE typically involves complexation with various thiols, chromogenic and other chelating agents; however, some methods do not require complexation. Spectrophotometric detection based on UV-visible absorption is by far the most commonly used. Hyphenated techniques, such as CE/inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-MS, hydride generation coupled to ICP-MS or atomic fluoresc…

Mechanisms of mercury disposition in the body.

Today the most widespread human exposures to mercury are to mercury vapor emitted from amalgam tooth fillings, to ethylmercury as a preservative in vaccines, and to methylmercury in edible tissues of fish. This review will focus on the mechanisms of transport of these three species of mercury. All three species are freely moveable throughout the body. Inhaled vapor in view of its physical properties as an uncharged atomic gas is believed to be transported by passive diffusion. Methylmercury and ethylmercury also move freely in the body. Methylmercury, and presumably its closely related chemica…

ALS and mercury intoxication: a relationship?

We report the case of an 81-year-old woman in whom clinical signs and features of electromyographic activity patterns were consistent with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Increased blood level and massive urinary excretion of mercury proved mercury intoxication. Despite a chelation treatment with Meso 2-3 dimercaptosuccininc acid (DMSA), she died after 17 months. The pathophysiology of sporadic ALS remains unclear. However, the role of environmental factors has been suggested. Among some environmental factors, exposure to heavy metals has been considered and ALS cases consecutive to occup…

Structure of mercaptobiphenyl monolayers on mercury.

The molecular-scale structure and phase behavior of single-component Langmuir films of 4'-methyl-4-mercaptobiphenyl (MMB) and 4'-perfluoromethyl-4-mercaptobiphenyl (FMMB) on mercury were studied using surface tensiometry, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, and X-ray reflectivity. At low coverages, a condensed but in-plane disordered single layer of surface-parallel molecules is found for both compounds. At high coverages, both compounds exhibit in-plane-ordered phases of standing-up molecules. For MMB, the biphenyl core dominates the structure, yielding a centered-rectangular unit cell with …

Mercury exposure in children: a review.

Exposure to toxic mercury (Hg) is a growing health hazard throughout the world today. Recent studies show that mercury exposure may occur in the environment, and increasingly in occupational and domestic settings. Children are particularly vulnerable to Hg intoxication, which may lead to impairment of the developing central nervous system, as well as pulmonary and nephrotic damage. Several sources of toxic Hg exposure in children have been reported in biomedical literature: (1) methylmercury, the most widespread source of Hg exposure, is most commonly the result of consumption of contaminated …
