Plasma Metabolomics Profiles in Prodromal and Clinical Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The long prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease (PD) and the link the disease has with metabolic factors suggest that metabolomics could help identify affected individuals at early stages. OBJECTIVE: The goal was to examine whether plasma metabolomic profiles could identify individuals in the prodromal and clinical phase of PD. METHODS: We quantified and compared the plasma metabolomic profiles of 922 individuals with PD who provided blood samples at a median of 11 years before (n = 809) or 2 years after (n = 113) disease diagnosis to that of matched controls, all selected from t

Untargeted salivary metabolomics for pediatric chronic kidney disease diagnosis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) results in severe morbidity and mortality in children; thus early diagnosis is essential to minimize long-term effects. This research aimed to unveil potential saliva biomarkers for improving early CKD diagnosis, as a non-invasive alternative to blood. An untargeted metabolomics method based on LC-QTOF-MS was applied to unstimulated and acid-stimulated saliva samples from children and adolescents suffering from CKD and healthy subjects. Partial Least Squares Method-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) revealed different metabolic profiles in unstimulated and acid-stimula

Primary open-angle glaucoma: a perspective from plasma metabolomics.

INTRODUCTION: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is an optic neuropathy, characterized by progressive loss of visual field, loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and optic nerve damage. The diagnosis and management of POAG involves tests such as static perimetry, tonometry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to track progressive structural and functional changes. All these methods have limitations. Advancements in the discovery of metabolomic plasma-derived biomarkers may improve clinical outcomes, through identifying susceptible individuals, predicting disease progression, and assessing tre

Soil metabolomics: Deciphering underground metabolic webs in terrestrial ecosystems.

Soil metabolomics is an emerging approach for profiling diverse small molecule metabolites, i.e., metabolomes, in the soil. Soil metabolites, including fatty acids, amino acids, lipids, organic acids, sugars, and volatile organic compounds, often contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur and are directly linked to soil biogeochemical cycles driven by soil microorganisms. This paper presents an overview of methods for analyzing soil metabolites and the state-of-the-art of soil metabolomics in relation to soil nutrient cycling. We describe important applications of met

Metabolomics of developmental changes in Triatoma sanguisuga gut microbiota.

Triatoma sanguisuga is one of the major vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi in the southeastern US, where it sustains a robust zoonotic parasite transmission cycle and occasional human infections. A better understanding of triatomine development may allow for alternative approaches to insecticide-based vector control. Indeed, the role of the gut microbiota and bacterial endosymbionts in triatomine development and in their vectorial capacity is emerging. We investigated here the differences in microbiota among nymph and adult T. sanguisuga, to shed light on the metabolomic interactions occurring durin
