Mites associated with budgerigars Melopsittacus undulatus (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) and the first report of Ornithonyssus bursa (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Hematophagous mites affect numerous bird species, causing severe injuries to the budgerigars. Some species can cause dermatitis in humans. AIMS: The purpose was to morphologically identify the mites related to budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and their nests in Yucatan, Mexico. METHODS: In May 2022, a private budgerigar hatchery was visited and mites were collected from the bodies of the birds and their nests. The morphological traits of the mites were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Four of 30 birds showed severe clinical signs of mite infestation. The

Prevalence, risk factors and economic importance of infestations with Sarcoptes scabiei and Haematopinus suis in sows of pig breeding farms in Hesse, Germany.

A cross-sectional survey was performed in 110 randomly selected pig-breeding farms of southern Hesse, Germany to estimate the prevalence of ectoparasite infestations and to find possible risk factors. Ear scrapings of, if available, 10 sows per farm were examined for Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis (De Geer) (Acaridida: Sarcoptidae) by the potassium hydroxide digestion method, and a total of 2754 sows was inspected for skin lesions and infestations with Haematopinus suis (L.) (Anoplurida: Haematopinidae). Data on farm profiles and sows were collected by a questionnaire. In total, 19.1% and 2.5% of

Varroa jacobsoni (Acari: Varroidae) is more than one species.

Varroa jacobsoni was first described as a natural ectoparasitic mite of the Eastern honeybee (Apis cerana) throughout Asia. It later switched host to the Western honeybee (A. mellifera) and has now become a serious pest of that bee worldwide. The studies reported here on genotypic, phenotypic and reproductive variation among V. jacobsoni infesting A. cerana throughout Asia demonstrate that V. jacobsoni is a complex of at least two different species. In a new classification V. jacobsoni is here redefined as encompassing nine haplotypes (mites with distinct mtDNA CO-I gene sequences) that infest

Efficacy evaluation of lotilaner (Credelio™) in experimentally induced Otodectes cynotis infestations in cats.

BACKGROUND: The ear mite, Otodectes cynotis, is pathogenic, highly contagious and a global cause of otitis externa and pruritus in cats and dogs. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a single oral application of lotilaner flavoured chewable tablets for cats (Credelio™; Elanco, Greenfield, IN, USA) in cats experimentally infested with O. cynotis. METHODS: Sixteen adult cats were experimentally infested with O. cynotis and confirmed to be mite positive by otoscopic examination. Infested cats were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. On day 0, a group of eight cats was treated on

Control of psoroptic scabies on calves with ivermectin.

Eleven Hereford or Angus-cross calves slightly to severely infested with common scabies mites (Psoroptes ovis) were treated with 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1a (ivermectin) at dosages given subcutaneously (SC)--300 micrograms/kg; orally--400 micrograms/kg; or IM--50, 100, or 200 micrograms/kg. At 14 days after treatment, live mites were not found on any of the calves treated SC or IM, but live mites were found on all of the orally treated calves at 14 days and on 1 of them at 28 days after treatment. Four nontreated calves retained their mite infestations during the course of the IM test. Biting …

First record of ectoparasites (Phthiraptera and Acari) from the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) in Colombia.

Several species of ectoparasites, including chewing lice and mites are closely associated with their hosts. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is globally listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and its population has been steadily declining in recent decades suggesting a potential extinction of associated entomofauna. The purpose of this study was to record the species of ectoparasites infesting three individuals of Andean condor found dead in the 'Páramo del Almorzadero' Santander Department, Northeastern Colombia. One juvenile (male) and two adults (male and female) Andean condors received for nec

Pigeon mite: An underdiagnosed cause of papular urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Dermanyssus gallinae, known as bird mite, generally lives on nestlings' featherless skin. Humans are accidentally infected, and itchy dermatitis is induced when the mites are unable to use birds' blood. The diagnosis is difficult due to the very small size and rapid movement of the mites, which make them hard to spot. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old male and his mother were referred to the allergy clinic complaining of a 2-week generalized itchy cutaneous papular lesion, unresponsive to antihista-mines, with the feeling of an insect moving on the surface of the skin. Due to the h

Tokelau Islands Children's Study: scabies infestation in children.

Tokelau children have been examined for scabies infestation in three groups--those living in their home atolls--those living in New Zealand in 1972-73, and those living in New Zealand in 1975. There was less infestation in Tokelau than in New Zealand. In 1975 the rate of infestation in New Zealand had increased since 1972. The manifestation of the mite in children in New Zealand varied from the classical descriptions, in that the mite itself, and its burrows, were seldom found, and the skin lesions were more often seen on the body than on the wrists and hands. A treatment regime which was foun

Scanning electron microscopy of sarcoptic mange lesions in swine.

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lesions of sarcoptic mange in swine, pass through 3 different stages. During the first 3 weeks of infestation, adult female mites tunnel into the epidermis. During the following 3 or 4 weeks, the surface openings of these tunnels become covered with keratinized epidermal crust which increases in thickness. After 7 weeks of infestation, the crust falls off, the tunnel openings become apparent again and most of the mites vacate these tunnels.

The acarinia and nycteribidia zones of Miniopterus schreibersi Kuhl (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in the northeast of Spain.

Acarinia and nycteribidia zones of the bat species Miniopterus schreibersi Kuhl are studied in an area of northeast of Spain, where captures over a period of five years have been carried out. The species that characterize the mite-tick spectrum are Ixodes (Pomerantzevella) simplex, Macronyssus longimanus, Macronyssus granulosus and Spinturnix psi; nycteribidium is determined mainly by the presence of Nycteribia schmidlii. The life cycle, prevalence, curves of parasitation, and other notes on these most abundant ectoparasites are provided, as well as observations on other ticks, mites, and nyct

Honey bee hygienic selection impacts virus dynamics of both bees and Varroa mites.

The Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) has reshaped the viral landscape of honey bee colonies, significantly contributing to colony mortality. In response, Varroa-resistant honey bee breeding programs have developed as a promising and sustainable long-term strategy to control Varroa mite infestations in managed colonies. These breeding programs drive the coevolution of hygienic bees and Varroa mites, however the impact of such coevolution on bee and mite viral dynamics remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated how Varroa-resistant traits influence the tripartite interaction …

In vitro survival of scabies mites.

BACKGROUND: The correct treatment and management of scabies is expensive and time-consuming, and may have a negative impact on patients and their families. AIM: To investigate the effects of permethrin 5% cream on scabies mites, and explore mite survival times outside the human body. METHODS: We performed a nonrandomized controlled study. In total, 20 petri dishes were coated with permethrin 5% cream (treatment group) and 20 plain petri dishes (control group) each had one scabies mite placed in them, and were then observed at baseline and 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12 h from baseline. Detection of a knockdown mutation in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel associated with permethrin tolerance in Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis mites.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence has sparked a debate on the loss of sensitivity of scabies mites to conventional permethrin therapy. Mutations in the voltage-sensitive sodium channels (VSSC) were associated with knockdown resistance (kdr) in many arthropods, but have never been identified in Sarcoptes scabiei variatio (var.) hominis mites. OBJECTIVES: To identify factors contributing to therapy failure. METHODS: Sixty-seven mites were collected from 64 scabies-infested patients in Vienna, Austria, of whom 85.9% were refractory to prior permethrin-based treatments, and genotyped for the prese
