Epidemiology of diaphyseal and distal femoral fractures in Rochester, Minnesota, 1965-1984.

Over the 20-year period from 1965 to 1984, 370 residents of Rochester, Minnesota experienced 402 femoral fractures exclusive of the hip, giving an overall incidence rate of 37.1 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval, 33.4-40.8). Of these, 54 were subtrochanteric and 210 were diaphyseal, while 123 involved the distal femur and 15 were at unspecified femoral sites. Fifty-eight percent of these fractures were caused by severe trauma. The incidence of femoral fractures due to severe trauma was greatest in young patients, especially for diaphyseal fractures, and showed a male excess. On…

Surgical resection for metastatic neoplasms of the lung: experience at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.

Pulmonary resection for metastatic disease in 167 patients undergoing 207 thoracotomies resulted in a cumulative survival rate of 29% at five years and 20% at 10 years, with an operative mortality of 0.6%. The most favorable prognosis was associated with testicular and renal cell carcinomas and sarcomas. Less favorable tumors were malignant melanoma, carcinoma of the colon and rectum, and cervix uteri. A significant factor influencing survival was duration of disease-free interval with a 50% five-year survival rate in patients whose primary tumor was treated over five year ago. Patients with m

Identifying Vaccine-associated Rash Illness Amidst a Large Measles Outbreak: Minnesota, 2017.

Characteristics of vaccine-associated rash illness (VARI) and confirmed measles cases were compared during a measles outbreak. Although some clinical differences were noted, measles exposure and identification of the vaccine strain were helpful for public health decision-making. Rapid, vaccine strain-specific diagnostic assays will more efficiently distinguish VARI from measles.

Animal agriculture exposures among Minnesota residents with zoonotic enteric infections, 2012-2016.

Prospective, population-based surveillance to systematically ascertain exposures to food production animals or their environments among Minnesota residents with sporadic, domestically acquired, laboratory-confirmed enteric zoonotic pathogen infections was conducted from 2012 through 2016. Twenty-three percent (n = 1708) of the 7560 enteric disease cases in the study reported an animal agriculture exposure in their incubation period, including 60% (344/571) of Cryptosporidium parvum cases, 28% (934/3391) of Campylobacter cases, 22% (85/383) of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 …

Imported Toxin-Producing Cutaneous Diphtheria - Minnesota, Washington, and New Mexico, 2015-2018.

From September 2015 to March 2018, CDC confirmed four cases of cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxin-producing Corynebacterium diphtheriae in patients from Minnesota (two), Washington (one), and New Mexico (one). All patients had recently returned to the United States after travel to countries where diphtheria is endemic. C. diphtheriae infection was not clinically suspected in any of the patients; treating institutions detected the organism through matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) testing of wound-derived coryneform isolates. MALDI-TOF is…

Incubation period for outbreak-associated, non-typhoidal salmonellosis cases, Minnesota, 2000-2015.

Incubation period for non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections is generally reported as 6-72 h despite numerous reports of foodborne NTS outbreaks with median incubation periods >3 days. We summarised 16 years of Minnesota foodborne NTS outbreaks to better estimate the expected range of incubation periods for NTS infections. Of the 1517 NTS outbreak cases, 725 had enough data to calculate a precise incubation period. The median incubation period was 45 h; 77 (11%) cases had incubations ⩽12 h and 211 (29%) cases had incubations >72 h. Incubation period length varied by outbreak vehicle type, S…

Hospital-Treated Falls and Comorbidities Among Older Adults in Minnesota, 2010-2014.

Falls are a serious concern for older adults as they frequently result in injury, disability and even death. In older adults in Minnesota, the number and rate of hospital-treated falls have been increasing, for both males and females. The purpose of this study was to estimate trends in falls among older adults in Minnesota, and to examine whether there is an association between severe outcomes of falls and predictors. We investigated hospital-treated (both emergency department treatment and hospitalizations) falls among adults 65 years and older in Minnesota between 2010 and 2014, using hospit…

Age-specific trends in mammographic density: the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study.

Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, yet few studies have evaluated density trends, and associated factors, over time. The authors retrieved and digitized mammograms (> or =1 per woman) imaged in 1990-2003 to evaluate percent density (PD) in the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family cohort. Multivariable-adjusted, mixed-effects, repeated-measures models incorporating a natural cubic spline provided estimates of nonlinear trends in PD with age and were used to examine association with covariates. Overall, 5,698 mammograms from 1,689 women with covariate information were digi…

Trace element concentrations and bioindicator responses in tree swallows from northwestern Minnesota.

Extremely high concentrations of cadmium (3.5 microg/g dry wgt.) and elevated concentrations of chromium (>10 microg/g dry wgt.) and mercury (1.6 microg/g dry wgt.) were reported in waterbird tissues at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Minnesota in 1994. Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were studied during 1998-2001 at three drainages into the Refuge, two pools on the Refuge, and at a nearby reference location to document whether high levels of contaminants were still present, and if so to quantify the source and severity of the contamination. Trace elements were measured in…

Incidence, clinical features, and prognosis in Bell's palsy, Rochester, Minnesota, 1968-1982.

The average annual incidence of Bell's palsy per 100,000 population in Rochester, Minnesota, for 1968 through 1982 was 25.0 for both sexes combined; crude rates for males and females were 22.8 and 26.9, respectively, based on 85 males and 121 females. The relationship between various clinical features, patient characteristics, and the type of recovery was analyzed. In 206 patients, 28 (14%) experienced incomplete recovery and 178 (86%) had complete recovery, based on evidence in the medical records. Using logistic regression, complete facial weakness, non-ear pain, and hypertension were identi…

MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF SARCOCYSTIS SPOROCYSTS IN INTESTINES OF BOBCAT (LYNX RUFUS) FROM MINNESOTA.

Sarcocystis species are heteroxenous protozoan parasites of major veterinary and public health relevance, yet the role of wild felids in their natural transmission cycles remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated Sarcocystis infections in 189 bobcats (Lynx rufus) harvested from Minnesota during 2024-2025. Intestinal homogenates of 179 were examined microscopically, and Sarcocystis sporocysts were found in 38 bobcats (21.2%). DNA was extracted from all 38 positive samples, of which 19 were PCR-positive, and 14 yielded high-quality sequences for molecular characterization using p…

Invasive Pasteurella multocida Infections - Report of Five Cases at a Minnesota Hospital, 2014.

During October 2014, the Minnesota Department of Health was notified of five Hospital A patients with Pasteurella multocida bacteraemia; three had died. Human soft tissue infection with P. multocida typically results from cat or dog bites or scratches. Invasive infection, defined as a P. multocida isolate from a usually sterile site, is rare. We evaluated P. multocida isolations at Hospital A, compared with other Minnesota hospitals to understand invasive infection trends. A case was defined as clinically confirmed P. multocida in a Minnesota resident during 2012-2014. All hospital laboratorie…
