Heavy and trace metals in carcinoma of the gallbladder.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the gallbladder is the commonest malignancy of the biliary tract in northern India The etiologic relation of specific metals (heavy and trace) and their compounds to neoplasia has been a topic of investigation for some time but not adequately described for carcinoma of the gallbladder. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relation of heavy and trace metals to this malignancy. METHODS: The levels of selenium, zinc, copper, manganese, cadmium, chromium, lead, and nickel were estimated in serum, bile, gallstones, and gallbladder tissue using atomic absorption…

Modulating metals as a therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease.

In 1906, Alois Alzheimer first characterized the disease that bears his name. Despite intensive research, which has led to a better understanding of the pathology, there is no effective treatment for this disease. Of the drugs approved by the US FDA, none are disease modifying, only symptomatic. Unfortunately, there have been a number of failed clinical trials in the past 10 years where studies show either no cognitive improvement or, worse, serious side effects associated with treatment. Hence, there is a need for the field to look at alternative approaches to therapy. In this review, we will

Heavy metals exposure and hearing loss in US adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is common and, in young persons, can compromise social development and educational achievement. Exposure to heavy metals has been proposed as an important risk factor for hearing loss. METHODS: We evaluated the cross-sectional associations between blood lead, blood mercury, and urinary cadmium and arsenic levels and audiometrically determined hearing loss in participants aged 12 to 19 years in the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey after accounting for the complex survey design. There were 2535 individuals available for analysis of blood lead…

Experimental evidence for mobility/immobility of metals in peat.

The biogeochemical cycles of most toxic metals have been significantly altered by anthropogenic activities. Anaerobic, rain-fed organic soils are believed to record historical changes in atmospheric pollution. Suspected postdepositional mobility of trace elements, however, hinders the usefulness of peat bogs as pollution archives. To lower this uncertainty, we quantified the mobility of six trace metals in peat during an 18-month field manipulation. A replicated, reciprocal peat transplant experiment was conducted between a heavily polluted and a relatively unpolluted peatland, located 200 km …

Metals and breast cancer: risk factors or healing agents?

Metals and metal compounds are part of our environment. Several metals are essential for physiological functions (e.g., zinc or magnesium); while the beneficial effects of others are uncertain (e.g., manganese), some metals are proven to be toxic (e.g., mercury, lead). Additionally there are organic metal compounds; some of them are extremely toxic (e.g., trimethyltin, methylmercury), but there is very little knowledge available how they are handled by organisms. Scientific evidence indicates that long-term exposure to (some) metallic compounds induces different forms of cancer, including brea…

Immobilization of potentially toxic metals using different soil amendments.

The in situ stabilization of potentially toxic metals (PTMs), using various easily available amendments, is a cost-effective remediation method for contaminated soils. In the present study, we investigated the effectiveness of apatite and a commercial mixture of dolomite, diatomite, smectite basaltic tuff, bentonite, alginite and zeolite (Slovakite) on Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd stabilization by means of decreasing their bioavailability in contaminated soil from an old lead and zinc smelter site in Arnoldstein, Austria. We also investigated the impact of 5% (w/w) apatite and Slovakite applications on s…

Human risk assessment of heavy metals: principles and applications.

Humans are exposed to a number of "heavy metals" such as cadmium, mercury and its organic form methylmercury, uranium, lead, and other metals as wel as metalloids, such as arsenic, in the environment, workplace, food, and water supply. Exposure to these metals may result in adverse health effects, and national and international health agencies have methodologies to set health-based guidance values with the aim to protect the human population. This chapter introduces the general principles of chemical risk assessment, the common four steps of chemical risk assessment: hazard identification, haz…

Lung cancer and exposure to metals: the epidemiological evidence.

Exposure to metallic compounds is ubiquitous, with its widespread use in industry and its presence, mostly in trace amounts, in the environm … m, cadmium, arsenic, and silicon, highlighting what is still unclear. We then review in more detail metals for which the evidence is less clear: lead, titanium, iron, and cobalt. There is scarce evidence for the human carcinogenicity of titanium. Exposure to titanium dioxide is associated with lung cancer excesses in one large study, but this excess may …

[Occupational neurotoxicology due to heavy metals-especially manganese poisoning].

The most hazardous manganese exposures occur in mining and smelting of ore. Recently, the poisoning has been frequently reported to be associated with welding. In occupational exposure, manganese is absorbed mainly by inhalation. Manganese preferentially accumulates in tissues rich in mitochondria. It also penetrates the blood brain barrior and accumulate in the basal ganglia, especially the globus pallidus, but also the striatum. Manganese poisoning is clinically characterized by the central nervous system involvement including psychiatric symptomes, extrapyramidal signs, and less frequently

Heavy metals in petroleum-contaminated surface soils in Serbia.

Investigation of heavy metal contamination levels as well as their association types with substrates in petroleum-contaminated surface soil was carried out using modified sequential extraction method. In that way, remobilization capacity of metal cations, both in natural conditions and in accidents, has been studied. Moreover, partitioning of heavy metals, originating from spilt oil derivative, among surface soil substrates was estimated. Extreme contamination with lead was discovered, as well as the increased concentrations of zinc and copper. Oil-derived Pb and Zn were found to be distribute…

Geochemical effects on metals following permanganate oxidation of DNAPLs.

The application of in situ chemical oxidation for dense, nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation requires delivery of substantial levels of oxidant chemicals into the subsurface to degrade target DNAPLs and to satisfy natural oxidant demand. This practice can raise questions regarding changes in subsurface conditions, yet information regarding potential effects, especially at the field scale, has been lacking. This paper describes an evaluation of the effects on metals associated with in situ chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate at Launch Complex 34 (LC34), Cape Canaveral Air St…

The distribution of trace metals in Florida Bay sediments.

The distribution of trace metals based on surface sediments collected at 40 stations across Florida Bay was done in June, November and February 2000-2001. Concentrations of Sc, V, Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, Al and Mg were determined by ICP-MS, and the total Fe was determined by spectrophotometry. Organic carbon (OC), nitrogen (N), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were also measured. Eleven of 13 metals showed a similar distribution pattern for the various months studied. Maximum concentrations of metals were lower than those found in most estuarine systems and were concentrated in the no…

A Yin-Yang role for metals in prion disease.

The etiolo … PrP can also binds copper at a second site further upstream. More importantly, PrP also binds other metals such as zinc and manganese at these two sites albeit at a lower affinity. This is important because there is evidence that native PrP in prion diseases binds not only copper, but also zinc. This abnormal metal binding probably resulted in the loss o …

Feasibility of using metals to remediate water containing TCE.

The feasibility of treating underground water contaminated by a chlorinated organic compound with bimetallics Fe/ Ni, Zn/Ni and Zn single metal was studied. Column tests to simulate a reactive permeable wall in a funnel-and-gate system were used. Research results indicated that bimetallic Fe0/Ni0 and Zn0/Ni0 all had a very strong degraded power to trichloroethylene (TCE) at concentration up to 25 mg/l under different flow rates (27 cm/day-20 m/day). Furthermore, the concentrations of TCE and various ions in the treated effluent were nearly lower than the values specified in related standards f
