Palliative care of a large captive saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) with metastatic digital squamous cell carcinoma.

A 4.90 m male saltwater crocodile, "Burt", was first noticed with irregular keratinisation involving the claw of the first digit of his left hind limb in December 2021. Three months later (March 2022), the digit had significantly increased in size and was noticeably affecting his weight-bearing ability. An excisional biopsy was performed, involving digit amputation. Histopathology revealed that the lesion was a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), complicated by ulceration and opportunistic Morganella morganii infection. Within 3 months, the mass recurred. In June 2022, a second amputation was perfo…

Grey seal Halichoerus grypus populations are increasing across the North Atlantic, where occasional reports describe attacks, predation on o … all 4 delphinids were believed to have died from bacterial infections, including Brucella ceti and Morganella morganii, and it is likely that these delphinids were already debilitated at the time of the seal encounters. In addition, in 2 cases, seal-associated pathogens-Streptococcus phocae and Atopobacter phocae-were isolated. This study expands the known …

Cloacal Gram-Negative Microbiota in Free-Living Grass Snake Natrix natrix from Poland.

Reptiles appear to be an important vector for Gram-negative pathogens, therefore, they are epidemiologically relevant. However, the composit … pecies of Gram-negative bacteria were isolated. The most common species were: Aeromonas hydrophila, Morganella morganii, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella spp. The bacteria prevalent in N. natrix cloacal swabs are likely to represent the natural intestinal Gram-negative microbiota of the examined snakes. Importantly, the identified bacteria are pathogenic to huma …

Comparative Epidemiology and Resistance Trends of Proteae in Urinary Tract Infections of Inpatients and Outpatients: A 10-Year Retrospective Study.

Compared with infections caused by other bacterial pathogens, urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Proteae are often more severe and associated with a higher rate of recurrence, sequelae, and pyelonephritis. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess and compare the prevalence of UTIs caused by different species of the Proteae tribe (namely Proteus, Morganella and Providencia species) and the antibiotic resistance levels isolated from inpatients and outpatients in a primary- and tertiary-care teaching hospital in the Southern Great Plain of Hungary, during a 10-year study period. Crystalline bacterial biofilm formation on urinary catheters by urease-producing urinary tract pathogens: a simple method of control.

The problem of catheter encrustation stems from infection by urease-producing bacteria. These organisms generate ammonia from urea, elevate … e to raise the urinary pH above 8.3 and produce catheter-blocking crystalline biofilms within 40 h. Morganella morganii and Staphylococcus aureus elevated the pH of urine to 7.4 and 6.9, respectively, and caused some crystal deposition in the biofilms but did not block catheters in the 96 h experimental period. Isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella o …

AIMS: To investigate the diversity and dissemination of tetracycline resistance genes in isolates from estuarine waters. METHODS AND RESULT … tet(A) and tet(M). To our knowledge, this study presents the first description of a tet(D) gene in Morganella morganii. Hybridization revealed that tet genes were plasmid-located in 31% of the isolates. Those isolates were included as donors in conjugation experiments and 38% transferred tetracycline resistance. CONCLUSIONS: A considerable diversity of tet …

[Antibacterial activity of gentamicin against clinical isolates in pediatrics].

Antibacterial activity of gentamicin (GM), along with activities of other aminoglycosides and beta-lactams, was studied against clinical isolates collected from pediatric patients during a period of May 1986-April 1987. 1. GM-resistance was noted in 22% of Staphylococcus aureus, 6% of Proteus vulgaris, 8% of Morganella morganii, 40% of Providencia spp., 6% of Enterobacter spp., 14% of Serratia marcescens, and 14% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. No GM-resistance was observed with isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis. 2. The antibacterial activity of GM a…

Overall, 77% (86/112) of cases developed clinically suspected wound infections and 54% (61/112) required surgery secondary to tissue necrosis, finger or toe gangrene, and/or necrotizing fasciitis. Morganella morganii was the most abundant gram-negative bacterial strain isolated from bite wounds, followed by Proteus spp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Providencia spp. in…

Clinical significance of infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae blood isolates with inducible AmpC β-lactamase.

Few studies have investigated the clinical features and outcomes for extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacter spp., Citrobacter spp., Serratia spp., and Morganella morganii (ECSM) bloodstream infections. This study was performed to investigate the clinical features and outcomes for ESBL-producing ECSM bloodstream infections. Patients with ECSM bloodstream infection were enrolled from October 2006 to March 2008. Of 124 patients with ECSM bacteremia, 30 cases (24.2%) were ESBL-producing isolates. Thirty-two strains were inducible AmpC producers (21 K pneumoniae strains, 6 Morganella morganii strains and 3 E. aerogenes strains). Two K. pneumoniae strains were ESBL/AmpC coproducers.
