Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the human central nervous system. NO, ion channel, cytokine and testosterone play an important role in MS, and may be associated with the pathogenesis of ED. Meanwhile, the relationship between MS-induced peripheral nerve injury and ED should be understood correctly. Further researches on these mediators can provide some theoretical evidence for the clinical treatment of ED.

The most common form of MS is relapsing remitting MS (RRMS). This is now a treatable condition and early diagnosis is becoming increasingly important in order to guide management decisions. After several years, RRMS may evolve into a slowly progressive deterioration in neurological function, known as secondary progressive MS. In 10-15% of people with MS, the condition follows this pattern of slow deterioration from onset, without relapses or remissions. This is primary progressive MS. It is difficult to predict prognosis in an individual patient. Factors associated with a favourable prognosis

BACKGROUND: Gait apraxia is a gait disorder not attributable to motor, cerebellar, or sensory dysfunction. Gait impairment is common in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but is mostly attributed to spasticity and ataxia. Impairment ratings scales are designed accordingly and do not separately evaluate apraxia.
OBJECTIVE: To describe 15 patients with gait apraxia resulting from MS as their major functional impairment.
METHODS: The Mayo Clinic database (1994-2007) was searched for the terms MS and gait apraxia.
INCLUSION CRITERIA: Definite MS, significant gait apraxia.
EXCLUSION CRITERIA: alternative…

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that commonly affects young adults who may be sexually active. Sexual dysfunction is a significant, but often underestimated, symptom of multiple sclerosis, affecting 50-90% of men and 40-80% of women. The types of sexual dysfunction can be categorized in terms of the normal sexual response cycle: sexual interest/desire dysfunction (reduced libido), sexual arousal dysfunction (including erectile dysfunction) and ejaculatory and orgasmic dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction may not only be due to lesions affecting the neural pathways involved in physiological …

Clinical course, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and cerebrospinal fluid data (CSF) on 20 patients among 520 with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS) according to the criteria of Poser et al., with opticospinal clinical presentation above 5 years and mean disease duration of 8+/-4.4 years were reviewed. The prevalence rate was 3.8%. The clinical course was relapsing-remitting (RR) for all patients. The mean age of onset was 24+/-8.2 years. The gender ratio was 2.3:1 female:male. First clinical presentation was spinal signs in 12 (60%), optic neuritis in 7 (35%) and simultaneo…

The primary pathogenetic mechanism responsible for the distinctive demyelinating lesions in the Central Nervous System (CNS) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), first described in remarkable detail by Charcot more than 170 years ago, remains one of the most baffling conundrums in medicine. A possible role for bacterial cell molecules and transportable proteins in the pathogenesis of MS is reviewed. The ability of bacterial toxins to distort immunity and to cause distinctive toxic damage in the nervous system is discussed in the light of largely forgotten data linking bacterial nasopharyngeal infection…

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus has been associated with increased risk of multiple sclerosis. However, little is known about the characteristics of this association.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the significance of sex, age at and time since infectious mononucleosis, and attained age to the risk of developing multiple sclerosis after infectious mononucleosis.
DESIGN: Cohort study using persons tested serologically for infectious mononucleosis at Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Civil Registration System, the Danish National Hospital Discharge Register, and th…

There are a number of illnesses that can mimic multiple sclerosis (MS). This pretty much includes any pathological process that can reflect injury to the central nervous system either in a transient or progressive basis. Typically, MS presents itself in individuals in their teens up to their late 30s. On occasion, however, one can see MS present in patients in their 60s. However, in retrospect, many of these patients might have had subtle manifestations of MS in their younger years. Visual obscuration or visual loss can be a manifestation of retinal ischemia, retinal migraine, or optic neuriti…

PURPOSE: To describe the pertinent neuro-ophthalmic disorders seen in multiple sclerosis (MS).
METHODS: Literature pertinent to the discussion of both the afferent and efferent neuro-ophthalmic disorders seen in MS are reviewed. This review is supplemented with illustrative case reports to demonstrate the hallmark issues in regards to demyelinating disease and its effect on the visual system.
RESULTS: Numerous disorders of vision can be caused by the central nervous system lesions of MS, but the main findings are optic nerve dysfunction in the afferent visual system and internuclear ophthalm…

Sleep disorders are pervasive in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) although clinically underrecognized by most physicians. The most common sleep disorders seen in patients with MS include insomnia, nocturnal movement disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, narcolepsy, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. Factors that influence the quality of sleep in this patient population include pain, nocturia, depression, medication effect, location of lesions, and disease severity. Disrupted sleep has the potential to cause daytime somnolence, increased fatigue, and nonrefreshing sleep, and …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the nervous system that is commonly manifested by visual system involvement and that may initially present with ophthalmologic symptoms. This paper reviews recent findings regarding the ocular manifestations in multiple sclerosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Manifestations of multiple sclerosis in the eye include both the afferent and efferent visual pathways. Optic neuritis, the most common ocular manifestation of multiple sclerosis, may be the initial clinical disease manifestation. Recent long-term follow-up data show th…

Multiple sclerosis is a complex neurological condition affecting sensory and motor nerve transmission. Its progression and symptoms are unpredictable and vary from person to person as well as over time. Common early symptoms include visual disturbances, facial pain or trigeminal neuralgia and paraesthesia or numbness of feet, legs, hands and arms. These, plus symptoms of spasticity, spasms, tremor, fatigue, depression and progressive disability, impact on the individual's ability to maintain oral health, cope with dental treatment and access dental services. Also, many of the medications used …
