[Conclusions from field studies of stress on miners caused by dry-hot climate conditions].

The physical strain of miners in hot salt mines based on analyses of heart-rates, deep body temperatures, and sweat-rates during real work was studied. Based on these results changes in the working conditions have been realized (air-conditioning of cabins or ambient air, technological changes, workpause-regimes). Cooling-wastes are not sufficient to reduce the thermal strain in hot-dry climate in normal work of salt-mines, independent of the principle of cooling. During fire-fighters work the physical work is the more dominating stressor in relation to the thermal strain.

[Function of the respiratory system in miners with chronic regional hypobaric hypoxia and hypothermia].

The role of meteotropic factors (low atmospheric pressure and cold climate) in the development of functional disorders of respiratory system was studied for miners of the North-East region of the USSR. Regularities in forming external respiration dysfunctions during adaptation of migrating population and development of dust pathology are demonstrated. It was found that general adaptation syndrome in miners exposed to chronic hypobaric hypoxia and hypothermia is characterized by development of hyperventilation syndrome, leading to increase in dust load and moderate mobilization of respiratory t…

The minerals of milk.

The salt of milk constitutes a small part of milk (8-9 g.L(-1)); this fraction contains calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium for the main cations and inorganic phosphate, citrate and chloride for the main anions. In milk, these ions are more or less associated between themselves and with proteins. Depending on the type of ion, they are diffusible (cases of sodium, potassium and chloride) or partially associated with casein molecules (cases of calcium, magnesium, phosphate and citrate), to form large colloidal particles called casein micelles. Today, our knowledge and understanding concerni

Dental mineralization.

Extracellular matrix components and cell-derived microstructures are implicated in mineralization processes which occur in dental tissues. The respective role(s) of collagenic and non-collagenic matrix components are reviewed: phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated proteins, proteoglycans and phosphpholipids. Space-filling amphiphilic molecules seem to play an important role in the preorganization and oriented deposition of calcium phosphate on structures serving more or less as passive support in dentine as well as in enamel.

Surface Reaction of CO2 with Basaltic Minerals as a Mechanism for Carbon Mineralization.

Rapid carbon mineralization has been achieved in basaltic rocks; however, the fundamental chemical mechanisms governing the interactions of CO2-rock remain unclear. Here, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were performed to elucidate the surface reaction of CO2 using three basaltic minerals. To mimic natural conditions, the mineral surfaces were first hydrolyzed by water exposure. The simulation provides molecular-scale evidence that naturally occurring basaltic mineral surfaces are CO2-active. Three previously unrecognized pathways were revealed, distinct from the conventional dissoluti

Insights into dental mineralization from three heritable mineralization disorders.

Teeth are comprised of three unique mineralized tissues, enamel, dentin, and cementum, that are susceptible to developmental defects similar to those affecting bone. X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), caused by PHEX mutations, leads to increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)-driven hypophosphatemia and local extracellular matrix disturbances. Hypophosphatasia (HPP), caused by ALPL mutations, results in increased levels of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a mineralization inhibitor. Generalized arterial calcification in infancy (GACI), caused by ENPP1 mutations, results in vascular calcificat

Mineralization/anti-mineralization networks in the skin and vascular connective tissues.

Ectopic mineralization has been linked to several common clinical conditions with considerable morbidity and mortality. The mineralization processes, both metastatic and dystrophic, affect the skin and vascular connective tissues. There are several contributing metabolic and environmental factors that make uncovering of the precise pathomechanisms of these acquired disorders exceedingly difficult. Several relatively rare heritable disorders share phenotypic manifestations similar to those in common conditions, and, consequently, they serve as genetically controlled model systems to study the d

Mineral maturity and crystallinity index are distinct characteristics of bone mineral.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that mineral maturity and crystallinity index are two different characteristics of bone mineral. To this end, Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIRM) was used. To test our hypothesis, synthetic apatites and human bone samples were used for the validation of the two parameters using FTIRM. Iliac crest samples from seven human controls and two with skeletal fluorosis were analyzed at the bone structural unit (BSU) level by FTIRM on sections 2-4 mum thick. Mineral maturity and crystallinity index were highly correlated in synthetic

Mineral tessellation in bone and the stenciling principle for extracellular matrix mineralization.

We review here the Stenciling Principle for extracellular matrix mineralization that describes a double-negative process (inhibition of inhibitors) that promotes mineralization in bone and other mineralized tissues, whereas the default condition of inhibition alone prevents mineralization elsewhere in soft connective tissues. The stenciling principle acts across multiple levels from the macroscale (skeleton/dentition vs soft connective tissues), to the microscale (for example, entheses, and the tooth attachment complex where the soft periodontal ligament is situated between mineralized tooth c

Cancer mortality in chrysotile miners and millers, Russian Federation: main results (Asbest Chrysotile Cohort-Study).

BACKGROUND: We investigated mortality in workers of the world's largest chrysotile mine and enrichment factories located in the town of Asbest, Russian Federation. METHODS: This historical cohort study included all workers employed for at least 1 year between 1975 and 2010 and follow-up until the end of 2015. Cumulative exposure to dust was estimated based on workers' complete occupational history linked to dust measurements systematically collected from the 1950s. Exposure to chrysotile fibers was estimated using dust-to-fiber conversion factors. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence inter
