Epidemiology of Cow's Milk Allergy.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated cow's milk allergy (CMA) is one of the most common food allergies in infants and young children. CMA can result in anaphylactic reactions, and has long term implications on growth and nutrition. There are several studies in diverse populations assessing the epidemiology of CMA. However, assessment is complicated by the presence of other immune-mediated reactions to cow's milk. These include non-IgE and mixed (IgE and non-IgE) reactions and common non-immune mediated reactions, such as lactose intolerance. Estimates of prevalence and population-level patterns are…

Breast milk is conditionally perfect.

Breast milk is the universal preferred nutrition for the newborn human infant. New mother have been encouraged to exclusively breastfeed by health care professionals and consumer-advocacy forums for years, citing "breast milk is the perfect food". The benefits are numerous and include psychological, convenience, economical, ecological and nutritionally superior. Human milk is a composite of nutritional choices of the mother, commencing in the pre-conceptual era. Events influencing the eventual nutritional profile of breast milk for the neonate start with pre-conceptual dietary habits through p…

Iodine Content in Milk Alternatives.

BACKGROUND: Iodine is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones and is acquired through the diet. Cow's milk is a primary source of iodine in the U.S. diet. The objective of this study was to measure the iodine content in a variety of milk alternatives to determine whether milk alternatives contain iodine levels comparable to that of cow's milk. METHODS: Iodine levels from 30 different brands of milk alternatives from 16 different companies were measured by the spectrophotometric method of the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. RESULTS: The 30 brands of milk alternatives contained an average …

[Intra-cystic renal calcium milk].

Intra-cystic renal calcium milk is a rare entity. The authors report a clinical case, and describe the radiographic and tomodensitometric appearances. This 50 year old patient has been followed up for more than ten years for urinary lithiasis with recurrent pain.

Milk osmolality: does it matter?

High osmolality of infant feed reflects a high concentration of solute particles and has been implicated as a cause of necrotising enterocolitis. Evidence for direct intestinal mucosal injury as a result of hyperosmolar feeds is scant, and no good evidence has been found to support such an association. High osmolality of enteral substrate may, however, slow down gastric emptying. Osmolality of current infant feeds ranges from around 300 mOsm/kg in human breast milk to just more than 400 mOsm/kg in fully fortified breast milk. Addition of mineral and vitamin supplements to small volumes of milk…

[Antioxidative properties of human milk].

Human milk, despite numerous advantages, has also antioxidative properties. Oxidative stress is implicated in bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity and necrotizing enterocolitis. Therefore, the influence of human milk on oxidative stress intensity in breast-fed neonates and infants is a significant issue. The concentration of antioxidants in milk depends on mother's diet, vitamins supplementation during pregnancy and lactation and geographical area of domicile. Breast-fed children have higher antioxidative capacity in blood and lower oxidative stress intensity as compared to f…

Cow's milk allergy in infancy.

Cow's milk allergy affects approximately 2% of infants under 2 years of age. This review summarizes the recent advances in understanding its pathophysiology and immunological mechanisms. Apart from IgE-mediated atopic manifestations, T cell-mediated reactions have been demonstrated in infants with cow's milk allergy. The clinical spectrum ranges from immediate-type reactions, presenting with urticaria and angioedema to intermediate and late-onset reactions, including atopic dermatitis, infantile colic, gastro-oesophageal reflux, oesophagitis, infantile proctocolitis, food-associated enterocoli…

Immunological activities associated with milk.

Milk contains a multitude of components that can, or may, provide immune protection to the suckling offspring and that also may promote development of neonatal immune competence. In addition, these specialized factors are essential for the protection of the mammary gland, the offspring's food source, from pathogen colonization and lactation failure. Breast milk also facilitates the establishment of a gut flora that inhibits colonization by many pathogens and stimulates the growth of beneficial microorganisms. Maternal immunity can be transferred to the infant via antibodies, primarily of the s…

[Anaphylactoid reaction to goat's milk].

We report on one young adult male patient who had severe anaphylactoid reaction after eating cheese made from goat's milk. This allergy to goat and sheep's milk, known by the patient, gave mainly rise to oral pruritus. Cow's milk and cheese were always eaten without any incident. Labial test and specific IgE antibodies confirm goat and sheep's milk allergy without cow's milk allergy.

Milk hypersensitivity in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of milk hypersensitivity in Finnish adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: Two hundred men and 206 women aged 27 y randomly recruited from the population register in southwestern Finland. INTERVENTIONS: The subjects were interviewed about their dairy product consumption, abdominal discomfort after dairy product intake and lactose intolerance. From serum samples, serum reactivity to milk protein and milk-specific IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgA were measured. RESULTS: About 20% of the subjects reported abdominal discomfort after dairy product intake,…

Cow's milk enteropathy: surgical pitfalls.

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk-induced intestinal bleeding is a well-recognized cause of rectal bleeding in infancy. The authors report on 5 older children who presented with either visible rectal bleeding or profound anemia associated with occult intestinal bleeding secondary to cow's milk enteropathy. METHODS: Five children (3 boys and 2 girls) aged between 20 months and 9 years were referred for further investigation of gastrointestinal bleeding. Two had been investigated previously on multiple occasions, and both had undergone laparotomies with negative results. Further investigations showed evid…

Breastfeeding and breast milk jaundice.

Two Types of jaundice associated with breast-feeding are recognized. The first type is early onset breastfeeding jaundice which may result from caloric deprivation and/or insufficient frequency of feeding. This type of jaundice can be prevented or treated by encouraging mothers to nurse as frequently as possible, particularly if the bilirubin level is rising. The second type is later onset, prolonged jaundice, known as the breast milk jaundice syndrome which is associated with one or more abnormalities in the maternal milk itself. Breast milk jaundice syndrome generally needs no therapy if ser…

[Chlorinated hydrocarbons in breast milk].

Chlorocarbons, which are used for cleaning purposes in both the home and industry, are of growing interest with respect to environmental pollution. We have therefore, compared the concentrations of chloroform (CH CL3), carbon tetrachloride (C CL4) and tetrachloroethylene (C2 CL4), determined by gas chromatography, in breast milk from 13 puerperal mothers from Innsbruck and the surrounding Tyrol with the respective data in 20 mothers from Linz and the surrounding industrial area. In fact, no elevation in chlorocarbon levels was detected in either group.
