Biological and behavioral pathways from prenatal depression to offspring cardiometabolic risk: Testing the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis.

Given prior literature focused on the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease framework, there is strong rationale to hypothesize that reducing depression in the prenatal period will cause improvements in offspring cardiometabolic health. The current review outlines evidence that prenatal depression is associated with offspring cardiometabolic risk and health behaviors. We review evidence of these associations in humans and in nonhuman animals at multiple developmental periods, from the prenatal period (maternal preeclampsia, gestational diabetes), neonatal period (preterm birth, small siz

How low birthweight and gestational age contribute to increased inpatient costs for multiple births.

The dramatic rise in the number of multiple gestation births has led to concerns about heavy resource use by these newborns and the design of cost-effective interventions. This study uses medical records data to compare single and multiple births in terms of hospital charges by cost center, length of stay, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) days, and discharge status. Potential mediators examined were gestational age and birthweight. These factors, respectively, accounted for 50% and 40% of the increase in total charges due to multiple gestation. The remaining "direct effect" was due primaril

Comparison of Pregnancy and Neonatal Outcomes Between Fresh Embryo Transfer and Frozen-Thawed Embryo Transfer.

This study compared the pregnancy and neonatal outcomes between fresh embryo transfer and frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). These patients were split into two groups: the fresh embryo transfer group and the FET group. The general conditions, pregnancy outcomes, and neonatal outcomes between these groups were compared. The influencing factors of fetal macrosomia occurrence were explored as well. Compared with the fresh embryo transfer group, the FET group had a significantly higher mean age (32.59 ± 4.77 vs. 31.90 ± 4.71, p < 0.05) and lower multiple pregnancy rate (21.2% vs. 26.9%, p < 0.05

Intergenerational childhood trauma: associations by subtype across two generations in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort.

Background: Intergenerational continuity of childhood trauma is a major public health concern. Better understanding of patterns can inform prevention, particularly for subtypes beyond physical abuse and in underserved populations. Objective: This study examined associations between parent and offspring histories of childhood maltreatment in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort, with a focus on subtype-specific patterns of continuity. Method: Using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), we assessed childhood maltreatment in Generation 1 (G1; N = 68) and their emerging adult off

Genetic Insights Into Perinatal Outcomes of Maternal Antihypertensive Therapy During Pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE: Limited information exists regarding the impact of pharmacotherapy in pregnancy due to ethical concerns of unintended fetal harm. Yet, maternal prescriptive drug use for chronic conditions such as hypertension is common. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential causal relationships between perturbing maternal genetic variants influencing antihypertensive drug targets and perinatal outcomes among offspring using mendelian randomization (MR). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This 2-sample MR study used individual-level single-nucleotide variation (SNV) outcome data from mother-father-

A regional approach to promoting improved care of multiples.

Live births of multiples in the U.S. rose 35% from 87,700 in 1988 to 118,295 in 1998. This increase presents public health issues due to the elevated health and psychosocial risks that accompany multiple birth. However, health and social service providers and educators are poorly prepared to address the specific needs of the multiple birth population. The Twin Service Network Project therefore developed regional networks of multiple birth training and resources in California to address this problem. Results indicate that these can substantially improve the care available to multiples. The proj

Risks of selected congenital malformations among offspring of mixed race-ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the occurrence of specific congenital malformations among offspring of mixed race-ethnicity. METHODS: Using data from a population-based registry, we explored the occurrence of selected malformation phenotypes in offspring to parents who were of different race-ethnicity. Data were derived from the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program, a population-based active surveillance system for collecting information on infants and fetuses with congenital malformations using multiple source ascertainment. Approximately 2.6 million live births and stillbirths occu

Associations between prenatal metal exposure and growth rate in children: Based on Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that prenatal metal exposure is associated with child anthropometry. However, studies focusing on the growth rate of anthropometry among children have not been conducted. This study aimed to examine associations between the exposure of multiple metals during pregnancy and the growth rate of anthropometry among offspring. METHODS: 743 mother-child pairs from the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study (HBCS) were included. Levels of eleven metals in mother's blood during pregnancy were measured. Offspring had a mean of 5.7 measurements on anthropometric indicators includin

The association between pregnancy processes, preterm delivery, low birth weight, and postpartum depressions--the need for interdisciplinary integration.

Pregnancy and peripartum/perinatal periods are characterized by significant biologic as well as psychosocial processes and changes that influence the 2 individuals at focus (mother and fetus), as well as their interactions with the immediate environment. Multiple intertwined pathologic pregnancy processes (hormonal, biologic, stress and other mental occurrences) may lead to fetal distress, preterm delivery (PTD), low birth weight (LBW), and other delivery complications as well as to postpartum disorders. PTD and LBW in particular have been demonstrated to be associated with significant mortali

Safety profiles of offspring born from early-follicular long-acting GnRH agonist protocol and daily mid-luteal GnRH agonist protocol: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH-a) have been widely used for controlled ovarian stimulation in assisted reproductive technology (ART). The early-follicular long-acting GnRH-a long protocol (EFL) and the luteal phase short-acting GnRH-a long protocol (LPS) are commonly used GnRH agonist protocols. We conducted a retrospective analysis to assess and compare the rates of congenital abnormalities and safety profiles in offspring born from the EFL and LPS protocols. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to analyze and compare neonatal data from pa

Decoupling of maternal and neonatal inflammatory levels at the maternal-fetal interface: evidence from a population-based proteomic study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal inflammation during pregnancy has been linked to offspring physical and neurodevelopmental health. This association has been hypothesized to operate through fetal immune responses. Yet, population-based evidence exploring the relationship between maternal and neonatal inflammation remains limited. This study investigates the associations of maternal inflammatory markers measured in the third trimester and at birth with neonatal inflammatory profiles at birth. METHODS: Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-17a (pg/mL), and CRP (mg/L) levels were measured in maternal plasma at birt

Association of maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus with overweight/obesity and fatty liver risk in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity and fatty liver are associated with adverse outcomes such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. It is very important to identify relevant risk factors and intervene as early as possible. At present, the relationship between maternal and offspring metabolic factors is conflicting. AIM: To estimate the association of maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with overweight/obesity and fatty liver risk in offspring at 8 years of age. METHODS: The prospective study included mothers who all had a 75-g oral glucose

Increased usage of special educational services by children born to mothers with systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid antibodies.

INTRODUCTION: Surveys of long-term health and developmental outcomes of children born to mothers with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have suggested an increase in learning disabilities among these children. We performed this observational study to investigate the relationship between maternal autoantibodies and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) in maternal lupus patients and neurocognitive development among their offspring. METHODS: SLE mothers with at least one live birth postlupus diagnosis were enrolled. Data on maternal medical/obstetric history and children's perinatal/medical

Association between parental ADHD and adverse offspring outcomes: Evidence from a nationwide Swedish register-based study.

The potential associations between parental ADHD and a broad spectrum of offspring health outcomes remain uncertain. We explored associations between parental ADHD and multiple adverse outcomes in offspring. We used linked Swedish national registers to identify all individuals born in Sweden between 2000 and 2014 (N = 1,164,580) and followed them from birth until emigration, death, or December 31, 2020. After matching, 56,853 individuals with parental ADHD and 544,716 individuals without parental ADHD were included in the analysis. Parental ADHD was identified through ADHD diagnoses or ADHD me

Association of maternal polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes with preterm birth and offspring birth size: a population-based cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the presence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) associated with more adverse infant outcomes in mothers with different types of diabetes? SUMMARY ANSWER: The presence of PCOS implies higher risks of total (medically indicated and spontaneously combined) and spontaneous preterm birth in mothers with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and lower risk of offspring being large for gestational age (LGA) in mothers with insulin-treated diabetes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: PCOS is suggested to be an independent risk factor for adverse infant
