Interactions among micronutrient deficiencies and undernutrition in the Philippines.

Data gathered from the 1987 National Nutrition Survey in the Philippines provided the opportunity to study the interactions among micronutrient deficiencies and undernutrition in different age groups as a basis for program targeting. A randomly selected subset of 50% of the households (3,200) covered by the national survey served as source of subjects. Results showed that there was a greater proportion of anaemia among the undernourished (as judged by weight -for-age in children and weight-for-height in adults (66.0%) than among the adequately nourished (54.6%) alpha=0.01). However, the observ

Micronutrient Deficiencies after Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Deficiencies of trace elements, including zinc, copper, and selenium, after gastrectomy for gastric cancer (GC) have not been elucidated, although those of iron and vitamin B12 are well documented. This study aimed to assess micronutrient deficiencies among patients with GC before and after different types of gastrectomy. METHODS: The study enrolled 112 patients with GC who underwent curative gastrectomy, and clinical data were obtained after gastrectomy in patients without tumor recurrence. Patients were assigned into four surgical groups: distal gastrectomy with Billroth-I rec

Micronutrient Differences in Conventionally and Organically Produced Foods.

Organic foods are often more expensive because the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers is prohibited, and production generally requires more labor. Consumers may feel that organically produced foods are healthier than conventionally produced; however, studies on nutritional value are mixed. This review examines existing reports of micronutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and other bioactive compounds, in plant- and animal-based foods from organic and conventional systems. A literature review was conducted using keywords related to micronutrients, organic farming, and …

Micronutrient Status and Breast Cancer: A Narrative Review.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, at the same time being one of the most prevalent causes of women's death. Many factors such as alcohol, weight fluctuations, or hormonal replacement therapy can potentially contribute to breast cancer development and progression. Another important factor in breast cancer onset includes micronutrient status. In this narrative review, we analyzed 23 micronutrients and their possible influence on breast cancer onset and progression. Further, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of micronutrient status on the prevention of b…

Macronutrient and Micronutrient Intake in Children with Lung Disease.

This review article aims to summarize the literature findings regarding the role of micronutrients in children with lung disease. The nutritional and respiratory statuses of critically ill children are interrelated, and malnutrition is commonly associated with respiratory failure. The most recent nutrition support guidelines for critically ill children have recommended an adequate macronutrient intake in the first week of admission due to its association with good outcomes. In children with lung disease, it is important not to exceed the proportion of carbohydrates in the diet to avoid increas…

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Systemic Sclerosis: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: The primary aim is to identify the micronutrient deficiencies commonly reported in SSc. The exploratory aim is to evaluate associations between micronutrient deficiencies and SSc clinical manifestations. PATIENT AND METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of all published reports on SSc and nutrition in PubMed from its inception to August 2020. Clinical trials, observational studies, meta-analyses, and case series (with ≥20 cases) containing data on nutritional deficiency and SSc were included. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Patients with Decompensated Liver Cirrhosis.

Patients with cirrhosis often develop malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, leading to a worse prognosis and increased mortality. Our main goal was to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. This was a prospective single-center study including 125 consecutive patients hospitalized for acute decompensation of cirrhosis (mostly of alcoholic etiology). A blood test including trace elements and vitamins was performed on admission. The main micronutrient deficiencies observed were vitamin D (in 94.5%), vitamin A (93.5%), vitamin B6 (60.8%

Associations of Bariatric Interventions With Micronutrient and Endocrine Disturbances.

IMPORTANCE: Few studies have described the longitudinal trajectories of serum levels of micronutrients whose deficiencies are associated with serious sequelae following bariatric procedures, such as anemia, osteoporotic fractures, and neuropathies. Furthermore, previous studies comparing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) vs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) or one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) procedures may have been limited by selection and confounding biases. OBJECTIVE: To appraise the spectrum and temporal course of micronutrient deficiencies associated with bone metabolism and ery…

Dietary intake and micronutrient deficiency in children with cancer.

Data regarding micronutrient deficiencies in children with cancer are lacking. We measured micronutrients in a subset of children with cancer (n = 23) participating in a randomized trial of the neutropenic diet. Ninety-six percent of children had ≥1 micronutrient deficiency and 39% had ≥3 micronutrient deficiencies. Eighty-six percent of children had vitamin C deficiency, 87% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency, 50% had zinc deficiency, and 13% had vitamin A deficiency. Dietary intake did not correlate with micronutrient deficiency status. More data are needed regarding the prevalence and etiol…

Maternal and neonatal micronutrient levels in newborns with CHD.

OBJECTIVE: It is suggested that folic acid and/or multivitamins, taken periconceptionally, have a role in the prevention of many congenital … osition of great arteries. There were positive correlations between maternal and neonatal levels of micronutrients, except vitamin B12. CONCLUSION: We thought that high homocysteine and zinc levels and low vitamin D levels in mother-infant pairs might have a role in the aetiopathogenesis of CHD. Large-scale, prospective studies are needed to clarify the role of …

Multiple-micronutrient supplementation for women during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple-micronutrient (MMN) deficiencies often coexist among women of reproductive age in low- to middle-income countries. They are exacerbated in pregnancy due to the increased demands, leading to potentially adverse effects on the mother and developing fetus. Though supplementation with MMNs has been recommended earlier because of the evidence of impact on pregnancy outcomes, a consensus is yet to be reached regarding the replacement of iron and folic acid supplementation with MMNs. Since the last update of this Cochrane review, evidence from a few large trials has recently been
