[STD and mother to child transmission].

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) is the disease that is spread by sexual contact, including chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, genital warts, herpes, syphilis, and infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). STDs are the most common contagious diseases among young people in Japan. People with an STD may not have any symptoms and may not know they have it. Even if there are no symptoms, their health can be affected. Advanced STDs can cause severe damage to body. Often, symptoms occur only if the disease becomes more advanced. Untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory

Mothering a child with hidden impairments.

When a mother has a child with a chronic impairment, the occupational demands of mothering extend to address the specialized needs of that child. This research explores how the type of hidden impairment in a child influences family routines and occupations. This qualitative study consisted of interviews with 22 mothers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a behavioral disorder, and 22 mothers of children with cystic fibrosis, a physical disorder. Open-ended questions were used to explore family demands, resources, time use, routines, concerns, and support. The tran…

[Turner's syndrome in mother and daughter].

A girl with Turner's syndrome due to a 45,X mosaicism and a ring chromosome was born to a 29-year-old mother with a non-mosaic 45,X in her blood lymphocytes. Cytogenetic investigation revealed that the ring chromosome of the daughter included almost the entire X chromosome with the exception of the uppermost part of the short arm. In the literature, girls with Turner's syndrome are said to have functional ovarian tissue and pregnancies in women with Turner's syndrome after oocyte donation and intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI) are no longer exceptional. However, since ovarian failure oc

[Newborn of a mother with HELLP syndrome].

HELLP syndrome is a serious complication of pregnancy with characteristic appearances between 22 to 26 weeks of gestation. Clinical classification in three groups, is based on platelet count. Early diagnosis and appropriate management allow women to achieve a mortality rate below 1%. Neonatal complications are strongly associated with a newborn's immaturity and class of HELLP syndrome. In both presented cases despite identical maternal treatment (steroids because of I st class of HELLP syndrome) neonatal clinical courses were different due to the differences in gestational age. However, approp

The mother of all HIV challenges.

AIDS researchers are finding cheaper and simpler ways to slow the spread of HIV from mother to child, and more pregnant women, even in the poorest countries, have access to anti-HIV drugs and formula--thanks to the largesse of donors, discounts from industry, new trade laws, and the tenacity of individual clinicians. But just as researchers offer ways to clear one enormous hurdle--drug availability--they run smack into other ones, ranging from social stigmas that discourage testing to disinterest on the part of cash-strapped health authorities to a deeply ingrained culture of breast-feeding--o

Mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

The first children with HIV-1 infection were described in 1983. As of 1998, the global HIV epidemic is having a profound impact on the health and survival of children. Almost all HIV infections among young children are due to vertical transmission, and the intrapartum period appears to provide us with a crucial window of opportunity for prevention. Postnatal transmission through breastfeeding also contributes an estimated one third to one half of vertical transmission worldwide. Carefully conducted epidemiologic studies are elucidating the immunologic, virologic, and behavioral factors affecti

Protein extract as a surrogate mother.

Brief dynamic psychotherapy, carried out by an resident in training, can bring significant improvement to a patient who does not necessarily meet ideal selection criteria. S. had experienced early childhood deprivation resulting in adult psychosomatic manifestations of feeling hypoglycemic under pressure of responsibility or during fear of abandonment. He soothed himself with the aid of a bottle of "protein extract," which he carried at all times on his belt. The 21-week therapy resulted in his increased ability to differentiate the sources of his anxiety and allowed him to find new and more m

Syntelencephaly in an infant of a diabetic mother.

Here we report on an infant of a diabetic mother (IDM) with midline interhemispheric "fusion" (MIF), or syntelencephaly. This is a rare anomaly characterized by segmental failure of cleavage of the cerebral hemispheres and other brain structures in the posterior frontal and parietal regions, with a normal interhemispheric fissure anterior and posterior to the "fused" region. While there is obvious overlap with holoprosencephaly (HPE), this condition differs from HPE in that the midline "fusion" in MIF is complete but segmental, while the structural brain anomalies seen in the HPE spectrum prog

Problem areas of the rheumatic mother.

The extent to which women with rheumatic diseases are disabled in caring for their children is unknown. Fifty-seven women with rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, or systemic lupus erythematosus, all of whom had children under 6 years of age born during the disease, were interviewed. Patients with different diseases differed in their disabilities, but lifting, carrying, transporting, and bathing the child were difficult for most patients. Attention to these problem areas is necessary in the care of young mothers with rheumatic illne…

Pemphigus in an Indian mother and daughter.

An Indian mother and daughter who developed pemphigus within a few months of one another are reported. This is the first fully documented case of familial pemphigus in Indian patients, and the first occasion on which HLA typing has been performed. It is also the first fully documented example of familial pemphigus in the British literature.

Problems in counseling the epileptic mother.

Epileptics, medical colleagues, and the public must be educated regarding the teratogenicity of anticonvulsants to the developing fetus. To prevent the serious problems of the fetal hydantoin-barbiturate syndrome, epileptic mothers must be given counseling. There are numerous problems encountered in counseling any individual with genetic disorders and dull intellect. More than the usual time and effort and cooperation of many agencies is needed to achieve success in counseling.
