Research Toward Understanding the Benefits and Limitations of Orthotic Use To Improve Mobility and Balance for Individuals With Neuropathic Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Walking is a vital activity often compromised in individuals with neuropathic conditions. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and Cerebral Palsy (CP) are two common neurodevelopmental disabilities affecting gait, predisposing to the risk of falls. With guiding scientific evidence limited, there is a critical need to better understand how surgical correction affects mobility, balance confidence, and gait compared to ankle foot orthosis (AFO) bracing. A systematic approach will enable rigorous collaborative research to advance clinical care. METHODS: Key elements of this vision includ

Effects of 12-week power training on bone in mobility-limited older adults: randomised controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: This study examines how power training affects estimated bone strength, revealing that females benefit more than males, especially in the upper limbs (radius). These findings highlight the importance of designing sex-specific exercise programs to enhance bone health. Further research is needed to optimize training duration and address site-specific differences. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effects of 12-week of power training (PWT), an explosive form of strength training, on bone microarchitecture, estimated bone strength, and markers in mobility-limited (gait speed <

Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminth infections with digital mobile microscopy and artificial intelligence in a resource-limited setting.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases and result in a major disease burden in low- and middle-income countries, especially in school-aged children. Improved diagnostic methods, especially for light intensity infections, are needed for efficient, control and elimination of STHs as a public health problem, as well as STH management. Image-based artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise for STH detection in digitized stool samples. However, the diagnostic accuracy of AI-based analysis of entire microscope slides,

Animal foods and mobility limitations in community-dwelling young-old adults: longitudinal analysis of the EpiDoC cohort.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition and particularly protein play a role in optimally stimulating muscle protein synthesis and maintaining function. Animal foods are excellent sources of high-quality protein. Therefore, we aimed to determine the association between the consumption of animal foods and mobility limitations in young-old adults. METHODS: The analytic sample was composed of 2860 community-dwelling adults aged 50 and over from a nationally representative longitudinal cohort of Portuguese adults who were followed up to 2.7 years. An animal food intake score was derived from the frequency of consu

The course of gait speed during a 400m walk test of mobility limitations in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: The 400‑m walk test (400MWT) of usual gait speed is an assessment of mobility limitations in geriatric medicine and sarcopenic research. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the course of gait speed during a 400MWT in community-dwelling older adults in terms of physical, psychological and general health-related outcomes. Possible plateau phases during the 400MWT could enable integrated measurements of short distance walk tests. METHODS: In this study 148 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 80.4 ± 4.4 years, 61% women) performed a 400MWT at comfortable gait speed

Sarcopenia Characteristics Are Associated with Incident Mobility Limitations in African Caribbean Men: The Tobago Longitudinal Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia varies by ethnicity, and has a major impact on health in older adults. However, little is known about sarcopenia characteristics in African ancestry populations outside the United States. We examined sarcopenia characteristics in 2,142 African Caribbean men aged 59.0 ± 10.4 years (range: 40-92 years) in Tobago, and their association with incident mobility limitations in those aged 55+ (n = 738). METHODS: Body mass index (BMI), grip strength, dual-x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) appendicular lean mass (ALM), and self-reported mobility limitations were measured at baseline, an

The modified Healthy Aging Index is associated with mobility limitations and falls in a community-based sample of oldest old.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Healthy Aging Index (HAI) is useful in capturing the health status of multiple organ systems in older adults. Previous studies have mainly focused on the association of HAI with mortality and disability. We constructed a modified HAI (mHAI) to examine its association with mobility limitations and falls in a community-based sampling of older Chinese adults. METHODS: We investigated 399 community-dwelling older adults aged 80 years or older, and constructed the mHAI with five non-invasive tests (systolic blood pressure, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, glucose co

Development of a Predictive Algorithm to Identify Adults With Mobility Limitations Using VA Health Care Administrative Data.

An estimated 31.5 million Americans have a mobility limitation. Health care administrative data could be a valuable resource for research on this population but methods for cohort identification are lacking. We developed and tested an algorithm to reliably identify adults with mobility limitation in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care data. We linked diagnosis, encounter, durable medical equipment, and demographic data for 964 veterans to their self-reported mobility limitation from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. We evaluated performance of logistic regression models in c

Testosterone does not affect agrin cleavage in mobility-limited older men despite improvement in physical function.

In a subset of men, sarcopenia and physical dysfunction occur due to destabilization of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is manifested by elevated serum concentrations of C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF). Testosterone administration improves physical function in some studies; however, its effects on serum circulating CAF concentrations remain unknown. Here we evaluate the effects of testosterone administration on circulating CAF levels in mobility-limited men with low testosterone aged 65 or older participating in the Testosterone in Older Men with Mobility Limitations (TOM) Trial. We an

The use of eccentric circummeatal-based flap with combined limited urethral mobilization technique for distal hypospadias repair.

We report a suitable approach to the correction of subcoronal meatus for any variants and report our experience with this method. An eccentric circummeatal-based flap was used to treat 42 patients with hypospadias during a 4-year period. The position of the meatus was coronal in 18 patients (43 percent) and subcoronal and distal penile in 16 (38 percent) and 8 (19 percent) patients, respectively. In addition, 19 patients had marked ventriflexion. The mean length of the urethroplasty was 1.1 cm (ranging from 0.6 to 1.7 cm). In no instance was residual ventral curvature noted nor did the neouret
