Microbiome-orchestrated cross-organ immunity in autoimmunity: from metabolites to therapeutic targets.

Autoimmune diseases are systemic disorders in which barrier-site immune activation, especially in the gut, can reshape inflammatory programs in distant organs. This review advances a metabolite-centered, cross-organ framework for understanding how gut microbial ecology influences autoimmunity beyond individual gut-organ axes. We synthesize evidence that short-chain fatty acids, bile acid derivatives, tryptophan catabolites, polyamines and related microbial products act as mobile biochemical checkpoints linking intestinal barrier integrity, pattern-recognition signaling, immune-cell metabolism

Mechanistic insights into Fe2O3-mediated directional electron transfer driving anaerobic microbial interactions for enhanced 4-chlorophenol degradation.

Anaerobic degradation of recalcitrant pollutants remains a significant challenge due to insufficient electron supply. Interspecies electron transfer (IET) based on extracellular electron transfer (EET) processes plays a crucial role in supporting the cooperative metabolism of complex microbial consortia. Here, an Fe2O3-coupled anaerobic system driven by a potential gradient was constructed to enhance the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), achieving a removal efficiency 1.38 times that of conventional anaerobic treatment. Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycling coupled with cytochrome c-mediated EET ov…

Inhibitory interactions promote frequent bistability among competing bacteria.

It is largely unknown how the process of microbial community assembly is affected by the order of species arrival, initial species abundances and interactions between species. A minimal way of capturing competitive abilities in a frequency-dependent manner is with an invasibility network specifying whether a species at low abundance can increase in frequency in an environment dominated by another species. Here, using a panel of prolific small-molecule producers and a habitat with feast-and-famine cycles, we show that the most abundant strain can often exclude other strains--resulting in bistab

Fe(Ⅱ)-mediated detoxification mitigates low-dose rare earth elements-induced stress on anammox consortia for mining tailwater treatment.

Rare earth mining activities cause severe nitrogen pollution in watersheds, yet the residual hazardous rare earth elements (REEs) toxicity in tailings wastewater challenges biological nitrogen removal technology. This work demonstrated that introducing low-dose Fe(II) into partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) system significantly alleviated REEs-induced stress on anammox consortia via detoxification and physical barrier reinforcement. The PD/A bioreactor with 15 mg/L Fe(II) (R1) was compared against a control without Fe(II) for real rare earth tailings wastewater treatment. Metagenomic analy

Legionella Survives and Elongates in Algal Consortia Containing Bacteria in Alkaline Oligotrophic Conditions.

Cooling towers are a major source of Legionella, which causes Legionnaires' disease. These bacteria grow in predatory organisms; however, the impact of non-predatory organisms in cooling towers on Legionella survival and growth remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of photosynthetic algae, the primary component of biofilms in open cooling water systems, on Legionella. We cultivated Legionella with algae collected from the towers or with pure algal strain under alkaline conditions and revealed that the Legionella 16S rRNA copy number was higher than that of Legionella alone. Effect of formaldehyde exposure on bacterial communities in simulating indoor environments.

Indoor formaldehyde (CH2O) exceeding the recommended level is a severe threat to human health. Few studies have investigated its effect on indoor surface bacterial communities, affecting habitants' health. This study used 20-L glass containers to mimic the indoor environment with bacterial inputs from human oral respiration. The behavior of bacterial communities responding to CH2O varied among the different CH2O levels. The bacterial community structure significantly changed over time in the 0.054 mg·m-3 CH2O group, which varied from the 0.1 mg·m-3 and 0.25 mg·m-3 CH2O groups. The Chao1 and Sh

Decoding dietary pectin: from structural complexity and microbial CAZyme-PUL networks to cross-feeding and host-beneficial metabolites.

The interaction of pectin, as one of the most complex dietary glycans, with gut microbiota represents a typical pattern for shaping the gut microenvironment and human homeostasis. Pectin has a heterogeneous structure, characterized by homogalacturonan (HG), rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I), and rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II) domains, which dictate its fermentability and functional outcomes. This review systematically examines the pathways through which pectin is degraded by the gut microbial consortia, with a central focus on the role of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes). These enzymes, includin…

Microbial sulfate reduction by Desulfovibrio is an important source of hydrogen sulfide from a large swine finishing facility.

There is still a lack of understanding of H2S formation in agricultural waste, which leads to poor odour prevention and control. Microbial sulfate reduction is a major process contributing to sulfide formation in natural and technogenic environments with high sulfate and low oxygen concentration. Agricultural waste can be considered a low-sulfate system with no obvious input of oxidised sulfur compounds. The purpose of this study was to characterise a microbial community participating in H2S production and estimate the microbial sulfate reduction rate (SRR) in manure slurry from a large-scale

Microbial reassembly-driven multi-niche functional compensation alleviates uranium stress in rapeseed.

BACKGROUND: Uranium (U) pollution harms soil and plants. It is still unclear how microbes help plants survive uranium stress in different root and leaf environments. OBJECTIVES: In this study, We examined how soil microbial reassembly affects rapeseed growth and the microbes living in soil, roots, and leaves under uranium stress, and explored the functional compensation mechanisms involved. METHODS: A pot experiment was conducted with rapeseed grown in three soil backgrounds (original, sterilized, sterilized-inoculated) under control and 150 mg⋅kg-1 uranium stress. Community Interactions and Extracellular Riboflavin Are Associated with Oral Biofilm-Mediated Medical Stainless Steel Corrosion.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) at oral biomaterial interfaces is viewed as an ecological phenomenon, yet how microbial composition and interspecies interactions shape corrosion remains unclear. Consortia-enhanced Cr and Fe release and localized surface pitting, with marked inter-subject variability. Interface-associated biofilms exhibited trends toward compositional shifts and showed enrichment of predicted pathways for fermentatio

Isolation of Kombucha Microorganisms for Application in Perilla Beverage Fermentation.

The increasing consumer demand for kombucha in Vietnam necessitates the development of standardized microbial starter cultures for functional beverage production. Bridging Microbial Biocontrol and Phytochemical Biopesticides: Synergistic Approaches for Sustainable Crop Protection.

The increasing prevalence of pests and diseases in agriculture necessitates innovative strategies for crop protection that mitigate environmental impacts. This review paper investigates the synergistic potential of combining microbial biocontrol agents and phytochemical biopesticides as sustainable alternatives to chemical pesticides. Through a comprehensive review of recent literature, we analyze the mechanisms by which beneficial microbes (e.g., Trichoderma, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas) enhance plant resilience and suppress pathogens, and how plant-derived phytochemicals such as essential oils
