Migration of trace elements and radioisotopes to various fractions of solid wastes generated as a result of the sewage sludge incineration process.

The research was aimed at providing new knowledge in the field of chemical characteristics of solid waste generated in the process of combustion of sewage sludge in fluidized bed furnaces. The research material consisted of disposed fluidized beds (DFB), sewage sludge ash (SSA) and air pollution control residues (APC) from three Polish installations for the thermal treatment of sewage sludge. Natural radionuclides as well as anthropogenic isotope 137Cs were determined in the tested materials and the migration of a wide spectrum of trace elements to various waste fractions generated in the proc

Stable isotope (N, C, Hg) study of methylmercury sources and trophic transfer in the northern gulf of Mexico.

We combined N, C, and Hg stable isotope measurements to identify the most important factors that influence MeHg accumulation in fish from the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM), and to determine if coastal species residing in the Mississippi River (MR) plume and migratory oceanic species derive their MeHg from the same, or different, sources. In six coastal species and two oceanic species (blackfin and yellowfin tuna), trophic position as measured by delta(15)N explained most of the variance in log[MeHg] (r(2) approximately 0.8), but coastal species and tuna fell along distinct, nearly parallel li

Sources and transfers of methylmercury in adjacent river and forest food webs.

Nearly all ecosystems are contaminated with highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg), but the specific sources and pathways leading to the uptake of MeHg within and among food webs are not well understood. In this study, we report stable mercury (Hg) isotope compositions in food webs in a river and an adjacent forest in northern California and demonstrate the utility of Hg isotopes for studying MeHg sources and cross-habitat transfers. We observed large differences in both δ(202)Hg (mass-dependent fractionation) and Δ(199)Hg (mass-independent fractionation) within both food webs. The majority of isot

Influence of feeding ecology on blood mercury concentrations in four species of turtles.

Mercury is a relatively well-studied pollutant because of its global distribution, toxicity, and ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in food webs: however, little is known about bioaccumulation and toxicity of Hg in turtles. Total Hg (THg) concentrations in blood were determined for 552 turtles representing four different species (Chelydra serpentina, Sternotherus odoratus, Chrysemys picta, and Pseudemys rubriventris) from a Hg-contaminated site on the South River (VA, USA) and upstream reference sites. Methylmercury and Se concentrations also were determined in a subset of samples. Becaus

Monomethylmercury Isotopes Reveal a Hidden Biomagnification Pathway in Marine Ecosystems and Their Environmental Implications.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a potent neurotoxin to which humans are exposed via fish consumption. However, the relative importance of planktonic and benthic biomagnification pathways to fish MMHg concentrations in marine food webs is challenging to quantify. Here, we apply compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of Hg to identify fish MMHg biomagnification pathways across nearshore bay (NB), marine continental shelf (MCS), and pelagic ocean (PO) regions. We observe significant differences in Δ199Hg between MMHg and total mercury (THg), highlighting the limitations of using THg isotopes to re

Simultaneous determination of inorganic mercury, methylmercury, and total mercury concentrations in cryogenic fresh-frozen and freeze-dried biological reference materials.

Two speciated isotope dilution (SID) approaches consisting of a single-spike (SS) method and a double-spike (DS) method including a reaction/transformation model for the correction of inadvertent transformations affecting mercury species were compared in terms of accuracy, method performance, and robustness for the simultaneous determination of methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (iHg), and total mercury (HgT) concentrations in five biological Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). The SRMs consisted of oyster and mussel tissue materials displaying different mercury species concentration lev

Mercury sources and budget for the Snake River above a hydroelectric reservoir complex.

Understanding sources of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) to a water body is critical for management but is often complicated by poorly characterized Hg inputs and in situ processes, such as inorganic Hg methylation. In this study, we determined inorganic Hg and MeHg concentrations and loads (filter-passing and particulate fractions) for a semi-arid 164-kilometer stretch of the Snake River above the Hells Canyon Complex, a Hg-impaired hydroelectric reservoir complex on the Idaho-Oregon border, and used water quality measurements and Hg stable isotope ratios to create a comprehensive Hg so

Compound specific stable isotope determination of methylmercury in contaminated soil.

Rice is one of the main sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to humans, and soil is the main source of MeHg to rice grains. Determining the Hg isotope composition in environmental samples is a good way of characterizing sources of Hg pollution and investigating environmental processes. We developed a new compound-specific method for determining stable Hg isotopes in MeHg in contaminated soil and sediment. The method involved HNO3 leaching/solvent extraction, chemical ethylation, and separation by gas chromatography with a solenoid valve optimized to enrich MeHg. The method was optimized by using Me

Evaluation of mercury methylation and methylmercury demethylation rates in vegetated and non-vegetated saltmarsh sediments from two Portuguese estuaries.

Neurotoxic methylmercury (MMHg) is formed from inorganic divalent mercury (Hg2+). However, it is poorly understood to what extent different mercury (Hg) pools contribute to existent MMHg levels. In this study, ambient concentrations of total Hg (THg) and MMHg as well as rates of methylation and demethylation were measured simultaneously in sediments with and without salt-marsh plant vegetation, which were collected in Guadiana and Tagus estuaries, Portugal. Concurrent processes of Hg methylation and MMHg demethylation were directly monitored and compared by spiking sediments cores with stable

American dippers indicate contaminant biotransport by Pacific salmon.

Migrating salmon can increase productivity in Pacific Northwestern streams and lakes through the deposition of nutrients from their decomposing carcasses after spawning. Several studies also report simultaneous biotransport of persistent organic pollutants that have contaminated lake food webs, although no similar effect has been shown conclusively in rivers. We tested the prediction that salmon enhance contaminants in river food webs using the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), an aquatic songbird and a recognized indicator of stream quality. Over 3 years, we analyzed 29 dipper eggs and aqu

Methanogens: principal methylators of mercury in lake periphyton.

Mercury methylation and demethylation rates were measured in periphyton biofilms growing on submerged plants from a shallow fluvial lake located along the St. Lawrence River (Quebec, Canada). Incubations were performed in situ within macrophytes beds using low-level spikes of (199)HgO and Me(200)Hg stable isotopes as tracers. To determine which microbial guilds are playing a role in these processes, methylation/demethylation experiments were performed in the absence and presence of different metabolic inhibitors: chloramphenicol (general bacteriostatic inhibitor), molybdate (sodium molybdate,

Beyond emissions: unravelling the effects of ecosystem change on contaminant concentrations in herring from the Baltic Sea.

The effects of environmental changes on contaminant fate in the ecosystem are poorly understood, even in the otherwise well-studied Baltic Sea. This area is considered one of the most polluted in the world and is currently undergoing rapid shifts related to climate change and eutrophication. In this study, we focus on the effects of an altered productivity base and changes in food web structure on contaminant concentrations in the commercially important Baltic herring, which is also a key-species in the ecosystem. In herring of known size and age, collected within the Swedish National Monitori

Methyl group donor‑resolved isotopic diagnostics reveal mechanistic diversity in UV‑driven methylation of Hg(II).

Photochemical methylation of mercury (Hg) is difficult to isolate in nature. Here we show that short-wavelength UV-C (254 nm) selectively drives aqueous Hg(II)→MeHg photomethylation in the presence of low-molecular-weight organic compounds with different methyl group (acetone, acetic acid, acetaldehyde), whereas no MeHg forms under visible/UV-A/UV-B light. Gross 4-h yields reach 59-84 % (acetone), 25-40 % (acetic acid), and 38-66 % (acetaldehyde). Coupled concentration-isotope time series resolve large odd-mass-independent fractionation (odd-MIF; Δ199Hg up to 25 ‰) with donor-specific Δ199Hg/Δ

Biomonitoring of mercury in farming communities of Brazil.

Human exposure to mercury (Hg) remains a global public health concern, particularly in rural and agricultural communities, where biomonitoring data are scarce. This study assessed total Hg concentrations in blood and urine samples from 290 farmers living in 19 communities in the southwestern region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Additionally, the stable isotopic composition of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) was analyzed in blood to investigate associations with dietary patterns. We also evaluated associations with demographic and lifestyle factors, including age, sex, smoking status, and

Influence of dietary carbon on mercury bioaccumulation in streams of the Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA.

We studied lower food webs in streams of two mercury-sensitive regions to determine whether variations in consumer foraging strategy and resultant dietary carbon signatures accounted for observed within-site and among-site variations in consumer mercury concentration. We collected macroinvertebrates (primary consumers and predators) and selected forage fishes from three sites in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and three sites in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, for analysis of mercury (Hg) and stable isotopes of carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N). Among primary consumers, scrapers

Mercury in the unconfined aquifer of the Isonzo/Soča River alluvial plain downstream from the Idrija mining area.

This work aims at evaluating mercury (Hg) occurrence, spatial distribution and speciation in groundwater of the Isonzo/Soča River upper alluvial plain downstream from the Idrija Hg mine (Western Slovenia). Several wells and piezometers were sampled both in static and dynamic mode. Total (THg) and filtered (FHg) concentrations were generally higher in static (THg, 1.87-855 ng L-1; FHg, 0.20-13.61 ng L-1) than in dynamic mode (THg, 0.08-78.77 ng L-1; FHg, 0.28-6.65 ng L-1). The estimated background value accounts for 2-3 ng L-1. On the basis of hydrochemistry and isotopic composition, the main s
